  1. 'City's biggest problem is individual errors'published at 19:01 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

Man City v Nottingham Forest (19:30 GMT)

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on Amazon Prime

For me the biggest problem for Man City at the moment is the individual errors. These mistakes are leading to goals which impact the flow of games and the confidence in the team. These errors are not things we tend to see from them and they are coming so regularly and has cost them so many goals.

A Nottingham Forest win today would take them above Manchester City in the table - and into the Champions League places.

They could even be level on points with second place if Chelsea and Arsenal lose tonight.

Forest have won three of their past four Premier League home games.

Nuno Espirito Santo's side have scored the opening goal in a league-high 11 matches this season.

They have kept five clean sheets this early into a top-flight season for the first time since 1987.

I see Arsenal struggling today under the pressure to keep up with Liverpool. I also see Liverpool losing and Man City winning so ultimately, the title race opens up again - 3 days after it was considered over. That's English football and the reason it's the best league in the world.

On Ruben Amorim's start at Manchester United...

We are excited because it's a promising start and it's a new beginning.

We need the points at this moment, but from what I see the players have got their enthusiasm back.

Last week we asked in this feature on Caoimhin Kelleher who should play when Alisson is fit... and 61% of readers said they'd stick with Kelleher.

    Caoimhin Kelleher has been extraordinary.

If you take him out when Alisson is back what is that going to do to Kelleher?

They should stick by Kelleher until he makes a mistake.

  7. In need of festive cheerpublished at 18:56 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

    Everton v Wolves (19:30 GMT)

The Christmas lights are shining brightly outside Goodison Park and houses close to the stadium have been decorated, while some brave person has stuck a huge red Santa facing the main stand of the home of the Blues.

Everton come up against city rivals Liverpool here on Saturday, but they've got a basement battle against Wolves to negotiate tonight.

The Toffees are desperately in need of some festive cheer having not scored in their last four league games and lying only one place and two points above their opponents.

Both Sean Dyche and Gary O'Neil are under huge pressure so the full-time result may go a long way to deciding their fate at the respective clubs.

Southampton have only picked up five points from their opening 13 games.

No team have ever stayed up from that position in the Premier League - with eight teams going down in that situation.

The last side to survive in the top flight after such a poor start was Sheffield United in 1990-91.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola says his side "need" the fans' support tonight.

"The situation is what it is but they have always been there and they don't hide their feelings," he said.

"They know what this team has done in the last decade, but they also know we absolutely need the support. The players are human beings.

"And we are, as always, willing to give everything to change the dynamic.

"We don't feel sorry for ourselves. It is what it is and we have to accept it."

    Pat Nevin

When Jurgen Klopp left you thought Liverpool would have a transition. Nonsense, they have been brilliant.

There is this aura when teams go on this run and they look unbeatable.

  12. 'A purists' game of football'published at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

    Southampton v Chelsea (19:30 GMT)

    Chris Sutton
    Former Premier League striker

Southampton boss Russell Martin was tearing his hair out about their disallowed goal against Brighton on Friday. His side still picked up a really good, battling, point but they really needed all three.

This is going to be a purists' game of football, because both teams play an attractive style, but I can't see past a Chelsea win here.

It won't be a stroll for Enzo Maresca's side but they have so much quality in their team and they look so dangerous at the moment - up front, Nicolas Jackson is on fire.

Jackson's improvement this campaign compared to last is making me think maybe I should have had a second season at Stamford Bridge. There are a lot of Chelsea fans who tell me that... but most of them are unhappy I even had one season there.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-2

As welcome as it is for everyone at a football club, playing better than your potential - or as it is most popularly know as "punching above your weight" - is not all good news.

Ask Unai Emery at Aston Villa.

A hugely impressive fourth place in last season's Premier League and with it a slot in the Champions League set the benchmark very high.

It was always going to be an enormous task for Aston Villa to maintain the stellar performance of the last campaign although any talk of a crisis at the club is way off the mark.

When you are in this kind of form you need to get that win as soon as possible. We thought last week against Feyenoord would be the moment but it wasn't. The Man City players will be desperate for that win tonight, just to get this run of a lack of wins off their back.

The consistency of individual mistakes is alarming and suggests deeper issues related to coaching and morale.

Maybe O’Neil overthinks and complicates his tactics, creating confusion and uncertainty on the pitch. Footballers thrive on clarity and confidence. Instead of playing instinctively and fluidly, players become overly cautious, afraid of making mistakes within a system they don’t fully trust or understand.

Signs of discord are mounting. A heated exchange between Jose Sa and a couple of fans in the South Bank reflects the frustration bubbling over, while players bypassing O’Neil’s handshake as they head down the tunnel demonstrates growing tensions.

Wolves desperately need an identity, a defined system of play that suits the squad’s strengths, and a consistent approach that restores defensive stability. Without this, their Premier League future remains in serious jeopardy.

The spotlight is firmly fixed on O’Neil and the board.

    Gael Clichy
Former Manchester City and Arsenal defender on Amazon Prime

Having Kevin de Bruyne back is a different story for Man City. He is the player that they have been missing, they need a player that can find those final balls and play in different positions, half spaces or wide. Overall it is great news for the team.

Liverpool play ever so well. There's confidence, all the players are comfortable with each other and the manager.

Trent not playing is a little bit of a surprise, he hasn't played many games this year, but the players who have come in have all done well.

  19. 'Rebuild of monumental proportions needed'published at 18:44 Greenwich Mean Time 4 December 2024

Manchester City v Nottingham Forest (19:30 GMT)

    Pat Nevin
Former Chelsea and Scotland winger in his Football Extra Newsletter

It is worth considering just how momentous a period this will turn out to be in years to come.

Pep Guardiola's dominance is done - well, it is for the time being. Manchester City will not melt away to obscurity any time soon, but the run of clearly being the best of the best in Britain is over.

There is a rebuild of monumental proportions needed - and they know it.

How quickly can this be done? Inside two years is the answer as Chelsea have shown with their recent merciless clearout and restructuring plan.

It is handy then that Pep has signed a two-year deal.

In the meantime they will endeavour to stay competitive but that is very different to being dominant.

The time to start changing is right now and even the coming January transfer window could be an eyeopener.

Waiting in football is not an option when you are on the slide.

Brentford have never won a game away to Aston Villa in 10 previous attempts dating back to 1936.

However a more positive way of looking at that is they have only lost once at Villa since 1946. Six of the previous seven meetings at Villa Park have been draws.
