Tensions rise as fourth Test ends in controversial draw

  1. Ind 290-4published at 109 0vers

    Trail by 21 runs

Brydon Carse is through another over which, in truth, does not really threaten much - albeit India are unable to score any runs of it.

You sense that if neither Ben Stokes nor Jofra Archer can winkle a wicket or two in the next half hour before tea this match may well peter out into a draw.

I don't think enough is said about Ravindra Jadeja's batting ability. As an England fan, he is so infuriating to watch as he's just so, so good. Reminds me of Steve Smith!

Ben Stokes has followed through there in a way that suggests that hurt.

Ravindra Jadeja does have an issue with the short ball and you've seen that right through this series.

  5. Ind 290-4published at 108 overs

Ben Stokes decides to use the short-ball approach. Slightly curious given he has been more effective from the other end with the variable bounce just slightly back of a length.

He's warned by umpire Raza for a second bouncer to Ravindra Jadeja before adding a few more feet to his lengths.

The England captain is grimacing a little between deliveries.

This England team seems to struggle against the same batsmen again and again - Rahul, Gill, Pant, Jadeja - do they not have plans worked out to disrupt these players? This isn’t something new either.

  7. Ind 287-4published at 107 overs

Brydon Carse gets one to skid through low to Washington Stokes which dribbles through to wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.

Meanwhile, Ben Stokes has decided to take over from Joe Root at the Brian Statham End rather than replace Carse.

Huge credit to India, but it is very disheartening that what should have been a series-winning victory lap is sliding towards a draw because the only threatening bowler is our half-injured batting all rounder.

Ben Stokes is still loosening up but Brydon Carse continues for now. Washngton Sundar gets one into his arm pit which he fends off behind square.

England need some inspiration on the field and maybe in the crowd too. It’s quiet. Time for one of those five-minute long chants?

India now just 26 runs away from taking the lead and it is quite a significant moment when they start adding on to the lead with the time factored in.

Jadeja sends Root full toss to deep mid-wicket boundary for four

Joe Root wheels away round the wicket to Ravindra Jadeja. His fourth delivery is a freebie of a full toss which Jadeja flicks with strong wrists through mid-wicket.

Ben Stokes ponders things as he strokes his beard. Perhaps he's not going to bowl the next over after all.

The release that Ben Stokes has when bowling and the backspin he generates, that sort of exaggerates the deviations and the variable bounces he gets off the pitch. It is also a psychological thing, isn't it, when somebody like Stokes has looked so dangerous this series.

It looks like Stokes or bust, doesn't it? It is extraordinary that the other seamers haven't got any purchase from this pitch.

  15. Ind 279-4published at 105 overs

Brydon Carse is targeting a patch back of a length hoping to find that bit of variable bounce but Washington Sundar has studiously handled anything which is under his nose so far.

The England fans in the Old Trafford crowd start to pipe up which seems to prompt a bit more extra effort from the sinews of Carse who bangs in a bouncer which forces the India batter to sway out of the way.

    Ben Stokes is loosening up...

It's all about getting over the line, isn't it? It is about having the will to get over the line, you can be favourites or underdogs. If you count all the sessions, India have been ahead. Could have won at Lord's, they were in contention at Edgbaston. This partnership is growing steadily and ticking along, getting the ones and twos and showing real intent.

  17. drinks break

India 278-4 at drinkspublished at 104 overs

Joe Root concedes four runs off his eighth over but India look relatively untroubled.

An hour after lunch and the players take drinks.

A session and a half for England to take six wickets and knock off whatever lead India are able to establish.

Draw written all over this Test Match. Not such a bad thing as England will have learned loads, not least of which is this bowling attack isn't good enough for the Ashes and Liam Dawson can contain a batting side in a way Shoaib Bashir cannot.

  19. Ind 274-4published at 103 overs

Brendon McCullum has hit feet up on the balcony in front of the England dressing room as Brydon Carse toils away.

Final ball of the over and Carse pleads for an lbw after striking Ravindra Jadeja high on the pad...but it's a no-ball so academic anyway.

India have shown tremendous battling qualities here.

The pace bowlers have drawn just 7% false shots after lunch, the lowest they have drawn during any session of the Test so far.
