    Newcastle v Liverpool (19:30 GMT)

    Robbie Fowler
Former Liverpool striker on Amazon Prime

On the Mo Salah contract situation: "Give him what he wants. I think that is the simple answer. When you look at his goals and his performances for Liverpool it has warranted the contract he wants.

"He is a fantastic player, a game player who can win and change games in a second."

  2. 'We still have a lot of things to improve'published at 19:14 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

Arsenal v Manchester United (20:15 GMT)

    Manchester United

Man Utd captain Bruno Fernandes, speaking to Amazon Prime: "When a manager comes in the belief is always there. We still have a lot of things to improve and it is a big test for us today."

On being captain: "Responsibility is always there when you play for Man Utd. The attention is always at the club, but I am aware of that.

"I try my best to help everyone who is involved with the club and I am going to do it again with the new manager."

On never winning at the Emirates: "I don't know that stat. I don't remember losing many game."

Confidence and self-belief is now running through the very core of the team, whatever the starting line-up.

Slot has managed the squad impressively. Curtis Jones, in the form of his life, was surprisingly left out of the side for the City game. Yet his replacement, Dominik Szoboszlai, gave his best performance of the season so far.

The injuries to Ibrahima Konate and Conor Bradley could hardly have come at a worse time, but the depth and quality in the squad means they look capable of coping - or at least so far.

Newcastle at St James' Park represents another significant challenge, though.

Despite a mostly underwhelming opening third to the season so far, Eddie Howe's team do have the capacity to cause problems for even the most resolute of defences.

The stadium can be a ferocious and formidable venue, particularly for night matches. It also promises to give us another insight into just how well equipped Liverpool are to becoming a very real deal.

    Newcastle v Liverpool (19:30 GMT)

Newcastle have lost their past six Premier League games against Liverpool, and are without a win in 15 against the Reds since a 2-0 win in December 2015 (drawn four, lost 11).

Liverpool have won 11 Premier League games in which they have trailed against the Magpies - the most comeback wins one side has against another in the competition's history.

  5. Ortega the new number one?published at 19:12 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

Man City v Nottingham Forest (19:30 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at the Etihad Stadium

It is the first time since May 2023 when Manchester City were pushing on for the Treble that Stefan Ortega has started successive Premier League games when Ederson has been fit.

City boss Pep Guardiola said yesterday the Brazilian remained his number one but as the search goes on for a winning formula, if the hosts are successful tonight, I wonder if there is a chance the German might keep his spot.

  6. Goals win games...published at 19:12 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

    Everton v Wolves (19:30 GMT)

    Shamoon Hafez
BBC Sport football news reporter at Goodison Park

Everton have taken 69 shots in their last four games but haven't managed to find the net.

IF they fail to get a goal again here tonight, when will the next goal come?!

They've got Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in their next four games, rounding the month off against high-flying Nottingham Forest.

The way it's going, they could go the rest of the year without scoring!

  7. 'You can judge the table best after 19 games'published at 19:12 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

    Newcastle v Liverpool (19:30 GMT)

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot, speaking to Amazon Prime: "[Resting] Trent has a lot to do with us being aware of the fact we only have five defenders left in a month where we play a lot of games. After an intense game against Manchester City it wouldn't be smart to play him so soon.

"The good thing for us is every time we have won a game it hasn't been by a big margin, we have had to work for it and so the players know that if we are even one step down you get punished.

"Arsenal lost here, Manchester City had a draw. I think you can judge the table in the best possible way after 19 games. We are still having some tough games to go before we arrive at 19 games. Let's wait and see."

  8. 'Newcastle will be tricky for Liverpool'published at 19:11 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

Liverpool against Newcastle is a tricky fixture. Eddie Howe's side beat Arsenal very, very recently.

There will definitely be bumps on the road for Arne Slot's side, and I do wonder about the Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk contract situations.

I think this run will make the Liverpool hierarchy think that we are so far ahead and we do not want to mess it up now. It will accelerate getting those deals over the line.

  9. 'Villa overachieved and now they're underachieving'published at 19:11 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

Aston Villa v Brentford (20:15 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on the Monday Night Club

On the Champions League hindering Aston Villa’s form…

If you go back to last season Aston Villa had played 21 games at this stage and this season they have played 20 games - it is difficult to measure.

I think they overachieved by some distance with quite a thin squad. If you look at the players this season, it is predominantly the players who played last season.

Douglas Luiz had a good season, but was he such a big loss?

They lost Moussa Diaby, he was an important player.

I think it's one of those where they overachieved and now they are underachieving.

They are on a poor run of games, but with the manager and the players they've got they will turn this around.

  10. 'You can't back against the leaders'published at 19:10 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

    Newcastle v Liverpool (19:30 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
    Former Premier League striker

Newcastle have looked a little flat recently, and have been lacking a cutting edge.

This is still a tough game for Liverpool, though, off the back of such a big week for them with wins over Real Madrid and Manchester City.

The Magpies have already beaten Arsenal at St James' Park this season and they are certainly capable of getting something against Liverpool too, but you just cannot back against the leaders at the moment.

Arne Slot has such great strength in depth right through his squad and they can win games in different ways. Even if they do drop points here, their bubble is not going to burst anytime soon.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2

  11. 'Dyche not to blame for Everton's situation'published at 19:09 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

    Everton v Wolves (19:30 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
    Former Premier League striker

Everton did well for half an hour or so against Manchester United but they just can't score - they have not found the net in any of their past four games.

In contrast, Wolves have definitely got a goal in them but their problem is that they are just so open defensively.

Gary O'Neil's side have conceded 32 goals in 13 league games, which makes me think even Everton will score against them.

This is a huge game at the bottom of the table and my first thought was to go for another draw, but I am actually going to go with the Toffees to nick the three points.

They certainly need them, with a tough run of games coming up, starting with the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

Everton manager Sean Dyche is under pressure at the moment and a section of fans appear to have really turned against him, but I don't think you can blame the club's situation on him.

Of course he carries the can for their results but he has been totally hamstrung over what he can spend on his squad, which is why they are struggling.

    Sutton's prediction: 2-1

Replying to Conor from Bristol, no. I feel it too. All this talk of the form they’re in, they haven’t won 5 Prem games in a row this season. They’re in a 4 game streak right now.

  14. 'Without our five most consistent players'published at 19:08 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

    Southampton v Chelsea (19:30 GMT)

Southampton are missing Taylor Harwood-Bellis, Flynn Downes and Tyler Dibling through suspension.

The trio were all booked in the 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Jan Bednarek, Aaron Ramsdale and Adam Lallana are injured.

"We are probably without our five most consistent players so we have to tweak and adapt," said Saints boss Russell Martin.

"Am I kicking myself for playing three of our best players and getting a point away at Brighton? Absolutely not."

Downes scored the goal against Albion, and Martin said: "His frustration of being suspended has overtaken his feeling for scoring. It was one of his best performances for us."

On Pep Guardiola reacting to the Liverpool fans...

I liked the way Pep Guardiola acted after the game because what was the alternative?

Man City got hammered by Liverpool. The alternative was to put your gesture to the fans and walk down the tunnel.

People would have looked at that and thought, "He's given up."

It showed Pep has a bit of fire in his belly.

  19. Team news - Martinez starts for Villapublished at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

Unai Emery makes two changes to the Aston Villa team that lost 3-0 at Chelsea on Sunday.

  20. Dark clouds at the Etihadpublished at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

Man City v Nottingham Forest (19:30 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at the Etihad Stadium

It's dark overhead but the umbrellas are out so it would be grey skies above the Etihad Stadium if it was daylight.

The weather is in keeping with Manchester City's recent results.

Some of the older fans I have spoken to are not too bothered, after all, they recall City being in the third tier of the English game.

For the younger ones, it is a bit of a shock.

Starting with the FA Cup in 2011, they have won eight Premier Leagues, three FA Cups, six EFL Cups, the Champions League, four Community Shields, the UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

    Winning is all they know.
