Paris St-Germain are running away with the French league so a common problem is when they play in the Champions League knowing where they stand.

I don't want to push Liverpool into the favourite role, but I think they could be the team that goes through with the second leg at home.

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Arne Slot says his side cannot be called the best team in Europe until they have won the Champions League.

The Reds are in France to face in-form Paris St-Germain on Wednesday in the first leg of their last-16 tie.

Prior to the match, PSG head coach Luis Enrique described Slot's side as "an almost-perfect" team.

Liverpool topped the league phase of the Champions League and currently lead the Premier League by 13 points.

"It's a nice compliment to get but the best team in Europe has to win the Champions League but we are far away from that, starting with a very difficult game [against PSG]," Slot said.

"I think the best team in Europe at the moment is still Real Madrid as they won this competition last season."

Real Sociedad v Man Utd (Thur, 17:45 GMT)

Manchester United's players looked out on their feet at Old Trafford on Sunday as they crashed out of the FA Cup to Fulham.

They trained this morning at Carrington ahead of a short flight to northern Spain for tomorrow's Europa League last-16 encounter with Real Sociedad.

Aside from injury issues, we also know 17-year-old striker Chido Obi will not be involved in the game.

United opted not to register the former Arsenal trainee for UEFA competition, believing he wouldn't be needed.

But a spate of injuries changed that dynamic, and Obi made his third substitute appearance against Fulham.

You can read more here on why Chido Obi will not feature for Man Utd tomorrow night.

  7. What precedent is there for a longer ban for Liam Roberts?published at 13:20 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Aleksandar Mitrovic and Eden Hazard have both been the subject of 'insufficient punishment' appeals previously, following the Football Association's decision to ask for an increase to Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts' ban.

Former Fulham striker Mitrovic was banned for eight games and fined £75,000 after pushing referee Chris Kavanagh in the Cottagers' FA Cup loss at Manchester United in 2023.

However, in 2013 Chelsea forward Eden Hazard avoided a longer ban after being sent off for kicking 17-year-old ball boy Charlie Morgan in the League Cup semi-final second leg at Swansea.

Despite the FA attempting to extend his three-game ban for violent conduct by claiming the punishment was "clearly insufficient" Chelsea successfully argued to an independent panel that any longer would be excessive.

  8. England's left-back optionspublished at 13:15 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March

    England

Earlier, we brought you the news of Newcastle and England left back Lewis Hall being ruled out for the rest of the season as he requires foot surgery.

During the last international break in November, Hall received his first cap off the bench against Greece and played the full 90 minutes against the Republic of Ireland in the Uefa Nations League.

The 20-year-old was the only natural left-back picked in that squad and given Luke Shaw has yet to play this year, new England manager Thomas Tuchel may need to find a new option now Hall is out.

Crystal Palace's Tyrick Mitchell is comfortable in that position and received his only two England caps in 2022, playing the full 90 minutes against Ivory Coast at left-back.

His team-mate Ben Chilwell is on loan from Chelsea and is a player Tuchel knows very well, but the 28-year-old has only played one full 90 minute stint this season - against Millwall in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Ipswich left-back Leif Davis is second behind only Fulham's Antonee Robinson for successful crosses for that position in the Premier League, but is uncapped.

A safer option may be Chelsea's Levi Colwill, who despite being a central defender has played on the left and made his Blues debut under Tuchel.

  9. 'The level of performance will give them great confidence'published at 13:10 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March

    FT: PSV 1-7 Arsenal

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on the Football Daily podcast

The way the Premier League has panned out, the Champions League is the best chance for Arsenal to win a trophy. So to be as comfortable as they were this evening, that is a really important step in the right direction.

The level of performance will give them great confidence, the chances that they created and [Ethan] Nwaneri again, his performance once again, you think about the young players that they will come into this team and hit the ground running and then they'll take a dip but he looks absolutely phenomenal.

In terms of the Champions League, there is still a long way to go but when you have a defence which is as good as Arsenal's, they'll take some stopping in this competition.

I can understand why [fans] were concerned about this fixture because PSV, their recent performance in the Eredivisie hasn't been good but in the Champions League they've been really strong at home and Arsenal have blanked in the last couple of games, so for them to actually win the game first and foremost but to win in the manner which they did do was phenomenal.

They were ruthless with their finishing but some of the combination of play in the final third was sensational. They shared the goals about. Martin Odegaard looked back to his very best. They were really strong all over the pitch and that centre-back pairing, phenomenal they are.

Mikel Arteta he couldn't have seen the nature of this victory and for them to run out winners as they did, it's great for them now because with the second leg, that's a foregone conclusion, there is no way back for PSV, it's job done and looking forward to the quarters now.

I'm a sports fan and generally can't stand the NFL halftime show. I feel it generally kills the momentum of the game, and I'd rather hear a full song than a 15-minute greatest hits medley. I imagine most football fans would agree. However, I don't think it's intended to appeal to us. Maybe by attracting a new audience, it becomes more of a family event, more inclusive?

    J, Cardiff

It's baffling how the people running the most popular and successful sport on earth keep trying to introduce things from less popular and successful sports. The World Cup just needs to be in a football country, other than that you can leave it as it is and it'll break records.

    Yasser, Ipswich

How long will the half time show be? 15 minutes is surely optimal as a break period during intense elite football. It’s certainly the standard and what footballers are used to. It’s not like American football when extended breaks are the norm. Lethargy and achey muscles, injury prevention, hydration and fuelling all need to be considered for such a change and it feels to me that the entertainment is being considered more than the sport and the players.

I think the main difference is [from their recent form] Arsenal were able to establish control pretty early on in the match. I think it was 40, 45 minutes before PSV really strung two or three passes together. When you have that much control, you can start committing players forward and they did that with [Jurrien] Timber and [Myles] Lewis-Skelly before he came off.

They were able to be that expansive side and create those overloads and really overwhelm PSV. It was only five minutes after PSV made it 3-1, you thought, hang on they can be back in this but Arsenal put that to bed within five minutes of the second-half with two quick goals.

I think it's so open, you look at Real Madrid's domestic form and I think in recent times, away from home I think they've struggled, off memory and there's no reason why on any given day that Arsenal can't beat Real Madrid and as I say, the key to Arsenal is defensively they are really strong.

Real Madrid have great attacking talent but Arsenal are capable, I am sure of a shut out, in that respect. Arsenal can beat anybody, I'm absolutely convinced about that. They've got a real chance of winning the Champions League.

If England get to the World Cup final, we will probably all be glad of something to distract us from our usual dire football. Besides, the half-time show will probably be over quicker than a VAR offside check.

  19. What happens to Nwaneri to when Saka returns?published at 12:25 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at the PSV Stadion

Ethan Nwaneri scored his eighth goal of the season in 28 games in all competitions in the thrashing of PSV.

The biggest compliment that Nwaneri is paid by his team-mates is that they constantly look to give him the ball such is their faith that the youngster will create something for the team.

The next question, once Arsenal get over their injury crisis will be where does Nwaneri fit once Kai Havertz, Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are back fit and available.

Nwaneri is able to play in a number of positions both in attack and in midfield.

Arteta has also spoken about how Nwaneri has been considered as a central striker, but it may be a position he takes on once the 17-year-old matures.

With his lethal finishing in front of goal it's not hard to see why Nwaneri taking up that role could be such an attractive option.

Bukayo Saka will take the right side of attack Nwaneri is currently holding once he is fit, but that does not mean Nwaneri will be out of the picture.

Captain Martin Odegaard occupies the right side of Arsenal's midfield but the Gunners have had a problem with their 'left number eight' spot and have recently used Declan Rice and Mikel Merino there.
