    Everton 0-2 Nottm Forest

Liverpool fan John Gibbons from the Anfield Wrap: "I thought Nottingham Forest came with a game plan and played really well [when they beat Liverpool]. And then since then, they've just kept going and they just seem to be having so much fun and enjoying playing together.

"We've got a title decider in a couple of weeks, haven't we? Liverpool go down to the City Ground, it's going to be a big game."

  2. Why Slot paid Forest highest 'compliment'published at 10:47 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    West Ham 0-5 Liverpool

It was put to Arne Slot in his interview with BBC's Match of the Day after Sunday's 5-0 victory over West Ham that he had coached sides in 49 matches in 2024, 27 with Liverpool and 22 with previous club Feyenoord, and lost just one of them over 90 minutes.

"Compliments to Nottingham Forest," replied Slot. "They were the ones that we lost against."

Liverpool play the return match at second-placed Forest in the Premier League on 14 January.

Liverpool have really kicked on over these three matches either side of Christmas, having had a couple of draws in the Premier League at Newcastle and at home against Fulham. But the difference is that they've simply scored more goals.

They've had a barrage of six against Tottenham, three against Leicester and then five yesterday, which was a record away win for Liverpool against West Ham.

I would say, at the current time, and I would stress that, at the current time, they look unstoppable.

Sam, London: Ref to Apurv’s message at 08:55. The Premier League title is not won after 18 games. Being a Liverpool fan, we have been here before and not got over the line on many occasions. The PL is so competitive (and especially this year) and that is what makes it the toughest. You only have to listen to Arne Slot after nearly every game - where he is drained from the experience. You only have to see how many times Liverpool have had to come back from losing positions. We are still not at the halfway point of the season. All we (LFC team and fans) can do is take it one game at a time. Focus on the three points up for grabs each time. That attitude served us very well in our PL winning year.

Liverpool's owners may have their work cut out with those contract negotiations behind the scenes, but on the field they are marching on regardless.

At least they do according to ...

The latest projections from Opta's supercomputer show that Arne Slot's side now have a 91.3% chance of securing their second Premier League title following Sunday's 5-0 victory against West Ham United.

Arsenal remain second favourites with just a 7.7% probability of claiming the crown while Chelsea and Manchester City sit under 1% on 0.9% and 0.1% respectively.

Despite currently being Liverpool's closest challengers, Nottingham Forest have been given a 0% chance by the supercomputer to become champions and have a most likely finish of 5th (21.4%).

The most important player at Liverpool is Van Dijk. The biggest dent to Liverpool's title hopes would be an injury to him but fortunately he never gets injured (apart from once when we then imploded).

On Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah's contracts expiring...

They are all hungry and they want to be successful.

The first thing they want is to win the Premier League. Then secondly they will want to sort their contracts out.

Because Mo Salah is playing so well he has forced Liverpool to give him what he wants.

Liverpool fan John Gibbons from the Anfield Wrap on which player out of Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk is the most important to sign up: "It's not easy. I think I'd just about go for Mo Salah just because he is phenomenal. And I just can't see Liverpool getting anyone else who could sort of do what he does. I mean, it's hard.

"Virgil's the captain and Trent's the younger player. And so you think you'd have sort of longer with him but Mo looks like he's going to go forever, he is so fantastic and a match winner and they're so hard to get.

"I think you're wise to do everything you can to keep him."

In regards regards Trent Alexander-Arnold, I hear from Madrid that the European champions Real Madrid are very positive about their chances of luring him to the Bernabeu for next season. I'm told Carlo Ancelotti wants it to happen, Alexander-Arnold is their first option to be their right-back after the summer, it is just the player's say-so they are waiting on.

  10. 'Salah is the leading light for Liverpool'published at 10:17 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    West Ham 0-5 Liverpool

    John Murray
BBC Radio 5 Live chief football correspondent on 5 Live Breakfast

That comment [from Mo Salah] after the win at Southampton before Christmas, when he said that at the time he was more out than in, there seems to be a bit of anger in him trying to prove to Liverpool that he should be worth what he wants. And he's doing that in absolute spades at the moment.

So that's 20 goals now this season, as well as all of the assists that you mentioned. And he is the first man to score 20+ goals in eight consecutive seasons. He's done that all eight seasons that he's been at Liverpool.

I think Ian Rush did do that, but not in eight seasons in a row. He is very much the leading light but there are strong performances all over the field for Liverpool, but he is the leading light.

And with every performance, it is a compelling case for Liverpool to make sure that he doesn't head elsewhere at the end of the season?

It is hard to find more superlatives to describe Mohamed Salah because he is incredible. Liverpool were ruthless and he epitomised that.

It is testament to how hard he works that he still looks the same player that arrived at Liverpool. He is a phenomenon. You can't deny the numbers that he puts up week in and week out.

The numbers that he puts up, whether he's the best - everyone will have their own argument, but his numbers are frightening.

Salah is so fit, he is completely ripped.

He will want to do this for the next couple of years and he wants to show everyone what he can do.

    • Mohamed Salah has both scored and assisted in eight different Premier League games for Liverpool this season, already the most any player has done so in an entire Premier League campaign
    • Salah has been involved in 30 goals in just 18 Premier League games this season (17 goals, 13 assists), the fewest appearances any player has needed to reach 30 goal involvements in a single Premier League campaign
    • With another goal and assist on Sunday, Liverpool's Salah has now been involved in 52 goals in all competitions in 2024 (29 goals, 23 assists), more than any other player in Europe's big five leagues.
    • Salah has scored 20+ goals in all competitions in all eight of his seasons with Liverpool. In the Premier League, only Alan Shearer (10) and Harry Kane (9) have had more 20+ goal campaigns than the Egyptian.

I have been enjoying the enormous grin we are seeing a lot of from Mo Salah. He seems incredibly happy. Is it a smile of someone looking to cement his status as a PL great or someone determined to enjoy his last season at Anfield? I’m hoping the former!

He is playing with great freedom and is just enjoying football. As a kid you just want to see players like him. He could have had a hat-trick against West Ham.

So it's not all about Mohamed Salah, as far as Arne Slot is concerned, but the Egypt forward continues to dominate the discussion and debate after scoring his 17th league goal of the season against West Ham.

The 32-year-old also added two more assists, taking his tally for the Premier League season to 13, and set a new league record after weighing in with a goal and an assist in a game for the eighth time this season.

Arne Slot did have one cause for concern after watching centre-back Joe Gomez pull up with a suspected hamstring strain.

The defender was replaced by England team-mate Jarell Quansah in the 37th minute, with first-choice centre-back Ibrahima Konate also currently out with an injury.

"If a player makes a sprint and then has to [come off] we all know it is a hamstring and that's not going to take one or two days, it's going to take longer," said Liverpool boss Slot.

"The positive thing was his replacement Jarell Quansah played an outstanding game. It again shows how important the squad is."

He added: "It's not only talking about Mo Salah and what he does, it is about these squad players, who are really important for us."

Clean sheets are one of the reasons why you win a lot - Arne Slot

Let's hear from Liverpool manager Arne Slot...

The Dutchman may have been left purring by his side's high-scoring win against West Ham, which followed a 6-3 victory at Tottenham and 3-1 win at home to Leicester, but it was the clean sheet he was most pleased with.

"It's one of the reasons why you win a lot," he said. "If you every time have to score two, three or four goals - at the moment we do but it is not maybe sustainable for a longer period of time. Sometimes you need a win by keeping a clean sheet and only scoring one or two goals.

"Today we didn't need a clean sheet but it is always good for the confidence of the back line. Goalkeepers and centre-backs really like this - and managers as well."

Manchester City's demise has helped Liverpool's cause.

Apurv, India:My point was more towards other clubs' supporters who suggested that Liverpool had easy fixtures, other teams were impacted by injuries etc. Regarding Salah, personally, I don't think it will have any impact on his form because had it been an issue, we would've seen it already. Also, he's committed to winning the league going by his comments. Let's see. No doubt that the business end of season will be difficult but credit to the players, they are not showing signs that they are severely impacted by the negotiations.
