Arsenal have confirmed that under-18s boss Jack Wilshere is departing the club to join Norwich City as a first-team coach.

Last week, we reported that Wilshere was expected to join Norwich's backroom staff and the Gunners have now confirmed the news on X.

Arsenal posted on X: "Thank you for everything, Jack (followed by a heart emoji).

"Jack Wilshere is leaving his role as Under-18s head coach to join Norwich City as a first-team coach.

"Everyone at the club wishes him the very best as his journey in coaching continues."

  2. Raya 'has come into his own' this seasonpublished at 10:14 British Summer Time

    Arsenal 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

    Matthew Upson
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

He's grown into it (the number one spot) and coming in I don't think (Arsenal boss) Mikel Arteta made his job any easier. The way that was handled and communicated and put out into the media and how it was publicly was really difficult for David Raya.

We talk about Aaron Ramsdale and rightly so, he was disappointed and it's pretty harsh - but him having to handle that pressure and coming into a position with a goalkeeper that had done really well. To come in and then have the confidence - because he had a couple of wobbles and made a couple of mistakes - he's come through that and shown that he is a top keeper and you can see why Arteta has made the switch that raised a few eyebrows at the time.

He, certainly this season, has come into his own and that confidence is at a real high.

  3. 'Arteta wouldn't have wanted to make such heavy weather of it'published at 10:07 British Summer Time

    Arsenal 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

    Chris Sutton
Ex-Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast

Going into the game it was about responding to the loss at Bournemouth but he wouldn't have wanted to make such heavy weather of it like he did do.

Gabriel Jesus - he does so many good things in the game, he works exceptionally hard, his link-up play is good but his finishing has let him down for a number of seasons now - he missed a big opportunity just before half-time to give them a bit of breathing space. [Leandro] Trossard had the really tame penalty in the second-half and all of a sudden Shakhtar got that confidence from somewhere and pushed Arsenal back.

It was an excellent save (from David Raya) at the end and once again he got them out of trouble but all things being equal, it's a really positive result and they've had a good start to the Champions League campaign.

  4. 'There were holes in that performance'published at 09:59 British Summer Time

    Arsenal 1-0 Shakhtar Donetsk

    Matthew Upson
Former Arsenal defender on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast

I think you have to look at the fact that it's the Champions League and if you win at home and keep a clean sheet then it's a positive result.

Arsenal will want to have been clearer than that 1-0 lead but whenever you miss that amount of chances and the opposition gain that little bit of momentum and positivity, you know there is going to be one chance at some point in that last 5/10 minutes.

The defensive and goalkeeping set-up really answered the question and did what they have done all season and were really solid and got the win but I think the manner of that is going to wear thin eventually and it isn't going to be enough.

I think they will be happy with the result and rightly so because it's the Champions League and you win at home but there were holes in that performance and with the injuries and what's next, there are probably quite a few questions that they will want to answer.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says the injury suffered by defender Riccardo Calafiori during the 1-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk is "a bit of a worry".

The Italian, who joined from Bologna in a summer deal worth up to £42m, went off in the second half of Tuesday's Champions League game after seemingly twisting his right knee.

Arsenal are already without key attacking players Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka, while defender Jurrien Timber is also injured.

"He felt something, he could not continue playing," Arteta said of Calafiori.

"It is a bit of a worry."

The Gunners, who are third in the Premier League table, face league leaders Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

  7. Arsenal edge past Shakhtar in Champions Leaguepublished at 09:38 British Summer Time

Arsenal beat Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League thanks to an own goal by goalkeeper Dmytro Riznyk as they bounced back from defeat by Bournemouth at the weekend.

Gabriel Martinelli’s effort in the 29th minute bounced off the post and hit the Shakhtar keeper in the back before trickling over the line as the home side's dominance paid off.

The Gunners started the match brightly and Riccardo Calafiori should have opened the scoring, before Gabriel Jesus had a good chance after the goal but was denied by Riznyk.

Shakhtar were well organised and provided a threat on the counter-attack with winger Eguinaldo keeping the Arsenal backline on their toes.

Mikel Arteta's Arsenal side are already struggling with injury problems and were without captain Martin Odegaard and key man Bukayo Saka.

Jhon Duran has made a habit of coming off the substitutes bench and scoring for Aston Villa this season.

On Tuesday, the Colombia forward made his first start at Villa Park for 11 months and marked it with his side's second goal against Bologna in the Champions League.

Duran's celebrations were cut short when he was immediately replaced by Ollie Watkins, and he showed his displeasure by kicking the back of one of the dugout seats in frustration.

Unai Emery is not too upset with Duran's reaction, however.

Duran now has seven goals in all competitions while Watkins has five - two forwards delivering goals as Villa enjoy one of their best starts to a season for years.

Asked if he had any issues with Duran's reaction, Emery said: "No. I am managing everything and the reaction of players.

"We are sending a message in the dressing room: respect our values and try and be mature and be responsible. It's not only Jhon Duran, some other players react.

    "But it's under my control."

  9. Postpublished at 09:31 British Summer Time

Talking of Jhon Duran, his angry reaction to being taken off, almost immediately after scoring to put Aston Villa 2-0 up against Bologna, provided the only real question mark over what was a perfect Champions League performance at Villa Park...

  10. 'Get excited'published at 09:29 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa 2-0 Bologna

    Guillem Balague
Spanish football journalist on BBC Radio 5 Live

What's interesting is, Unai Emery has been saying all along that the focus is on the Premier League and the players are like 'yeah, yeah'.

The Champions League comes along and everyone seems to have taken themselves to a different level.

Everything is possible. In the knockout stages he's taken Villarreal to the semi-finals of the Champions League as well as winning the Europa League, so yeah get excited.

They may not have individual players where you think they will end up at Barcelona or Real Madrid, with the exception of Jhon Duran and Ollie Watkins, but he seems to have got every answer to whatever problem the rivals raise.

Was at the Villa game last night and delighted by the performance (if not the price). Are they realistic contenders for the Champions League? Probably not, but just the fact people are asking the question shows how far they've come.

  12. Aston Villa 'haven't really got into fifth gear yet'published at 09:18 British Summer Time

    Jacob Tanswell
    Football writer for the Athletic

What is so astounding is that they seem to do everything so calmly. There never seems to be any jeopardy - it just feels like it is always part of Emery's plan. There were missed chances in the first half, Bologna went man-for-man all over the pitch and stylistically it was quite tough. Villa just kept going, kept to the plan, kept to the structure and they knew the space would open up in the second-half.

Really, the last 30 minutes was a bit of a breeze for Villa and who would have thought that - in their first return [to this level of European competition] in 40 years - the fact they have got three wins out of three and they haven't really got into fifth gear yet. The Bayern Munich game was a big performance but there is still a lot more to go in that team and that is what is so exciting.

The best players don't win the CL, the best team does. Emery is a hugely impressive manager who's moulded a great team filled with good players performing well. Things change, but right now they've got to be seen as serious contenders.

    Rob (not a Villa fan)

Well, we are happy to say that the latest data backs you up Rob. According to Football Meets Data, external, Aston Villa now have a 63% chance of finishing in the top eight, which would assure progress into the last-16 of the Champions League, and a 99.5% chance of finishing in the top 24, which guarantees a place in the knockout play-offs.

If you knew the amount of detail, hours that Unai Emery puts in every single game. For instance video analysis and meetings with the players - one hour and a half that lasts and it happens three times a week. The video that he puts in, that's eight hours of his own time and it goes on and on and on and everybody gets better because every detail he sees wrong he corrects.

That's what makes Aston Villa what it is now - in Europe and the domestic league as well.

Morgan Rogers' pass map also shows the former Middlesbrough player rarely gave away the ball, and while he failed to get on the scoresheet always carried a goal threat, hitting the target with two of his four shots against Bologna.

The England Under-21s midfielder has two goals and two assists in the Premier League this season, as well as one assist in his three appearances in Europe's top-tier competition.

  18. Rogers 'another piece of really shrewd recruitment'published at 08:58 British Summer Time

    Matthew Upson
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast

It's another piece of really shrewd recruitment (Morgan Rogers' signing). They are seeing a fit for a player, bringing them in - it doesn't matter what club they are at because if they fit the bill and the manager believes he can develop them then they've got a chance.

He's a young player in that attacking midfield area and being creative. There is so much talent. You look at [Ross] Barkley and [Boubacar] Kamara coming off the bench and the changes he is able to make like this once they get comfortable - it is really good use of the squad.

He's a manager that has such vast experience in these European competitions and he knows how to handle it and how to get the best out of players like Rogers - when to have them in the team, when to leave them out and I think he's using all that experience really well at the moment.

We are going to be looking at a mixed night for Arsenal next.

The Gunners bounced back from Saturday's Premier League defeat at Bournemouth with a decent if not spectacular performance in a 1-0 win at home to Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk.

But Mikel Arteta, who was already missing Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Jurrien Timber through injury, was given further cause for concern after defender Riccardo Calafiori was forced off with a knee problem.

We will get all the reaction next, after a quick look back at some of the key individual performances from Aston Villa's win over Bologna.
