Crystal Palace have been slowly finding their form as they look to climb the table after a tough start to the season.

Oliver Glasner has consistently listed the reasons why he thinks Palace have taken a while to get going, including late signings in the summer transfer window and a number of key players at international tournaments until late into pre-season.

But the Eagles boss has found a settled side and made key players match fit. Coming into this match, Palace had lost just once in seven Premier League games (W2, D4).

Glasner's side take on Chelsea next and will hope to continue their current run of form for a top-half finish to the campaign.

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, speaking to Premier League Productions: "I'm very pleased. Everybody expected us against the bottom team at home, but these games are often the difficult ones.

"Today we were very strong from set-plays and scored the goals."

Should Palace's equaliser have been disallowed?: "All over Europe yes, but not in England. This is the Premier League. We were told about this at the start of the season and what I really like is that it's always the same line. If this goal would have been disallowed then many goals from many other teams would have been disallowed.

"Everybody uses the rules to the very edge. This is what we are doing, this is what Arsenal are doing, everybody is doing."

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner hopes that Eberechi Eze's winning goal can be the end of the "suffering" after he scored his first league goal since September.

Eze's goal, which secured all three points for the Eagles over Southampton, is the first he has registered at home all season, with his only other strike coming away in a draw at Chelsea.

"I'm very pleased for him." Glasner said.

"Maybe it's the circle of football. It started with the disallowed goal at Brentford after ten minutes.

"It was the first game of the season and now it's the last game in 2024 and now he scored this goal.

"He was really suffering, it looked like with this special moment.

"He had many big chances, great saves by the keepers, missing by one inch, hitting the post and then all of a sudden it was in his head.

"I could see him, he was suffering. I'm really pleased for him that he scored the game winner."

  4. Pereira on Cunha injurypublished at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    Tottenham 2-2 Wolves

Wolves, who were four points adrift of safety when Vitor Pereira was appointed, moved two points clear of the relegation zone with Sunday's spirited draw at Tottenham.

However, that point came at a cost, as Wolves lost top scorer Matheus Cunha with a suspected hamstring injury.

"This week was a difficult week because we lost [defender] Toti [Gomes] through injury and then at half-time [we lost] Cunha with some problems in the hamstring," said Pereira.

"This is not a squad with a lot of solutions but I think that the players who went in at half-time [losing] showed the true spirit of this team [to finish with a draw]."

Ange cannot point to injuries as the problem because results were poor even with first choices available, the capitulation v Brighton, losing to Palace and Ipswich this season and too many poor performances last season.

Other than Wolves conceding a 10th goal from a corner this season - the worst record in the Premier League - the post-match stats are all very positive for the Midlanders:

    • Vítor Pereira is just the fourth manager to go unbeaten in his first three top-flight league games in charge of Wolves (W2 D1) after Andy Beattie in 1964, Ronnie Allen in 1967 and Sammy Chung in 1977
    • Hwang Hee-chan’s opening goal was Wolves’ sixth Premier League goal this season from outside the penalty area, only Manchester City and Chelsea have more (both 7)
    • Wolves’ Rayan Aït-Nouri has been involved in more Premier League goals than any other defender in 2024 (11 - 5 goals, 6 assists). His two assists on Sunday was the second time he’s registered two goal involvements in a game in a competition, also doing so against Brentford in October this season.

Wolves started December with an equally torrid run, but have ended the month on a high following the arrival of new manager Vitor Pereira.

The former Porto boss was brought in as replacement for Gary O'Neil, who had overseen four consecutive defeats before his sacking.

Wolves beat Leicester (3-0) and Manchester United (2-0) in Pereira's first two matches in charge and fought back to earn a point at Tottenham.

"It was the first time with goals against," said Pereira, referring to the clean sheets Wolves kept in his first two matches.

"I saw the spirit to fight for a good result and this is the spirit that I want. I am very happy with them."

Tottenham's downturn in form has coincided with a nightmare injury list that includes central defenders Christian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies, as well as first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Another defender, full-back Destiny Udogie, limped off after 50 minutes against Wolves.

In his post-match interview with BBC's Match of the Day, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou hinted that he will be looking to add to his squad in the January transfer window.

He said: "I've got a real tired group of players at the moment and you can tell that we are just lacking a bit of sharpness in the areas we need, but they are trying hard."

Tottenham's 2-2 draw at home to Wolves on Sunday meant they took just five points from a possible 21 in the Premier League in December.

Ange Postercoglou's side are 11th in the table, with 24 points from their 19 matches.

The result only intensified the pressure on the former title winner with Celtic.

Under Postecoglou, Tottenham have failed to win in five successive home Premier League games for the first time since October 2008.

Juande Ramos was the last manager to oversee such a run, which led to his sacking.

It might seem like a new contract for Salah is a no-brainer for Liverpool, but you could say the same about when Kevin de Bruyne extended his City contract in 2021, only to then endure a steady decline in fitness and form. You need to think ahead, not just base major decisions on current form, however good that may be in Salah's case.

Former Republic of Ireland striker on the Football Daily podcast

I waited longer than Erling Haaland [to score] - four games is nothing! But it's because he's set the bar so high and everyone expects him to score every week.

When they played against Everton, he didn't look confident with the penalty. He looked very emotional, like he was thinking about it, that he was desperate to score. It can happen for a striker. I've been on runs of 10-12 games and you're thinking 'when am I going to score?' You overthink it and you snatch at things.

I'd be more worried if Haaland wasn't getting chances, but he's still getting chances. I think he'll go on another run and so will City now.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola believes injuries are the primary reason behind City's poor form but says there are areas the club need to target in the upcoming transfer window.

"In some positions we need help," he said.

"When we're all together we're the team we were but with important players out for weeks and months it's so difficult.

"I thought our central defenders would be fit all season but we have struggled - holding midfield and central defenders we need help.

"The market is the market - it's not easy, it's expensive so we will see what the club can do."

It wasn't easy for Man City. If Jamie Vardy takes that opportunity [at 1-0] then the game completely changes and swings Leicester's way.

It was an ugly win for City, one that they desperately needed. Sometimes you just have to find a way to get over the line in any which way you can. Now it is about building confidence.

Manchester City may have recorded their first victory in six on Sunday afternoon but they registered their lowest possession statistic of the season.

The 46.4% mustered by City was the first time this season that they had boasted less possession than their opponents.

It is also just the 14th time Pep Guardiola's side have had less possession during his 323-game reign in the Premier League.

The stats also show City are lacking the intensity we have become accustomed to seeing in Guardiola's teams.

Against Leicester, the club won possession in the final third just twice. Last season, City nicked possession in the final third 7.5 times on average per game.

A reminder that Opta's supercomputer backs up Pep Guardiola's comments, too...

It has given Manchester City just a 0.1% chance of lifting the 2024-25 Premier League trophy.

City are currently most likely to finish fourth (40.8%) according to the data, which, considering their recent run, isn't half bad.

It is still giving Guardiola's side a 27.8% chance of finishing third and just a 6.7% probability of coming second.
