1. Uefa wants only captains to speak to refs at Eurospublished at 14:09 British Summer Time 14 May

Uefa has told teams at Euro 2024 that only captains will be allowed to approach referees to speak about decisions taken during games and other players doing so risk being booked.

The move by European football's governing body is to try to stop groups of players "mobbing" referees in scenes which are "bad for the image of football".

"In a bid to improve the status quo we at Uefa want referees to explain more of their decisions to all teams competing at the upcoming Uefa Euro 2024 tournament," said Roberto Rosetti, Uefa's managing director of refereeing.

"How will we do this? The idea is simple: we ask that all teams ensure their captain is the only player who speaks to the referee.

"We ask the captains to ensure their team-mates do not encroach upon and surround the referee, allowing direct conversations to take place in order that the decision be relayed in a timely and respectful manner."

  2. Everton ownership 'not for Premier League to decide'published at 14:05 British Summer Time 14 May

The future ownership of Everton will be decided by current owner Farhad Moshiri and not by the Premier League, says the English top flight's chief executive Richard Masters.

777 Partners agreed to buy Moshiri's 94% stake in September but there is increasing uncertainty over the takeover amid concerning developments around the Miami-based firm.

Appearing in front of a select committee on Parliament's Football Governance Bill on Tuesday, Masters was asked why he had not rejected 777's takeover.

“The Premier League’s role in this, as regulator, is to perform the test," said Masters.

"It is not to decide who the current owner wants to sell his club to. That is his decision. At the moment, he wants to continue to have discussions with 777 about it."

Last week, 777 engaged finance restructuring experts, casting further doubts over its ability to complete the deal.

Moshiri has held talks with 777 as he looks for clarity regarding the situation, and whether it has the cash available to pay off a £158m loan owed to MSP Sports Capital.

And eight months on from agreeing to buy the club, 777 continues to undergo scrutiny from the Premier League as to whether it passes the Owners' and Directors' Test.

Last week, Everton's Fan Advisory Board called for the Premier League to dismiss 777 Partners' takeover bid and to "allow discussions with more suitable owners" to take place.

There’s the tense, hot-tempered title race yes, but the most exciting season surely has been at Stamford Bridge. Such a volatile and up and coming team that are finding their feet. They just need more of a spine: plus, I really hope Poch stays as they’ve shown that they’re no pushovers against City and Arsenal. The 4-4 was the game of the season for me!

  4. 'We are stuck in the song, like Coldplay, stuck in reverse'published at 13:50 British Summer Time 14 May

Brighton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:45 BST)

    Chelsea

We will finish with Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino on a point the Argentine made about the fixation on the age and lack of experience in his squad, using the Coldplay song 'Fix You' as an analogy: "We are punished because of the first 10 games. If you start to count after our 10th game I think we are in the top four. That is the problem because you are punished because of the first 10 games.

"I want to be positive and I don't want to talk anymore [about the age and lack of experience in the squad]. From next season I don't want to say that we are young, I want to talk about a different issue.

"I hope we can talk about the evolution of a different aspect of the game, in a tactical way, to evolve and be positive. Because now it is like we are stuck in the song, like Coldplay, stuck in reverse. Always stuck and going back."

Pochettino's inquisitor admitted he did not get the Coldplay reference as he was not a fan.

"I am a fan," replied Pochettino. "Fix You. The song is Fix You."

We checked the statement made by Pochettino about league position and he is not far out. If the season started after 10 games, Chelsea would be fifth. Sunday's opponents Bournemouth would be sixth.

United have had a lot of injury-prone players over the last decade or so. Kicking off with "Sick Note" Saha, we end with Martial and Varane.

I hate to break it to you, Mike, but Louis Saha left Manchester United 16 years ago. A tad more than a decade. Makes me feel old, too...

  6. 'De Zerbi will get what he deserves'published at 13:38 British Summer Time 14 May

Brighton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:45 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino on why Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi will "get what he deserves", he said: "I really enjoy every time we meet and play. I really like the way he approaches the game.

"At Brighton he is doing fantastic. You can see the last few seasons in the way they are playing and achieving things that he is a fantastic coach.

"For sure, when the moment arrives and he has the possibility to be in a different position for sure he will get what he deserves.

"Brighton is doing fantastic also. With the potential of Brighton because they are doing fantastic things. Really enjoy and it is going to be nice to see him because we have a really good relationship."

Varane was never going to work out, his history at Madrid should have sounded alarm bells. 15 separate injuries over nine seasons, missing 99 games. Just another signing that highlights the poor transfer policy in recent years - Madrid were the winners in that deal.

  8. 'To build a new project you need patience and time'published at 13:29 British Summer Time 14 May

Brighton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:45 BST)

    Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino on his first season as Chelsea manager: "I really enjoy it. We are much better now, with the coaching staff. When you win games you enjoy more. When you have the problems that we have had this season, the proof is if you have the capacity to deal with this and these circumstances.

"Over the whole season I have kept my mood, always smiling, always positive, even when the team had 14 players out because of injuries. It is hard to be positive in this situation, that is natural.

"To keep this balance is a good thing - because of experience and capacity, we really believe in ourselves and the way we need to behave.

"It has been a very difficult season for everyone. To build a new project is always a tough situation - you need patience and time."

Brighton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:45 BST)

    Chelsea

More from Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino: "I think we need to finish the season. To finish in a positive way, is important. To prepare for the next season, if we are able to finish well and get into Europe, for sure we can start the next season with hope to be in a better position than we were in this season."

Brighton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:45 BST)

    Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino on whether he is planning for a future at Chelsea: "We are planning, we are working. Some comments from my side have been put in a negative way. Always I try to be positive and I try to translate my feelings - to you and to the people.

"But I never said I am not thinking of the future. We are thinking of the future - it is already planned.

"The plan is there to start the pre-season - the date we are going to start - and then it is not in my hands to be here or not to be here."

That is the question, Mauricio, that is the question...

  13. 'We want to think too much about the history of Chelsea'published at 13:10 British Summer Time 14 May

Brighton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:45 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino on whether qualifying for Europe should define the season: "People are talking a lot in this season. People are talking about many things. If you asked me about all the things that have happened over the last 10 months, then I think to get into Europe would be very good for us.

"But are we going to judge people because of the results or are we going to judge people because of the process put in place and all of the circumstances that we have had [to deal with]? That is a difficult thing to judge.

"I do not want to be repetitive but I think that is too much the history of Chelsea - even if we win the next two games it is not going to be a successful season. We want too much to [think about] the history of Chelsea. But for me it can be a very good season."

  14. 'To be in Europe would be amazing for us'published at 13:06 British Summer Time 14 May

Brighton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:45 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino on trying to secure European qualification: "It is important to keep a strong mentality and really believe that we can get [into Europe].

"It is true that it is going to be two really tough games because tomorrow against Brighton is a really good team and they are going to be really tough to play against, and then [we have] Bournemouth at home [on the final day].

"The most important thing is to believe. The team is doing well, in the second part of the season - in the last 26 or 27 games - I think we are doing really well.

"We need to keep in this way, always trying to give our best, to compete and keep improving. If we can compete well in the last two games then we have the possibility to get into Europe, which would be amazing for us."

On the subject of Chelsea vs Brighton can we take a moment to praise Adam Lallana now he's announced he's leaving? Fantastic technique, great dribbler with a sublime swerve, tactically astute, always helping the younger players, and works his socks off. Must be a manager's dream. Whatever he does next let's hope he stays in the game after he hangs his boots up, he's got the makings of an excellent coach. Good luck Adam, thanks for everything.

Brighton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:45 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino started with some team news: "I think it was very good news last game to have many players back on track. I think Chilly [Ben Chilwell] is really close, but I think not 100% to be part of the squad. Carney Chukwuemeka I think also. For both we need to assess if they will be part of the squad for tomorrow, but if not tomorrow then the weekend."

They have just four players out injured as Ben Chilwell and Carney Chukwuemeka have returned to team training.

Stuart, London: RE Matt 11:49 BST - like Doris Day, I say 'que sera sera'. The decade has been a blast for Manchester City. It won't last. Footy is cyclical. A lot of nonsense is talked about dominance. People have got short memories. Manchester United won 12 Premier League titles before we won one and no-one yelled "Bundesliga!". I'd like the historic fourth on the bounce, but thereafter I expect other teams to shine.

Mauricio Pochettino will be speaking the media shortly ahead of Chelsea's match with Brighton. The Chelsea boss has had to face lots of questions about his future in recent weeks but the Blues are on an excellent run of form.

Chelsea are unbeaten in four matches and have won four games in a row.

They've had injury problems all season but were able to welcome back captain Reece James who had an immediate impact with an assist for Nicolas Jackson who scored the winning goal.

Christopher Nkunku is working back to full fitness and Pochettino has more options in his squad.

It will be interesting to hear what he has to say about the end of the season as Chelsea look to secure European football, which at one time looked unlikely.

That's it from Erik ten Hag but there is no time to stop and dwell on what the Manchester United boss has had to say (not yet at least), it's a busy day of news conferences and the next one is imminent.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino will be addressing the media any moment now ahead of the Blues' trip to Brighton tomorrow.
