  2. 'Boro needed that game and that result'published at 22:12 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Middlesbrough 2-0 WBA

    Neil Maddison
Former Middlesbrough midfielder on BBC Radio Tees

West Brom came out and played with a bit of a tempo in the second half, and you have to weather that storm and in previous games we haven't been able to do it.

In this game I thought the back four were really solid, and Tom Glover was really comfortable in goal plus the midfield lads all did their jobs.

The last goal was a great finish and it was nothing more than we deserved. They needed that game and they needed that result.

Players need to generate the atmosphere and then the fans will get right behind them .

    Championship table

It is midweek away trips like these that can be so defining in the Championship and tonight, Sheffield United and Sunderland have come up with big wins.

Sheffield United came from behind to beat 10-man Swansea 2-1 to go back above Leeds to the top of the table with a third straight win.

As for the Black Cats, Eliezer Mayenda's 28th minute goal was enough to collect three points from a hard-fought encounter at Derby as they jump above Burnley into third.

Middlesbrough's win over West Brom in Tony Mowbray's first game back in charge of the Baggies sees Boro leapfrog them and Blackburn to go fifth.

That's because Rovers lost 2-0 at home to Coventry, while Watford missed the chance to move back into the top six as they were on the wrong end of a home loss to Preston.

While keep an eye on QPR. Six points in two away games in three days has them in the heady heights of ninth after their success at Hull, only four points off sixth and on the charge.

  4. Trouble for Derby?published at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Luton missed the chance to get out of the bottom three as they lost 3-2 at Oxford who are now out of the bottom 10 and closer to the play-off places.

Hull City's home defeat by QPR means they could be in the relegation zone this time tomorrow night.

Another loss for Derby, this time to Sunderland, means they are in free fall with just one point keeping them out of the relegation zone.

Swansea drop into the frame but are eight points clear of trouble and Millwall are still looking over their shoulders as they threw away a 2-0 lead at home to Cardiff to draw 2-2. The Welshmen are only two points clear themselves.

Tonight's results will have given Portsmouth, Stoke and Plymouth plenty of encouragement for their games tomorrow night.

  5. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:58 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Millwall 2-2 Cardiff

Millwall were seconds away from picking up their first win since before Christmas.

But Yousef Salech had other ideas, popping up in the dying seconds to snatch a point Cardiff deserved, keeping the Lions right in the relegation mix.

Teenage Liverpool loanee Calum Scanlon lashed, and I do mean lashed, his first senior goal after just 61 seconds and Casper de Norre tucked home the second after some mesmerising work from another youngster Raees Bangura-Williams - and all was rosy in the Millwall garden after 19 minutes.

Chris Willock halved the deficit in first half stoppage-time with a lovely strike but the Bluebirds could not find a goal to show for their second-half dominance until the start of the 98th minute, denying Alex Neil his first win as Lions boss.

    Yousef Salech (90+8 MINS)

THEY HAVE DONE IT...Yousef Salech tucks home his first goal for the club...

He missed a sitter moments ago but Perry Ng makes a brave run into the box and manages to get the ball to the big forward who shows poise and power to spin and clip his shot past Lukas Jensen to send those travelling Bluebirds fans wild.

How big could that point be?

    Millwall 2-1 Cardiff

    Eerily quiet at The Den.

The home fans know what this win would mean. A seven-point cushion over the relegation zone.

Cardiff fans also know what it means. They are trying to inspire their team to snatch something in the final two minutes or so.

  8. League One and Two round-uppublished at 21:52 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

The pressure is mounting on Wigan boss Shaun Maloney as they were beaten 2-1 at home by struggling Burton despite taking the lead through Thelo Aasgaard.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson levelled for the Brewers before Rumarn Burrell won it in the second period to lift Gary Bowyer's side off the bottom of the table.

Bolton manager Ian Evatt also had a poor night as his side lost 2-1 at home to Charlton as Karoy Anderson struck a late winner for the Londoners.

Peterborough and Exeter finished 1-1 as Hector Kyprianou's opener for the home side was cancelled out by Millenic Alli in injury time.

In League Two Harrogate and Colchester played out a goalless draw while Fleetwood made it back-to-back wins under Pete Wild with a 2-1 victory over a fading MK Dons side.

  9. CLOSE!published at 21:49 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Millwall 2-1 Cardiff

SEVEN additional minutes. You can imagine how the home fans reacted to that news.

It should be 2-2 too. Anwar El Ghazi sends in an inviting cross from the left but Yousef Salech gets his header wrong and plants the ball over Lukas Jensen's bar when unmarked 10 yards out.

    What a let-off.

This is by no means done, however...

  10. 'Derby really started to ask questions'published at 21:48 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Derby 0-1 Sunderland

    Gary Bennett
Ex-Sunderland defender on BBC Radio Newcastle

It is an excellent three points. You have got to say Derby really started to ask questions in that second half and we had to really dig deep.

It was an excellent result and a clean sheet for Sunderland.

We know it is not going to be an easy game and no game is going to be easy till the end of the season, especially away from home - teams are going to keep increasing their level.

  11. 'Middlesbrough got the second goal and killed the game off'published at 21:47 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Middlesbrough 2-0 WBA

    Tony 'Bomber' Brown
West Brom's all-time leading goalscorer on BBC Radio WM

In the second half West Brom came out and gave it a go, and they had all the possession for long spells. But Albion couldn't get that all important equaliser that would of put them back in the game.

It is an issue for them at the moment - scoring goals, we talked about losing Josh Maja meaning they have no focal point, which you need desperately, to play off them and get high up the pitch.

Albion have had a go, but Middlesbrough have got that second goal and killed the game off.

  12. GREAT SAVE!published at 21:45 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Millwall 2-1 Cardiff

Lukas Jensen flies across his goal to push away a looping header from Yousef Salech.

It might have been drifting wide, but the keeper flings himself to his left to push it away from the post, and the lurking Cian Ashford too.

Nervy finish in store for Lions fans.

    All Cardiff at present.

  13. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:44 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Watford 1-2 Preston

Preston see out seven minutes of stoppage time to secure victory at Watford.

A goal in either half for Milutin Osmajić proves enough.

They were the dominant team, could easily been further ahead at the break but did get some breathing space in the second half.

Rocco Vata's belting strike gave the hosts some late hope but overall it's a very dispiriting night for Watford and a third straight home defeat.

  14. Postpublished at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    FT: Derby 0-1 Sunderland

The Black Cats head to the corner to take the applause of a magnificent midweek away following.

It's only a second away win since October and gets them right in the mix for chasing down the sides above them.

Derby lost two players to injury during the game but they never gave up although the table is not looking good.

  15. CLOSE!published at 21:43 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Millwall 2-1 Cardiff

Anwar El Ghazi is off the bench for Cardiff and wins a free-kick 20 yards out after a trademark gliding run in from the left.

He opts to take it himself and bends a powerful effort inches past Lukas Jensen's far post with the keeper at full stretch.

As close as the Bluebirds have come in the second period, despite having bossed much of the half.

  16. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:41 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Derby 0-1 Sunderland

Eliezer Mayenda's first-half strike is enough for a precious three points for Sunderland.

They have really had to work for that after some immense pressure from the hosts and a couple of fine Anthony Patterson saves.

Wilson Isidor's non second goal remains a mystery, but the Black Cats are up to third.

  17. Postpublished at 21:41 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Bolton 1-2 Charlton

Into four additional minutes at the end of this one as Ian Evatt's men try to salvage something, anything, in this League One clash.

  18. Postpublished at 21:40 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Derby 0-1 Sunderland

We are into the sixth minute of seven added on.

Derby are still pushing, but Sunderland holding firm.

  19. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:39 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Swansea 1-2 Sheff Utd

Sheffield United celebrateImage source, PA Media

Sheffield United are back on top of the Championship, but oh my did they have to work for it.

Florian Bianchini's first goal in 13 appearances put Swansea ahead after seven minutes, after Michael Cooper had somehow clawed Ben Cabango's point-blank header from Matt Grimes' free-kick into the air.

Swansea could have been further ahead before the break, but a half-time triple sub from Chris WIlder changed the game as Rhian Brewster swept home from close range two minutes after the turnaround, moments before Swansea defender Harry Darling saw red for an ugly challenge on Tyrese Campbell.

Harrison Burrows completed the turnaround from the penalty spot after Campbell had been fouled by Josh Key and though the visitors spurned chances to put the game to bed, they held on to overhaul Leeds at the summit.

  20. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:39 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

    Blackburn 0-2 Coventry

Two quick goals either side of half time give Coventry victory at Ewood Park.

It was a very soft opening goal as Ellis Simms headed in at the far post.

Brandon Thomas-Asante then turned in a second three minutes into the second half and that proved enough for Frank Lampard's side.

Blackburn created two early chances but their night quickly got away from them and their slippery form continues.
