Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We are unable to sustain for 90 minutes, today we proved that again. Commitment and physicality. Clear our minds now by getting results. We are far away from winning the Premier League. We accept there's already no chance of that but we have other things to fight for. FA Cup, top four and winning games helps.

"They were better than us in the second half. We are unable to sustain the aggression and pressing. We just can't right now.

"This is just one game. The game against Manchester United hurt us a lot in terms of confidence. That game killed us. That game was mentally a struggle then tough games against Aston Villa and Everton. It is what it is, we have to hunt for wins and that's life. Most of the players proved again they are ready to fight."

  2. Glass half full or half empty?published at 12:20 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

The seasonal flurry of Premier League matches continues tonight with another three games.

We will have all the build-up to Aston Villa v Brighton, Ipswich v Chelsea and Manchester United v Newcastle a little later on.

Brentford host Arsenal on New Year's Day (Wednesday) in what will be the final match of the 19th round of fixtures - the halfway point of the season.

The question is football fans, are you feeling glass half full or glass half empty about your team's campaign so far?

Click thumbs up if you are feeling positive, thumbs down for negative.

Whilst I'd absolutely love to see Forest finish in the Champions League spots, I think they might just fall short. Fingers crossed I'm wrong. I definitely think they'll get into Europe though!

  4. Today's key talking pointspublished at 12:10 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

If you are just joining us, where have you been?

You have missed a busy morning of reaction to Sunday's Premier League games, which included a bumper win for Liverpool at West Ham that opened an eight-point lead for Arne Slot's side at the top of the table.

The Reds' front three of Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo all made it on to the scoresheet in the 5-0 victory.

We are asking in today's poll - at the top of this page - whether they are a better front three than the title-winning team of 2019-20, when Salah was partnered by Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Salah's latest comments about his contract negotiations with Liverpool, which he says are "far away" from a resolution, have provided another key talking point.

Other items on the agenda have included the latest on Joe Gomez's hamstring injury and Nottingham Forest's rise to second in the Premier League.

You can't rely on clean sheets every week in the Premier League. Everton now have Armando Broja fit, who needs time to find his feet.

Hopefully he will give them a few more goals.

Everton wasted so many crosses, they get into good positions but are being wasteful. They put two good balls into the box and nearly scored off both of them.

They just need to be better in the final third.

Everton sit bottom of the Premier League for shots on target and goals in 2024.

The Toffees with 132 shots and 31 goals remain a distance from the next lowest team in Wolves, who had 156 shots and 51 goals in 2024.

  8. 'We didn't ask enough questions'published at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    Everton 0-2 Nottm Forest

Everton boss Sean Dyche, speaking to BBC MOTD: "They have done that to other teams this season. We didn't deliver it anywhere near in the first half and they did.

"It is hard to break down a packed defence when they get their noses in front. I don't think they had too many chances.

"A packed defence is hard to break down. We didn't ask enough questions overall against a team that is good at seeing a game out."

  9. 'Nottingham Forest are getting stronger'published at 11:49 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    Luke Edwards
Daily Telegraph writer on the Football Daily podcast

[The defence is] the foundation of their success for sure and they've got this wonderful, electric pace on the counter.

I've been expecting teams to work them out. I keep thinking they're going to fall away and drop off, and they're just not. If anything, they're getting stronger.

It's one of the great things about the Premier League at the moment. We had that romantic story of Leicester winning the league and we said it was a once-in-a-generation thing. I agree that I don't think they can win the league, but I said at the time that Leicester can't win the league.

In the past couple of years, you've had Newcastle and Aston Villa getting into the Champions League, so why shouldn't Nottingham Forest now start to believe? If they maintain this form in the second half of the season, they're going to finish in the top four.

Mathematically, yes it’s possible Forest can win the League, however, realistically a top-four finish is more likely, but even then I think Man City will pip them unfortunately.

Chris Wood is a proven Premier League striker, netting double figures in six seasons, previously for Burnley and now Forest.

The New Zealand international scored his 11th league goal of the campaign against Everton with a delightful finish and his goalscoring run is showing no signs of slowing down.

Only the usual suspects of Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland and Cole Palmer have scored more goals in the league this season than Wood.

The 33-year-old is on course to surpass his best top-flight tally of 14 achieved last term as well as for the Clarets in 2019-20, and his 22 goals under Nuno Espirito Santo is the joint-most by a Forest player under one manager.

He is in fine Forest company with that number, alongside Stan Collymore who netted the same for Frank Clark in the 1990s.

There was high praise for Wood on BBC Sport's live text commentary of Sunday's game, when he was compared to a cult hero of Italian football.

Contributor Andrew said: "Wood is running around and scoring like a prime Christian Vieri this season. His abilities have always been under-rated in English football."

LyleStevik89 on X: I think Forest will finish in the top four. All the ingredients are there: A good manager, a good squad, a good spirit, and Tottenham and Man Utd are looking like also-rans. What's more, I doubt many would begrudge them.

Nottingham Forest won the battle early and that was largely down to Elliot Anderson with his intensity from midfield.

He was all over Everton's midfield with pressing. Early on he was driving forward and setting the tempo, letting the Everton midfield know he is around and will be running the show.

That then allows a player like Morgan Gibbs-White the space to do what he wants, as he is so talented.

  14. Forest lend retro feel to tablepublished at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

The Premier League table has a retro feel about it at the halfway stage.

Liverpool's winning machine under Arne Slot lead the way, but their closest current challengers are the ones that have thrown up the real surprise.

With 19 games played, Nottingham Forest lie second and are tussling with the Reds, similar to when they locked horns for silverware in the late 1970s and during the 80s.

Forest won the First Division title in 1978 with Liverpool coming second, while the final league positions were reversed a year later.

During the 80s, Forest finished third on three occasions and, in those seasons, Liverpool twice ended as champions as well as coming runners-up.

Under Brian Clough, Forest shocked the continent by lifting the European Cup in 1979 and retaining the crown a year later.

They have not competed in that competition since the 1980-81 campaign, but can fans start dreaming of hearing the Champions League anthem at the City Ground next season?

What a lot of people forget about Forest is that their first choice midfield partnership - Danilo and Ibrahim Sangare - have been out with long-term injuries since the start of the season. Those two coming back are going to be like new signings for Forest and will make them stronger going into the crowded Jan/Feb calendar with FA Cup fixtures set to come in.

Huge credit must go to Nuno Espirito Santo and I know the owner is very ambitious. He could go in January and spend more money to try to make them kick on.

Do I think they'll win the Premier League? No. Do I think they'll finish in the top four? I don't think they will.

But they have got a chance of the other European places, for where we are in the season and how many points they've got. They'd have bitten your hand off [for this position] after fighting relegation last season.

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo, speaking to BBC MOTD: "We are competing really well, especially today. It was a very tough game and both teams had a very short period of rest.

"We were organised and really committed to help each other. We then exploited well the space Everton gave.

"We had to make a change just before the game. It was a moment to reset, reorganise and try a different thing. The players understood it well.

"It is confidence, the belief and the knowledge that in the final third you need composure. They scored beautiful goals."

All of those outcomes may have seemed unrealistic at the start of the season, but what is realistic for this Forest side now?
