  2. Liam Roberts: When have FA previously sought further punishment?published at 10:50 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March

With the FA seeking an increased ban for Millwall keeper Liam Roberts following his foul on Jean-Philippe Mateta, there is some precedent for players being given longer suspensions in special circumstances.

Former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic was banned for eight games in 2023 by an independent commission after pushing referee Chris Kavanagh in their FA Cup loss at Manchester United.

Mitrovic received a three-match ban for the sending-off, three for violent conduct and an additional two for "improper, abusive, insulting and threatening" language. He was also fined £75,000.

In an apology to team-mates and supporters, Mitrovic said: "On a personal level, I regret my actions that led to me being sent off. I allowed my frustration to get the better of me, and how I reacted was wrong."

  4. Which incidents has Oliver been involved in recently?published at 10:40 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March

Referee Michael Oliver has made headlines three times since the end of January due to decisions he has made during matches.

    • Myles Lewis-Skelly's sending off against Wolves was overturned after an independent regulatory commission upheld Arsenal's claim of wrongful dismissal.
    • Merseyside derby drama which saw four red cards handed out after the final whistle, including one to Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
    • Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts' high challenge on Crystal Palace forward Jean-Philippe Mateta which resulted in a red card needed VAR intervention after Oliver failed to spot the incident in real time.
  5. Oliver to miss Premier League this weekendpublished at 10:35 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March

BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Referee Michael Oliver will not be involved in a Premier League game this weekend.

The Premier League official came under increased scrutiny on Saturday after failing to spot goalkeeper Liam Roberts’ challenge on Jean-Philippe Mateta in real time during Crystal Palace’s FA Cup win over Millwall.

Roberts was sent off following the intervention of VAR after catching Mateta in the head with his boot. Mateta had to have 25 stitches inserted into the injury and Roberts apologised afterwards.

Oliver has been at the centre of a number of high profile incidents this season. On Tuesday, it was revealed Liverpool boss Arne Slot said he would blame the north-east official if Liverpool lost the Premier League title following a stormy end to the Merseyside derby at Goodison Park last month.

It is not unusual for the Premier League to rotate its officials. The last time Oliver had no role in across a full round of matches was matchweek 22.

Oliver will be in charge of tonight’s Champions League encounter between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, where he will be accompanied by regular assistants Stuart Burt and James Mainwaring. Mainwaring was on duty with Oliver at Selhurst Park and also does not have a game at the weekend.

Oliver’s other assistant from the Palace game, Steven Meredith, will be on the line for Chelsea’s home game with Leicester.

Burnley's 12-game Championship clean sheet streak came to an end after they conceded a goal to Cardiff City last night.

The promotion chasing Clarets had not conceded in the league since 21 December, a run of 1,132 minutes until Yousef Salech's 42nd minute opener last night.

Last month, club minority owner and ex-NFL star JJ Watt had made a deal with goalkeeper James Trafford that he would come out of retirement for American football team Cincinnati Bengals if Trafford did not concede a goal for the rest of the season.

On X last night, he said: "What an unbelievable run for Traff and the boys. An improbable bond formed from across the pond. Bengals fans are welcome on Turf Moor any time."

  8. Haraldsson earns Lille draw in Dortmundpublished at 10:21 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March

    FT: Borussia Dortmund 1-1 Lille

    Champions League

Hakon Haraldsson scored the equaliser as Lille fought back to earn a draw at Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

Dortmund had taken the lead through a brilliant strike from Karim Adeyemi in a first half in which last season's runners-up were by far the superior side.

But Haraldsson's goal during Lille's much-improved showing after the break put the tie in the balance before the return leg in France.

Lille have never reached the Champions League quarter-finals, but with this creditable draw at Dortmund, Bruno Genesio's side have put themselves in good stead.

In a poor first half for the visitors, they were a shadow of the side that beat Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid to finish seventh in the competition's league phase.

But their performance picked up after the break and Lille should be brimming with confidence before the return leg at Stade Pierre-Mauroy, where they have scored 11 goals in four games and not lost despite visits from Real Madrid, Juventus, Sturm Graz and Feyenoord.

Goal-line clearances don't get much bigger than Kristine Lilly's header off the line in extra time of the 1999 Women's World Cup final. If that goes in, China wins and the final never goes to penalties, which of course the US won.

  10. What happened on Saturday?published at 10:12 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March

    Millwall

Liam Roberts was sent off in the ninth minute of the FA Cup fifth-round defeat by Crystal Palace on Saturday for a dangerous challenge which left striker Jean-Philippe Mateta needing 25 stitches in his left ear.

Roberts missed Tuesday's 2-0 defeat by Bristol City at the Den as he was serving the first match of a three-game ban, which could now be extended.

Palace chairman Steve Parish described the challenge as "the most reckless I've ever seen".

Millwall said Roberts contacted Mateta after the match "with an apology which was accepted immediately".

A statement from the Championship club says: “Millwall acknowledges the FA’s statement and will continue to support Liam who has been subjected to horrendous online abuse since Saturday’s collision.”

Millwall also released a statement earlier this week criticising some of the media coverage of the incident.

The club have also condemned the abuse received on social media by Roberts following the challenge. They have not made a statement regarding some fans chanting "let him die" towards Jean-Philippe Mateta as he received treatment on the pitch at Selhurst Park.

BBC Sport understands Millwall are intending to fight any attempt to increase Roberts' ban.

  14. Howe losing key cog with Hall losspublished at 09:59 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March

    Newcastle United

Only two players have played more minutes for Newcastle United this season than left-back Lewis Hall - Bruno Guimaraes and Dan Burn.

Hall has made 34 appearances in all competitions and racked up 2,657 minutes of playing time.

That's only bettered by Guimaraes with 2,819 and Burn with 2,894.

Lewis Hall will be a big miss for Newcastle.

The 20-year-old has played in all of the Magpies' 27 Premier League games this season, registering four assists, which ranks him joint-third for left-backs in the league.

With 34 chances created he sits fourth for left-backs in the league, and he is third for successful crosses (33).

His best stat comes from successful passes (1121), putting him behind only Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol (1556).

We'll take a look into some of the statistics shortly but there is no denying that Hall will be a miss for the Magpies.

It's a blow for Thomas Tuchel, too, who is set to name his first England squad on 14 March.

Atletico Madrid may have been on the wrong side of the scoreline last night but that shouldn't overshadow the fact that striker Julian Alvarez is in the form of his life.

While he was playing second-fiddle to Erling Haaland at Manchester City, he has cemented himself as the main man in Madrid.

His goal last night was his 22nd of the season in all appearances, a feat that has helped his side to second in La Liga, one point behind leaders Barcelona.

Alvarez needs to find the net just two more times before the end of the season to match his best ever scoring season in professional football.

  20. Rodrygo underrated? 'Not for us'published at 09:26 Greenwich Mean Time 5 March

FT: Real Madrid 2-1 Atletico Madrid

    Real Madrid

This was a Madrid derby defined by three moments of outstanding individual brilliance.

First, it was Rodrygo. The Brazilian beat the defender for pace to sprint on to Federico Valverde's pass before cleverly cutting back to confidently sweep Real into an early lead.

He had a penalty appeal waved away moments later as he again got the better of Javi Galan, who appeared to grab hold of Rodrygo and step across him in the box.

Asked if Rodrygo was underrated, Carlo Ancelotti told TNT Sports: "Not for us. Rodrygo for us, he helped us win the Champions League, he helped us a lot to win the Champions League in the last three years."

Rodrygo is often characterised as the third hand in Madrid's vaunted front three, with a lower profile than Vinicius Jr or Kylian Mbappe.

But while the other two have endured injuries and fluctuating form, Rodrygo has been excellent this season with 13 goals and seven assists across all competitions.
