  2. Mourinho's best linespublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Fenerbahce v Man Utd (Thurs 20:00 BST)

Former Chelsea, Manchester United and now Fenerbahce boss Jose Mourinho was in fine form this afternoon ahead of facing former club United in the Europa League on Thursday.

In case you missed it, here are some of his best lines from earlier today.

    • On Manchester City's Premier League charges, Mourinho quipped: ""As you know, we won the Europa League [in 2017] and we finished second in the Premier League [in 2018]. I think we still have a chance to win that league because maybe they punish Man City with points and maybe we win that league and then they have to pay me the bonus and give me the medal."
    • On former club Manchester United: "I wish the best to Man United since the moment I left."
    • On them sticking with Erik ten Hag: "What happened for sure, because it's very objective, is they keep faith in the coach, they support the coach, the coach is staying season after season and that means stability, it means trust, and they are giving him conditions to keep developing his job. That was different in relation to me."
    • On Sir Alex Ferguson: "He is amazing, incredible. When my Netflix documentary comes out, you will know why I have so much respect. I don't know the situation, it doesn't matter why or what. He has the love and respect of every Man United fan around the world. That is more important than the ambassadorial role or money he doesn't need."

Premier League leaders Liverpool have taken a weakened squad to Germany for tonight's Champions League tie at RB Leipzig.

Portugal forward Diogo Jota has not recovered from the blow to the chest that forced him off during Sunday's 2-1 win at home to Chelsea.

Goalkeeper Alisson, defender Conor Bradley, midfielder Harvey Elliott and forward Federico Chiesa have also missed out on the trip to Germany, with Liverpool attempting to make it three wins from three in the Champions League.

Manager Arne Slot said that it was difficult to judge when Jota would return, while he added that Chiesa had missed pre-season which "makes it difficult for him to make the step towards the intensity levels the rest of the team is at at the moment".

Atalanta v Celtic (Wed, 17:45 BST)

The brutal truth of Celtic's misery years in Europe is that the player who has been the totem of this team for so long is also the one who has suffered the most when things have gone wrong on the testing grounds of Spain, France, Germany and beyond.

Callum McGregor, 31, is a modern great of the club, but he bears the scars of Celtic's failings in unforgiving places like few others. It's him and James Forrest. They have run the full gamut, from Brendan Rodgers to Neil Lennon to Ange Postecoglou to Rodgers 2.0.

Rodgers has won 23% of his European group and knockout games as Celtic manager, losing 63%. Postecoglou won 21%, Lennon, in his second spell, won 36%. McGregor was there for the vast majority of them - 58 games, 15 victories, 26% success rate across eight-and-a-bit seasons.

It's a lamentable return and if the bookmakers are to be believed then it's going to continue, with bells on. They all think Atalanta will beat Celtic comfortably in round three of the Champions League on Wednesday.

In the betting for first scorer, the first nine options are Atalanta players, then it's Adam Idah, then a bunch of other home players.

  5. Absent De Bruyne 'doesn't feel good' - Guardiolapublished at 15:14 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Manchester City v Sparta Prague (Wed, 20:00 BST)

Kevin De Bruyne picks up an injury during the match against Inter MilanImage source, Reuters

Kevin de Bruyne "doesn't feel good" and will not be rushed back into action, says Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

The 33-year-old has missed the Premier League champions' past six fixtures with a muscular problem and is unlikely to feature in Wednesday's Champions League match at home against Sparta Prague.

City are already without Rodri and Oscar Bobb with long-term injuries.

"Except for Rodri and Oscar, the other ones are in training and getting better, but guys like Kevin, for example, are not exactly fit," the manager said.

"It's not a new issue but he doesn't feel completely fine. Kevin is not 22 years old, he has to be fit for his football. He doesn't feel comfortable that he can express his incredible potential at his best.

"He is training better but he doesn't feel good. He said he doesn't feel good. If you don't feel good, take your time."

  6. 'The moment you are not 100 per cent focused on the job in hand you get punished'published at 15:11 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Leicester v Nottingham Forest (Friday, 20:00 BST)

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Leicester boss Steve Cooper refused to speak about his Nottingham Forest past ahead of his reunion.

The 44-year-old faces Forest for the first time since being sacked last December at the King Power Stadium on Friday.

Cooper - who spent just over two years at the City Ground - guided Forest back to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years when they won the Championship play-offs in 2022.

The Foxes are looking for three straight wins after victories over Bournemouth and Southampton and Cooper was eager to steer clear of his past.

He said: "We did all that in the summer, it’s about the work with the club here and the players here, it doesn’t matter who we play now, that’s completely where my focus is.

"That’s enough to consume me and my mind. People that know me will know I stay on task with the job I do and don’t let anything interfere with that. That is the same this week.

"I don't want to think about anything else because the moment you are not 100 per cent committed or focused on the job in hand you get punished."

  7. 'It will be important for me to be part of that'published at 15:07 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Leicester v Nottm Forest (Fri, 20:00 BST)

    Leicester City

Leicester City manager Steve Cooper on how Leicester's ownership differs to that of Nottingham Forest's: "The most important question to ask about ownership this week is it’s the anniversary of the really sad story which happened six years ago. It’s where everyone’s mindset should be if we want to talk about ownership.

"We will be paying our respects to that as a club and rightly so - it will be important for me to be part of that in my position."

  8. Vestegaard suffers slight set-backpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Leicester v Nottm Forest (Fri, 20:00 BST)

    Leicester City

Leicester City manager Steve Cooper on team news: "Jannik [Vestergaard] has had a reoccurrence with his ankle which ruled him out for selection for Southampton so that was a bit of a set-back for him but shouldn't rule him out for too long. Apart from that, we are as we were."

More on Vestergaard: "It's something that he's had before and with him being an experienced player he knows his body well and he can manage it. It's a little bit inconclusive at the moment but hopefully he won't be out for too long."

Leicester v Nottm Forest (Fri, 20:00 BST)

Let's get a final few quotes from Leicester City boss Steve Cooper.

Nottingham Forst manager Nuno Espirito Santo said they are 'trying to follow the amazing work of Steve' at the club, who took them up to the Premier League in 2022.

  10. Who could rival Vinicius Jr for Ballon d'Or?published at 14:54 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

    RodriImage source, Getty Images

There are 30 names on the Ballon d'Or's shortlist, including Englishmen Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Cole Palmer.

Vinicius Jr is the favourite and his closest challenger appears to be defensive midfielder Rodri, who helped Manchester City win the Premier League title and Spain lift the European Championship last campaign.

Real Madrid forward Vinicius scored 26 goals and made 12 assists in 51 appearances for club and country last season, and would become just the third person not named Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo to win the Ballon d'Or since 2007.

The others are team-mate Luka Modric in 2018 and Karim Benzema in 2022. Not bad company that.

  11. 'Extraordinary' Vinicius Jr 'will win Ballon d'Or'published at 14:50 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

    Real Madrid 5-2 Borussia Dortmund

    Vinicius JrImage source, Getty Images

Minutes after Real Madrid fans were singing for Vinicius Jr to win the Ballon d'Or, the Brazil forward insisted he wanted to "stay at the club forever".

Vinicius Jr scored a sensational hat-trick against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday to help his side come from 2-0 down to win 5-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu.

He could not have timed his treble better with the Ballon d'Or, widely regarded as football's most prestigious individual trophy, awarded on Monday, 28 October.

After the match, Real manager Carlo Ancelotti called Vinicius Jr "an extraordinary character" and insisted he "will win the Ballon d'Or" based off his performances last season.

The talk is that the 24-year-old is the favourite to win the prestigious accolade having led Real to a La Liga-Champions League double last season, scoring in the Champions League final and also later being named as the competition's best player.

  12. 'Leicester are playing good'published at 14:42 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Leicester v Nottm Forest (Fri, 20:00 BST)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo on facing Leicester City: "Tough team, tough match. They have come from two good performances and two good results, it’s not easy to achieve back-to-back wins in the Premier League, they have done it. That should tell that they are in a good moment playing good.

"It is going to be hard and tough and you go there to try and fight and be better than them. It’s always the same philosophy."

  13. 'Cooper achieved something amazing'published at 14:38 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Leicester v Nottm Forest (Fri, 20:00 BST)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo on facing former Forest boss Steve Cooper: "Today it is normal, managers who have previously managed one team then go to the other.

"That’s not the point. The point is that Steve did an amazing job here at Forest and he will always be remembered by the club, by the fans.

"He achieved something amazing that put us in the Premier League and we are trying to follow the amazing work of Steve."

  14. 'Gibbs-White's fitness is day by day'published at 14:33 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Leicester v Nottm Forest (Fri, 20:00 BST)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo on team news before facing Leicester City on Friday: "We’re still assessing. It was a tough game so we are still assessing with one day to go but players are still recovering and we are still assessing."

On Morgan Gibbs-White's injury: "It’s a day by day process, let’s see. He’s better today, let’s hope he is better tomorrow and keeps progressing like all of the players."

  15. 'I don't want to comment about Marinakis' ban'published at 14:27 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Leicester v Nottm Forest (Fri, 20:00 BST)

    Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest manager Nuno Espirito Santo on owner Evangelos Marinakis’ five-match ban: "No, we didn’t have a chance to speak about it. It is an issue that is not of my concern and I don’t want to comment about that."

On whether negative headlines are distracting: "Hopefully not. We have to stick to what we can control inside of the pitch. But hopefully, it doesn’t distract us and we keep on being focussed and being switched on for what is inside of the pitch."

On not being on the sidelines at an away ground in Leicester: "We have taken care of that and making sure things go normal like they did in this game. We have constant communication with the coaching staff, we know that we are trying to prepare that in Leicester and hopefully, we can do the same. What I want is to be in touch with the coaching staff."

  16. Forest's Marinakis appeal still stands despite damning reasonspublished at 14:23 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Nottingham Forest are still appealing the five-game stadium ban handed to owner Evangelos Marinakis by the Football Association.

The FA released the written reasons from an independent regulatory commission on Tuesday.

It said Marinakis, who was charged with misconduct, spat on the floor as match officials walked past following the 1-0 home defeat to Fulham last month.

In his defence, Marinakis claimed he had a hacking cough because he smokes two or three cigars a day and the incident was unintentional.

The commission rejected this defence, pointing to the fact none of the officials' statements mentioned coughing and CCTV footage of the tunnel backed up that assertion.

The written reasons behind the decision said there was "no excuse" for such an "an egregious display of disrespectful behaviour" that could "fuel disrespect towards match officials".

Marinakis' punishment includes all stadiums, not just the City Ground.

It followed boss Nuno Espirito Santo being given a three-game touchline ban for his reaction to Morgan Gibbs-White's red card in September's 2-2 draw at Brighton. Gibbs-White was also given a one-match suspension for his own reaction.

  17. Cooper on adding 'experience and know-how' to the squadpublished at 14:21 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Leicester v Nottm Forest (Fri, 20:00 BST)

    Leicester City

Leicester City manager Steve Cooper, speaking with Sky Sports, on the "experience and know-how" brought by summer signings Jordan Ayew and Facundo Buonanotte: "We feel we have a good variety in the team, both in positions and age and experience. We keep saying that this is a Premier League club in every shape or form, but we left and we came back and we have to try and become an established Premier League team again.

"It was important we brought in extra players in the summer and in they had to bring some experience and know-how."

  18. 'We enjoy being part of this club'published at 14:16 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Leicester v Nottm Forest (Fri, 20:00 BST)

    Leicester City

More from Leicester City manager Steve Cooper's interview with Sky Sports News, on how much he's enjoying life with the Foxes: I've really enjoyed it to be fair. It's a great infrastructure, wonderful facilities and because of that, myself first and foremost and the staff take our responsibility very serious. We enjoy our work and enjoy being part of this club. Having the two victories in the last two games has been great because we have seen the joy it has brought to the fans, the staff and the players."

  19. 'It doesn't matter who we are playing' - Cooper on facing Forestpublished at 14:10 British Summer Time 23 October 2024

Leicester v Nottm Forest (Fri, 20:00 BST)

    Leicester City

Leicester City manager Steve Cooper, speaking to Sky Sport News, on facing old side Nottingham Forest: "I'm looking forward to it like any other game. It's a very good culture here and even though we didn't get the results in the early season, it's always been a motivated and hard-working training ground.

"We look forward to every single game day. Forest is the next game, it doesn't matter who we are playing because we are so focused on ourselves. We are enjoying the journey that we are on."

Right, we are now waiting on those two Premier League news conferences - Leicester City and Nottingham Forest.

The two Midlands clubs will face each other at King Power Stadium on Friday.

Foxes boss Steve Cooper was, of course, previously manager of Forest and spoke to Sky Sports News earlier.

Here is a taste of what he had to say...
