One defeat, actually the first one of the season after seven games and everyone is up in arms! No team has won the premier league without losing games since...err Arsenal. There will still be many twists and turns!

  3. 'Nice to beat a title contender'published at 20:26 British Summer Time 19 October

    FT: Bournemouth 2-0 Arsenal

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth goalscorer Ryan Christie speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "Big win. One thing we are trying to change from last season is to take some points off the top teams. Arsenal are a great side and the red card probably changed the game quiet a lot but nice to beat a title contender.

"We need to take a lot of confidence from this. We were frustrated with the Leicester result before the break, knowing we had a tough run of games coming up but tonight shows we can go and take the game to these teams. We need to to into the Villa game next with the same mindset."

On the Saliba red card: "To be honest I've not seen it back. All I know is that Eva [Evanilson] is going through on goal and I hardly think that the defender has played the ball so for me I'll stick with the red card."

On his goal: "It was a move off the training ground. I'm not normally the one on the end of it to be fair, but credit to Shaun Cooper who us coming up with loads of different set pieces, he has new ones for us to try each game.

"To do it with all the subs that were coming on as well is brilliant. A great touch around the corner from Justin [Kluivert] and it was great to see it go into the back of the net."

Aims for the season: "We didn't set an exact target but we are hoping to improve as a club season in and season out. We were happy with last season but we know we can push further and one of the things that will take us there is to get points off the top six like we have done today."

  4. 'Arsenal can't keep dropping careless points'published at 20:24 British Summer Time 19 October

    FT: Bournemouth 2-0 Arsenal

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Let's be totally honest. We are talking about Arsenal trying to topple Manchester City and to do so you can't keep dropping careless points as they have done this season on a couple of occasions. They did it against Brighton at home and have done again tonight away at the Vitality Stadium.

  5. 'Webb would not dream of getting involved'published at 20:22 British Summer Time 19 October

    FT Bournemouth 2-0 Arsenal

    Jamie Redknapp
Former Tottenham midfielder on Sky Sports

On PGMOL chief Howard Webb being seen on his phone while referee Rob Jones checked the VAR screen before sending off William Saliba: Howard Webb is not trying to communicate with the officials from the stands. He's watching the game. Anyone who thinks that, to have the audacity, or ego, to think 'I am going to influence the game', we're talking nonsense now to even question that.

He is at the game and listening to the audio. But he can't turn round to the referee. We've got VAR and everyone there looking at it why would he even dream to get involved?

  6. 'It was good refereeing'published at 20:20 British Summer Time 19 October

    FT: Manchester United 2-1 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford manager Thomas Frank, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think a lot of things went right in the first half. It was a game of two halves. It was fairly even in the first half but I thought we were slightly on top. Then we go 1-0 up and go in at half-time with that result. We knew they'd come out strong. It's not good enough that we concede after two minutes in the second half. If they don't score there then we know always it becomes more difficult. That was the disappointing thing.

On United's response: "Of course I give them credit, there's always two teams on the pitch. I think we can do better, we have to play two good halves. If you want to win here you have to have two good halves. So the second half was disappointing. Credit to Manchester United, some of their players stepped up. I think Eriksen was running the show, definitely!

On Brentford's opener: "I don't know exactly where De Ligt should have been. It's a corner kick routine that we have worked on and it paid off. We don't know if it would have helped if he stayed on the pitch. It is what it is. I always think if you flip it - Manchester United would have wanted to take the corner at the other end if one of our player were off the pitch. He was bleeding so I think it was good refereeing.

On his side's display: "I think we did a lot of things right in the first half, which was very impressive. Second half was disappointing because I know what these players are capable of. That's the frustrating part."

Very disappointing but, as an Arsenal fan, I’m once again more embarrassed by some of our ridiculous supporters. Two wins and we’re heading for the title; one defeat and the season’s over. Get a grip!

  8. 'The over-rule for penalty is a very surprising one'published at 20:15 British Summer Time 19 October

    FT: Ipswich Town 0-2 Everton

Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, speaking to BBC Sport, said: "It ended up being a poor day for us. The first half was pretty even but at the moment the moments are going against us.

"It was an error from us for the first goal and the over-rule for penalty is a very surprising one considering everything I've been told about clear and obvious - that makes it 1-1 and shortly after we didn't defend a corner well enough in the second phase.

"We knew it would be a challenging season and the step up into the Premier League was always going to be a big challenge. In eight games we've got a result in four of them. We know where we need to improve and it's up to us to turn those margins in our favour. The last two games have got away from us.

"We need to look back on what we can do better. We've had a couple of VARs against us recently and I found that a strange one today."

On the penalty Ipswich were awarded, only for the video assistant referee to advise referee Michael Oliver to watch back, which he did and then changed his mind, McKenna added: "Jack [Clarke] rolls inside the box, he is around the penalty spot and about to shoot and Dwight McNeil lunges his leg across the line of the ball and Jack's swing of the ball when he is about to probably score.

"Of course he kicks Dwight McNeil, but I understand you can't lunge across the ball like that when someone is in their backswing. I'm sure Sean will see it differently but in terms of clear and obvious unless I'm wrong I can't see how that is clear and obvious. It's a really debatable decision but from everything I've heard is that they wouldn't go against that decision."

  9. 'An accident waiting to happen'published at 20:12 British Summer Time 19 October

    FT: Bournemouth 2-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arteta watches on from the sideline deep in thoughtImage source, Getty Images

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, speaking to Match of the Day, said: "It's very difficult to win in the Premier League with 10 men for 60-70 minutes, it's just an accident waiting to happen. We have had to go through it in three games and that cost us the game.

"We had the big chance and the moment in the game to score and have a different result and then we conceded a goal. We try to stick to the rules. The three [red cards] have been different ones and three very different outcomes.

"The team tried, the effort with 10 men was fantastic but today it was not enough to win the game. It took us a while to understand what we had do in the first 15 minutes to start with, then we grabbed the game but after 30 minutes the game changed."

  10. 'We had the patience'published at 20:10 British Summer Time 19 October

    FT Bournemouth 2-0 Arsenal

    Bournemouth

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to BBC Sport: "For us it was an important game after losing the last one against Leicester so we had to recover.

"Today we started very well. There was the red card and from then it was tricky as they are still a threat from set plays, free kicks. But we had the patience and ended the game well

"The advantage they have at set plays is they are taller than us so we had to find another way to make a difference. Today it worked and it was important.

"At the end they decided they are going to attack the same way, obviously conceded more space in behind and we had to take every chance. We benefit from a mistake and got the penalty, but even at 2-0 we had to finish the game".

Mike: There is a clear discipline issue with Arsenal, from the manager down to the players. They are great to watch and could be title challengers, but this is their achilles heel

Neil: Arsenal's ill-discipline stems from their manager. His behaviour is mirrored on the field. Their disciplinary record is no coincidence.

AP: Arsenal will not win a Premiership title under Arteta. They lose their heads and their inability to win these sorts of games (Villa last season, the run of 4 without a win in 22-23 etc) will cost them again this season.

  12. 'It was quite a mature win'published at 20:06 British Summer Time 19 October

    FT Bournemouth 2-0 Arsenal

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was quite a mature win because it is a tricky situation [playing against 10 men]. We started well for the first 30 minutes and then the red card changes the game. We had to control the game, attack but don't lose our minds as even with 10 men, set plays, free-kicks they can be a threat. Luckily for us we took the benefit of having one man more.

"Before half-time we missed a couple of chances and at the beginning of the second half we managed not to finish, so we had to have patience to take the benefit of having one more player without losing our heads.

"We were playing very well the first 30 minutes. It was a very level game, which is very good when you face this opposition. It became easier with 11v10 but everything is not done, you have to finish the job and we did it."

  13. 'We need to stop making mistakes'published at 20:04 British Summer Time 19 October

    FT: Bournemouth 2-0 Arsenal

    Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, speaking to Sky Sports, says: "We've kicked ourselves in the foot three times in eight games and we got away with it at home to Brighton and away at Manchester City. Bournemouth kept probing and made it 2-0.

"I'm proud of the players for fighting, even with 10 men, but the naivety, we need to stop making mistakes because you want 11 players for 90 minutes and that's what wins you football matches.

"With 10 men we showed a lot of character and personality to stay in the game. The big chance was Martinelli's and the keeper read it and made a great save and one minute later, normally a routine we are so strong at, has done us.

"We can't make silly mistakes. You need all your best players on the pitch at all times. The belief is so high and we will stick together. This is football, whatever happens the most important thing is that you stick together and stay in the right direction."

Lu: Lots jumping on the bandwagon tonight. But it is only Arteta and Arsenal, after Liverpool and Klopp that make the league anything other than City. Other clubs need to step up, or shut up.

I am slightly concerned for Arsenal. Do they have enough strength in depth in their squad? Without Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard they were lacking quality.

  20. 'Definitely denying a goalscoring opportunity'published at 19:50 British Summer Time 19 October

    FT: Bournemouth 2-0 Arsenal

    Jamie Redknapp
Former Tottenham midfielder on Sky Sports

There's absolutely no doubt if he had no put his arms on him, he [William Saliba] would have got there first. He is one of the quickest players, one of the quickest defenders. He would have at least had enough pace to get help.

Your natural inclination is to panic, grab him and he's thinking 'what have I done?' Then Gabriel went to the referee and there's a few guilty signs. It's definitely a foul. Ben White you could argue, can he get back in time, but my guess is no. It was definitely denying a goalscoring opportunity.
