The smile on my face last night when I could actually watch MOTD for the first time in ages. It’s the simple things!!

Nipper - long suffering Everton fan

Luton Town v Manchester United 6/10/82. The depression of a dreary first half at an over-officious Kenilworth Road was lifted by a chap next to me in the dangerous turquoise 'cages' of the away end! As the Bavarian Um-Pa-Pa brass band passed by, he launched a pie that hit the bullseye, disappearing down a tuba!!

    Shaun, Warrington

Bromley going 1-0 up against the might Newcastle in last weekend's FA Cup. Never thought in 30-plus years supporting them I'd see that. Absolute bedlam in the stands.

'Everton refreshing under Moyes'published at 15:03 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Gav, Merseyside: Phil, I read your 'Dr Tottenham' article, whilst you make some valid points any chance of a bit of praise for the way Everton played, particularly in the first half?

Afternoon, Gav. Plenty of praise for Everton. It was refreshing to see an Everton team that seemed to start out wanting to actually win a football match rather than starting from base camp of a draw and hope for a win.

Under David Moyes, Everton showed far more urgency, intensity and attacking intent. The manager’s changes also worked, with both Jake O’Brien and Jesper Lindstrom doing well.

And a goal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin will do his confidence the world of good. If Moyes can get him back to form, he will be vital for Everton for the rest of the season.

It was a hugely improved Everton performance. Now they must build on it.

'Newcastle looked a bit jaded'published at 14:58 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Luke, Newcastle: Hi Phil, what were your thoughts on Newcastle's loss at the weekend? An inevitable end to a winning streak or something else? Of course, Bournemouth were fantastic.

Hi, Luke. Not inevitable, but these things can happen. All winning runs usually come to an end. There has not been a lot of rotation at Newcastle United and I thought they looked a bit jaded. I’m sure Eddie Howe is well aware of that and will be finding a way for his players to recover and best utilise his resources.

As you rightly point out, Luke, the defeat was also down a magnificent performance from Bournemouth, who are having a wonderful season under Andoni Iraola.

'No reason why Bournemouth can't challenge for Europe'published at 14:55 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Andy, Dorset: Hi Phil. Never mind the big boys, what about little ol’ AFC Bournemouth for whom European football must be a real possibility after that incredible performance at Newcastle on Saturday, would you agree? And your thoughts on Andoni Iraola?

Hello, Andy. It was a brilliant performance, both tactically from Andoni Iraola but also his players, even with a lengthy injury list. Loved the way they pressed and kept pinching the ball from Newcastle in such dangerous positions.

On current form, and I mean the over the whole season not just now, there is absolutely no reason why Bournemouth cannot challenge for the European places – and how refreshing that would be? I am at Bournemouth v Nottingham Forest on Saturday and can't wait to be there.

As for Iraola, he is doing a wonderful job. The team is well-coached, has a clear strategy and, as we have seen, can stand toe-to-toe with the so-called big boys. He is outstanding.

'Iraola dealing better with injuries than Postecoglou'published at 14:52 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Matt: Hi Phil, are the top clubs (by stature not league position!) over-using the injury excuse? Bournemouth have taken four points from Chelsea and Newcastle away with a bench almost entirely made of youth players!

I wouldn’t say they are making excuses because the injuries are real, but there is no doubt Andoni Iraola is making a better fist of an injury crisis than Spurs and Ange Postecoglou. I’ve actually specifically mentioned Bournemouth in a piece I have written on Spurs this morning.

The Cherries have not had anywhere near as arduous a programme to deal with as Spurs, but Iraola simply marshalled the forces available to him and produced a masterclass in a brilliant win at Newcastle United.

It would be unfair not to mention the injury list Postecoglou is dealing with, but it is the lack of structure and failure to adapt that is a concern. Iraola has done it superbly.

'Relegation question an embarrassment for Man Utd'published at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Mark from Belfast: Manchester United fan for my sins here, do you think United are in a relegation battle? Can I also just say congratulations to Brighton on a very good performance against us yesterday.

Hi, Mark. No, I don’t – but make no mistake this is turning into a very traumatic opening for Ruben Amorim and season for Manchester United.

A league placing of 13th is unacceptable for a club like United but they are still 10 points ahead of the last relegation place and I do not see that much of a turnaround.

It’s still an embarrassment to United that this question is being asked and people are talking about it.

'Large parts of Man Utd squad simply not good enough'published at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Anon: Just wondering what you make of the situation at Old Trafford, particularly the new 3-4-3 system. Is it a way of playing that is so different and difficult, or is this a smokescreen for deeper issues?

I think there is a mixture of elements to this. I think Ruben Amorim is determined to stick to his system but it is not always one the players are comfortable with. It has looked good at Liverpool and Arsenal then fails against Brighton yesterday, although the error from keeper Andre Onana did not help.

The deeper issue is that large parts of Manchester United’s squad are simply not good enough, something Amorim and the club’s new management structure must address urgently in the summer.

'Man Utd haven't made many good decisions under Ratcliffe'published at 14:42 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Phil McNulty Q&A

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

J in Cardiff: With every game that passes, Manchester United's decision to pay extra for Ruben Amorim to try and totally change their style, mid-season with limited (if any) recruitment seems bizarre. Can you think of any good decisions they've made since Jim Ratcliffe's takeover, because I'm struggling?

Manchester United have not made many good decisions under the Ratcliffe regime that immediately spring to my mind.

We have seen the outcome of the decision to not only keep Erik ten Hag, but award him a new contract, before sacking him, then we have also witnessed the fiasco of Dan Ashworth spending as long on gardening leave as he did at Old Trafford before leaving his job as sporting director after only five months.

I have a feeling the appointment of Amorim might be a good decision given time, although things are very rocky at the moment – and he is certainly not slow to deliver some painful home truths.

Happiest football feeling isn't even from my own team. It was seeing Leicester win the league. A proper underdog story that will probably not be eclipsed.

Happiest football moment ever? 5pm on the 14th of May 1988 at Wembley, surrounded by an utterly disbelieving crowd of Wimbledon fans, watching Dave Beasant lift the FA Cup trophy. Incredible.

  13. 'Tottenham were absolutely bullied'published at 14:29 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Everton 3-2 Tottenham

    Nigel Reo-Coker
Former West Ham midfielder on the Football Daily podcast

The best managers always find a way and adapt, but when you look at Ange Postecoglou, he is never going to change and it's always going to be like this.

When I saw this fixture, I always saw Everton getting a win. But the way Tottenham were beaten is the biggest worry. They were absolutely bullied in the first half against an Everton side who have struggled to score all season.

It's the same old story. Why not just change and adapt? As a manager, work with what you have got and get some results and confidence before building on that. But what I am seeing now is the Spurs players feeling sorry for themselves rather than going out there and competing.

There's a serious obsession with spend spend spend now. I think the way Spurs go about it is the correct way, longer term investment. Just look at Chelsea as the other end of the spectrum. Yes, Spurs have trimmed too much fat from the squad which has left them open. Yes, they've bottled the chances they've had. But we're going about it the right way. Levy has built an infrastructure that will mean you wont hear our name up against PSR in the future. Remember Arsenal went through all this after their new stadium too.

    Everton 3-2 Tottenham

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher compared watching Tottenham to watching a kids' academy play.

He told Sky Sports: "You can't be losing 3-0 at Everton at half-time - and it could have been worse. This is a mess. Tottenham are just so naive in everything they do.

"It's like watching a kids' academy play, where the manager keeps telling them to play and results don't matter."

  16. 'Postecoglou would've been sacked anywhere else'published at 14:17 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Everton 3-2 Tottenham

Former West Ham midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker had an alternative viewpoint to Stef's in the latest edition of BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast:

"Ange Postecoglou doesn't have any answers. With the responses and how he has been with the media, it's the frustration that he doesn't have a Plan B. He is not willing to change or adapt and wants to stick or die by his principles.

"If he was anywhere else, he would have got the sack - because of those numbers [one point from a possible 18 points in their last six Premier League matches] and how Tottenham are doing right now is not good enough. Especially for a club that claims to be ambitious and wants to compete in the Champions League, that is not where you want to be."

As a Spurs fan who grew up in a family of United fans, all of us are getting a bit nervous. However, how long was Alex Ferguson the manager before United won the league? Big Ange has had real problems with injuries this season. As long as we stay up and recruit well over the summer, I say give him time to properly embed his philosophy on the club. We're all too quick to call for a sacking these days.

  18. Opta Supercomputer: Where will Tottenham finish?published at 14:09 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

Following Tottenham's 3-2 defeat by Everton, Opta's Supercomputer predicts their most likely finish to be 12th (17.8%), although they have similar percentage chances of finishing as high as 10th (11.1%) and as low as 15th (11%).

Spurs are currently 15th with 24 points from 22 Premier League games. They are eight points clear of the bottom three.

The Supercomputer gives them a 0.1% chance of relegation.

  19. 'Spurs gave the score a respectable look - but it was a deception'published at 14:05 Greenwich Mean Time 20 January

    Everton 3-2 Tottenham

    Phil McNulty
    BBC Sport chief football writer

Tottenham and their manager were hugely flattered by losing by just by one goal, and that margin cannot cover up the abysmal first 45 minutes during which this game was lost.

And while they are clinging to the possibilities offered by a one-goal advantage in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg against Liverpool at Anfield, those hopes will be snuffed out very swiftly if they perform as badly as this.

Ange Postecoglou is unquestionably struggling for resources, with striker Dominic Solanke the latest casualty with a knee injury, but there can be no excuses for a first half that understandably left the travelling fans in a fury, a fury mainly aimed at chairman Daniel Levy.

Spurs gave the score a respectable look with those goals from Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, but in reality it was a deception.

Everton have struggled to create goals and chances all season, yet they cut through Spurs with embarrassing ease in that first half, scoring three and having more chances.

The nerves kicked in when Spurs mounted their late rally, but the mediocrity of that first 45 minutes cost them dearly and will turn an even more unforgiving spotlight on Postecoglou.
