Callum O'Hare's overhead kick into the Sunderland six-yard box is sliced by Chris Mepham, though thankfully for him past the post rather than inside it.

Another slip from Sydie Peck allows Jobe Bellingham to slide out to Adil Aouchiche who whips a dangerous cross in from the left of the area which the stretching Wilson Isidor is inches away from touching in at the far post.

Isidor might just have done himself a mischief as he stretched to meet it too. He looks in some discomfort, though he'll be ok to continue...

Great news with both strikers scoring for Sunderland. Need to keep pushing for more goals and avoiding the temptation to sit back and concede late goals. We have lost six points already from goals conceded after the 89th minute this season already.

    Duncan, Madrid, via WhatsApp

The first bit of January transfer business Sunderland need to do is make Mepham and Isidor's loans into permanent moves, they both show the quality that is needed for a promotion push.

  7. 'Need to learn to get at least a point'published at 21:00 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

    FT: Hull City 0-1 Middlesbrough

    Hull City

Hull City boss Ruben Selles told BBC Radio Humberside:

“That (goal) being in the last seconds is hard to take. It hurts because if you cannot win it - and sometimes it happens like that - then you don’t lose it at the very end.

“It was a game that didn’t look like it was going to be for us, but we need to learn to at least get that point at the very end.

“Middlesbrough are a good team, they are powerful and the players on the pitch were doing a good job and then the substitutions made them better.

“We needed to put in a lot of effort and we probably need to know how to navigate those moments.

“The goal that late, with the amount of effort everyone put in, it’s a little bit of heartbreak.”

  8. 'We have to use this as springboard'published at 20:58 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

    FT: Hull City 0-1 Middlesbrough

    Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick told BBC Radio Tees:

“Those (late goals) are the ones where you get that instant emotion that pours out of you in those situations - it’s why we love the game.

“The players have been giving everything, we kept going until the end, and it was a fantastic day for us. We need to use it as a bit of a springboard.

“You can see how much it means to the boys, how we’re together. The spirit gets us through in the end.

“I thought we deserved it. In the end it came and we can enjoy that one, that’s for certain.

“I honestly didn’t give up. It was a fantastic way to finish the game.”

Time to breathe and get a bit of reaction from the earlier evening game in which Middlesbrough grabbed a last-gasp winner at Hull to climb to fifth and leave the Tigers still in the bottom three...

  10. 'Sunderland's strikers keep exploiting the two centre-backs'published at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

    HT: Sunderland 2-1 Sheff Utd

    Gary Bennett
Ex-Sunderland defender on BBC Radio Newcastle

If the Sunderland strikers keep exploiting the two centre-backs then you think there'd be more goals for them.

Both centre-backs are occupied, they cannot play their way out, they are being caused problems.

  11. HALF-TIMEpublished at 20:50 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

New Year, same old Championship mayhem.

Kieffer Moore's early penalty was saved by Anthony Patterson, Eli Mayenda pounced on Jack Robinson's error to race through and slot the opener, Luke O'Nien turned Gus Hamer's cross-shot into his own net to level it and then Wilson Isidor turned on the style to fire in a third goal in eight minutes to restore Sunderland's lead.

We probably need these 15 minutes to recover, in truth...

  13. CLOSE!published at 41 mins

    Sunderland 2-1 Sheff Utd

Eli Mayenda has another sight of goal as he is played through towards the area.

He drives right of the last man before unleashing a low shot which arrows across goal, past Michael Cooper's dive, but also a yard past the far post.

Don't really want half-time to arrive, to be honest.

  14. Postpublished at 39 mins

    Sunderland 2-1 Sheff Utd

Gus Hamer showcases his vision once again with a delightfully clipped ball through the defence in search of Callum O'Hare's run, only for the ball to skid just past him and through to Anthony Patterson.

So many talents on show in this game.

  15. Postpublished at 39 mins

    Sunderland 2-1 Sheff Utd

Sunderland want more. Jobe Bellingham does well to earn some space to whip in a cross from the left which is dealt with well by the Blades befence, before Trai Hume is played in on the right of the box in space, but can't find a teammate with his low cut-back.

  16. Postpublished at 37 mins

    Sunderland 2-1 Sheff Utd

He won't be feeling quite so bad given what's just happened, but Luke O'Nien has already scored an own goal this season, against Portsmouth, way back in August.

The good news for Black Cats fans interested in omens is that they won 3-1 that day... they'd love a repeat tonight.

  17. 'Beautiful finish'published at 20:38 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

    Sunderland 2-1 Sheff Utd

    Nick Barnes
    BBC Newcastle's Sunderland commentator

I tell you what, Wilson Isidor has done a lot of great work there.

    Beautiful finish.

He still had a lot of work to do, he has gone around him like he was not there.

The two strikers scoring so far for Sunderland, both centre-backs have got a striker to deal with.

  18. goal

GOAL Sunderland 2-1 Sheff Utdpublished at 35 mins

    Wilson Isidor

    Are you not entertained?

This is chaos. Sydie Peck is robbed in midfield and Sunderland spread the ball quickly left for Wilson Isidor who does brilliantly to get past Anel Ahmedhodzic and lash an angled strike low past Michael Cooper.

A fantastic piece of forward play and seven for the season.

    Sunderland are back in front.

  19. 'Fantastic way to respond'published at 20:35 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January

    Sunderland 1-1 Sheff Utd

    Chris Basham
Former Sheffield United defender on BBC Radio Sheffield

Fantastic way to respond to going behind.

We are trying to work out who got the final touch but it does not matter how it's gone in or who scored it, they all count.

    What a game...

It's Gus Hamer smashing in a low cross-shot from the right of the area again, this time it goes in, via an unfortunate deflection into his own goal from Luke O'Nien, who also conceded the penalty.

We've saved the best for last today, I can feel it...

The Blades have been excellent since falling behind.
