England may well have got the better of the batting conditions. There is beautiful sunlight over Lord's.

The ball does not seem to be nipping around as much as when England were bowling.

  2. Eng 34-1published at 6 overs

Ben Duckett gets his first four off his 14th delivery, sending the final ball of Lungi Ngidi's over square.

The opener was dismissed for five on Tuesday, he moves to eight today.

Nandre Burger does everything that you want him to do. He bowls in the high eighties, he swings the ball in.

He is also very competitive, you can see by the way he celebrates. He has that fire in his belly.

  4. Eng 28-1published at 5 overs

The yellow stripe on the back of the knees on South Africa's kit is rather odd.

It looks like Nandre Burger could reach down, unzip and charge in wearing a sort-of board short.

Anyway, one Ben Duckett single off his third over.

It still feels odd calling Joe Root an England veteran, given he continues to look somewhat boy-ish.

Anyway, here's the wicket that brought him to the crease.

The final ball from Lungi Ngidi was right in the slot. It was a sweet half-volley for Joe Root to lean into.

    That's more like it.

Three fours for Joe Root off Lungi Ngidi's second outing, starting with a shot through point off its second ball.

He then closes the over with back-to-back boundaries, first chasing a wide delivery and sending an edge through fourth slip, then driving through the covers.

The England veteran moves to 16 from 16 balls.

No flexibility! England lose a wicket in the powerplay, so should then promote Will Jacks - it is what he does for a living!

That felt like a tactical review. It was worth the risk for the reward they would have got.

It didn't pay off but you can understand the thinking behind it.

    Eng 15-1

No sign of an edge - it remains a wide, as originally called.

Burger repeats his last delivery and Duckett sends it away for two through fine leg.

This could make a huge impact if it is out.

    Another one?

In fairness, the umpire doesn't think Ben Duckett has got anything on Nandre Burger's last delivery, chasing the ball behind his legs.

South Africa want to take a look though.

This is early for Joe Root to be in. He is used to coming in when the shine is off the new ball and then he can settle.

He is adaptable however but perhaps is not the player to make the most of the powerplay.

Andrew Bevan: South Africa take a wicket with the first ball of the innings and as Smith walks off, the subs are on with towels and drinks! Surely Burger's run-up isn't that exhausting?

  16. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

Lungi Ngidi takes the ball at the Nursery End and Joe Root pulls him away for four through mid-wicket for the first boundary of the England innings.

The subdued Lord's crowd stir into life, the habitual calls of "Roooot" echo out as the ball reaches the boundary.

England have approached this series as if to say we don't want to play, it's September. Abject. Quiet all day, muted crowd and bowlers being destroyed. The new era!

Nandre Burger has started well. They are so valuable the left-armers, they can get the ball moving through the gate.

Joe Root has got to come in and build some stability. These two have got to be strategic about which bowlers they target.

  19. Eng 1-1published at 1 over

Joe Root arrives early - he might not have been able to finish his Lord's tea.

A couple of attempted pull shots from the England number three, neither of which make contact.

That is a brilliant wicket from Nandre Burger. It was full and swinging.

South Africa have started with an absolute cracker.
