Sink or swim. Every game holds a meaning.

You cannot lose. It's as simple as that and beating India is going to be very tough.

More spin, in the form of Khushdil Shah. He fizzes a couple of big turners which beat the outside edge of Daryl Mitchell's bat.

Time for the parched players to quench their thirst.

They need a wicket response from Haris Rauf as that can disrupt the flow.

Initially, I got the impression it would be a 300-plus score, but if you get 260-270 you should be in good shape.

    There's a run rate of 4.73.

Haris Rauf walks back to his mark with the expression of a man attempting to work complex physics equations out in his head.

He's much more tighter in this over, conceding just three runs off the bat.

Daryl Mitchell and Will Young can see the threat posed by Abrar Ahmed, and continue to play it safe by farming the strike. Four singles off the over.

A little sad to see Abrar has ditched the glasses from earlier in his career.

The international bespectacled cricketers' club has lost another member.

  9. NZ 64-2published at 13 overs

Haris Rauf manages to find a bit more control in the remainder of the over. Will Young and Daryl Mitchell content to work it around.

    A nothing delivery.

That's a gimme to a player of Will Young's calibre. The fielders didn't move in anticipation - they knew it was flying out for six.

More than hit of top edge off Young's bat but it flies over the boundary for New Zealand's first maximum regardless.

Abrar Ahmed is a box of tricks.

Will Young is drawn into poking one back to the Pakistan spinner, but it falls short of Abrar which draws a rueful smile.

A loose delivery from Abrar is edged between Young's legs and behind square for four.

Here's how Abrar got the wicket of Devon Conway a little earlier.

Naseem Shah decides it's time for some chin music to Daryl Mitchell.

The Kiwi batter takes on the first delivery with the hook shot - prompting a bit of an appeal - but it's a fresh-air shot. Naseem wistfully runs his hands through his lusciously coiffured barnet.

Next ball Mitchell ducks out the way of Naseem's bumper.

  15. NZ 48-2published at 10 overs

Daryl Mitchell is the new batter.

He's a tall, imposing, figure at the crease but so early in his innings does not use his considerable reach to take on Abrar Ahmed just yet.

Mitchell and Will Young content to work the mystery spin of Abrar into the gaps for the time being.

There's a bit of variable bounce, but it was always going to be flat - high-scoring games are so good to watch.

In the opening game you want loads of runs to be scored.

  17. NZ 45-2published at 9 overs

Huge wicket for Pakistan to snare Kane Williamson so early in the match.

Will Young rather lazily hangs his bat, away from his body, after playing at one he really did not need to play at outside his off stump

However, Young manages to flick a full one off his pads for four to finish the over with with a boundary.

You have to question how much of a distraction it was for Kane Williamson having someone move around.

There was a two-minute delay getting someone to move out of the way.

The next ball is a beauty from Naseem Shah and it nips back in. Williamson prodding outside off stump and it gets the faintest of touches.

Pakistan will believe they can win this game.

    Nicks off!

Naseem Shah squares up Kane Williamson with a testing delivery on a fourth-stump line. The former New Zealand batter waggles his willow and feathers an edge.

Mohammad Rizwan takes a pretty decent tumbling catch behind the stumps.

Williamson's bat not quite straight, but it's a fine piecing of bowling from Naseem who finds a bit of nip of the pitch.
