  1. NZ 164-3published at 33 overs

A touch of the nervous nineties?

Will Young top edges a sweep to Abrar Ahmed's delivery, sending the spinner's ball over the head of the keeper.

Haris Rauf gives chase and just about cuts off the boundary - Young takes three to move to 99.

A Latham single immediately brings Young back on strike, but he can't make his hundred, failing to score off the final three balls of the over.

N.B. Thanks to those of you who pointed out this is, in fact, Middlesex's Michael J Smith.

It's good to see the crowd come in.

Pakistan are playing their first ICC game at home for the first time in 29 years.

  4. NZ 159-3published at 32 overs

Will Young entered the 90s in the over before drinks and he makes further steps towards his century here.

The New Zealand opener chops his bat down on the final delivery from the returning Haris Rauf, sending the ball into the ground and off to the deep third boundary, moving to 96.

Both batters have started playing sweep shots. Will Young is starting to accelerate again. Tom Latham has helped build that partnership with him.

I'm pretty sure Paul Smith who played in Warwickshire's great team from the mid-90s wore specs when he batted. Good player!

    James in Stafford

Paul Smith did wear glasses while batting. We couldn't find any of him in action. But he here's a rather grainy image of Warwickshire's Neil Smith batting with another bespectacled cricketer in Asif Din at the 1989 NatWest Trophy final against Middlesex.

  7. drinks break

    NZ 151-3published at 31 overs

Spin at both ends as Abrar Ahmed replaces Naseem Shah.

It's a decent return to the attack, with the over going for just three singles, although the second, another Latham sweep, brings up New Zealand's 150.

    The players will take drinks.

  8. NZ 148-3published at 30 overs

    Swept, swept, swept away!

Tom Latham twice gets down well to fire Khushdil Shah to the square leg boundary.

This partnership is now worth 75.

You feel it's been a quiet passage of play, but these two are set now.

They're playing seam and spin pretty comfortably with the run-rate creeping up to five.

  10. NZ 129-3published at 29 overs

    Nice little shot, that.

Will Young opens the face of the bat to Naseem Shah's delivery, playing a compact drive over mid-off, with the ball running away to the boundary.

The opener gives himself a scare three balls later, taking off a quick single to mid-on, where Babar Azam gathers well and hits the non-striker's wicket with a direct hit.

The crowd in Karachi are very keen, but replays show Young made the crease relatively comfortably.

    He moves to 88.

New Zealand feel like they've been here a month, by all accounts.

They're probably not too nervous about the position they're in. They can use that last 20 overs as a T20 format.

  13. NZ 129-3published at 28 overs

Khushdil Shah back into the attack as Pakistan keep the spin going at this end.

Five singles from the over, Khushdil has gone for 0-17 from his four thus far.

Mohammed Rizwan takes his cap off and scratches his head.

The loose delivery from Naseem Shah was well-timed from Will Young. It was a bit of a freebie, to be honest.

  15. NZ 124-3published at 27 overs

Naseem Shah returns to replace Shaheen, and he holds Tom Latham to three dot balls before the New Zealand Test captain turns one down to the third boundary.

Will Young then clips the final ball of the over off his hips for four at square leg - that takes the opener to 80.

If this partnership stays together for another 10 overs New Zealand can get above 300. If Pakistan can break it you would think 250 is on for them.

  17. NZ 119-3published at 26 overs

Thanks Tim - they're also my only pair, and rather old.

My mother keeps telling me to go to the opticians and get a new pair, and I reply that I am deep into my thirties and don't need to be nagged on this.

She then taps me on the shoulder and points out I'm talking to a pot plant.

Meanwhile, New Zealand's batters work Salman Agha's third over for six runs, knocking the ball out to the boundary sweepers.

If we were compiling a list of bespectacled park runners doubtless Mike Peter would be top of the list. He's got some snazzy specs on and is ready to guide you through the second half of New Zealand's innings.

Left-arm quick Shaheen Afridi continues with his whippy tape-ball style action.

A tight-ish over during this gruelling middle period with just three runs conceded.

    Finely poised this one.
