Trevoh Chalobah is often overlooked at Chelsea. So much so that he has been made available for transfer in the past three windows.

However, he slotted in seamlessly on his return to Stamford Bridge after a five-month loan spell at Crystal Palace which was cut short just last week.

During the 3-1 win over Wolves, chants for Chalobah were more common than any other from the Chelsea support.

They began from the Matthew Harding End but spread to the entire stadium after his header from a corner was turned in from close range by Noni Madueke.

Madueke admitted to apologising for poaching the goal-bound header, but added: "You have to understand, this is what they pay me for."

When Blues boss Enzo Maresca was asked about Chalobah, he said: "He was very good. We were sure he was going to help us and tonight he showed us he can do it.

"He is a strong defender and quick. He can defend in behind, forward - he is aggressive. But we already knew that and that's why we called him back."

Chalobah was equally excellent on loan at Palace, who seemed disappointed to lose him. He built a solid back-three partnership with Marc Guehi and Maxence Lacroix at Selhurst Park during his 14 appearances, and he also scored three goals.

New England boss Thomas Tuchel may also be taking note of the low-key consistency of a player he gave a debut to at Stamford Bridge.

Chalobah's consistency extends into last season, when he again went from exile to partnering Thiago Silva to a five-game winning run at the end of the campaign under Mauricio Pochettino.

I was led to believe Richard Hughes was a great acquisition for Liverpool, but with three contracts still not renewed and no signings to invigorate the squad, I'm questioning what we are paying him for. With Van Dijk running down his contract, Konate excellent but fragile, Gomez injured, Quansah lacking confidence, why were Liverpool not in the running for a young centre-back seen as an emerging Ruben Dias? Mr Hughes sleeping on the job again...

  4. Where will Reis fit in Man City squad?published at 11:56 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Manchester City's latest signing Vitor Reis is a right-footed centre back who can also play at right-back.

Manchester City have been hampered with injury problems this season, particularly in defence.

John Stones has been out with a foot injury since their game against Aston Villa in December.

Ruben Dias returned to the side for Sunday's 6-0 win over Ipswich but Nathan Ake was absent.

There could also be a vacancy at right-back, following Kyle Walker's struggles with form and subsequent revelation that he was interested in a move away from the club.

Rico Lewis, Matheus Nunes and Akanji have been used in that position this season, but Pep Guardiola could well be on the lookout for a long-term replacement.

  5. No Stones or Ake at City trainingpublished at 11:54 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

PSG v Man City (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

Pep Guardiola has a smile on his face as his team are put through their paces in the warm-up before going into rondos.

It is a fairly small group out there and there is no sign of John Stones, who has been out since December, or Nathan Ake, who missed the game at Ipswich on Sunday.

With such issues in defence, it seems Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov have arrived at just the right time - although, again, they are not eligible to feature against Paris St-Germain tomorrow.

PSG v Man City (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

Manchester City are out for their open training session ahead of a crunch Champions League fixture at Paris St-Germain.

It's all pretty relaxed at the moment with Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Erling Haaland among those playing a bit of keepy up.

New signings Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov are out there as well, although neither is eligible to play in Paris tomorrow night.

Palmeiras' under-20 coach Lucas Andrade told BBC Sport he hopes Vitor Reis follows the same path as Manchester City and Portugal centre-back Ruben Dias.

"Mentally, Vitor is a very stable player. For most of his time in youth football, he was captain, and in the professional team, he took on a leading role in a very short time," Andrade said.

"I think the comparison with Ruben Dias is inevitable here, given the characteristics, the type of player, and also the abilities. We hope he follows the same path."

Guy from Nottingham: I agree with Simon the Spurs fan (first time agreeing with a Spurs fan as I'm a Gooner). But why are Arsenal so slow in the transfer market? Wissa is a better striker than Havertz, why are we not going for him?

  11. Man City’s Champions League focuspublished at 11:27 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

PSG v Man City (Wed, 20:00 GMT)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester City are on a spending spree this week as they look to reshape Pep Guardiola’s squad for the second half of the season.

However, neither Vitor Reis nor Abdukodir Khusanov can be registered for the final two Champions League first phase games, so Guardiola must rely on his existing squad to get City into the knockout play-offs.

City go to Paris St-Germain in 22nd spot, a point clear of the French club, who are 25th.

The clubs between ninth and 24th go into the play-offs. As it stands, if City qualify for the first knockout round, they would face Atletico Madrid or AC Milan to reach the last 16.

City are due to start training shortly.

  12. Reis second of a Man City hat-trick?published at 11:21 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Teenaged Brazilian defender Vitor Reis is the second Manchester City signing in January, with one more expected before the end of the transfer window.

The 19-year-old joins from Palmeiras for £29.6m and follows 20-year-old Uzbekistan centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov, who completed a £33.6m move from Lens on Monday.

City, whose Premier League title defence has been undermined by injury problems, also hope to complete a deal for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush before the window closes.

New Manchester City defender Vitor Reis says the move will be the biggest challenge of his life but when the door knocked and it was Manchester City, there "wasn't anywhere else to go".

He said: “This is a dream come true, since I was a young kid I’ve always dreamt with an opportunity just like this one and to play for a club as big as City.

"The achievement isn’t just my own but also my family’s too and everyone that has helped me get here. It is an amazing achievement, and I’ll work very hard to make it a very happy one.“The magnitude of Manchester City, its history and its structure - when the door knocked and it was Manchester City, I knew there wasn’t anywhere else to go.“I believe it will be the biggest challenge of my life, but any player who wishes to play in elite football has to come here and play football here.

"I believe I might have some challenges with adjusting to the weather and some physical challenges associated to that.”

Vitor Reis has emerged on the scene as one of Brazil’s most promising young defenders.

The 19-year-old centre-back is a Palmeiras youth product and made his senior debut for the club in June 2024. He went on to play a key part of the team who finished runners-up in the Brazilian Serie A.

He was named in the Trofeu Mesa Redonda Team of the Year for all Brazilian football across 2024.

The previous year he captained Brazil at the 2023 Fifa Under-17 World Cup.

Reis has reportedly been on the radar of Real Madrid, Arsenal and Brighton.

Wissa for £22m?? An absolute bargain if even remotely true. Sort of reminds me of the Trossard transfer [from Brighton to Arsenal], who was a steal at £25m. Teams should be tripping over themselves going for Wissa and or Mbuemo. Absolute assets.

    Mo, a Liverpool fan

I can imagine Forest's Wissa bid was low in a bit of tit-for-tat in view of Brentford's previous silly low bid for Brennan Johnson.

Wolves manager Vitor Pereira, as well as criticising Matheus Cunha for his body language and decision to leave the field straight after Monday's defeat at Chelsea, also referenced the transfer speculation around him.

He said: "If we start complaining about this and that, this is not the way. He is committed to Wolves but when you keep hearing about other clubs, then it is human [to be distracted].

"But he needs to put his mind on his targets and increase his level after injury and help his team again with his quality. The team needs him with good energy and not with frustration. He must slow down and put his mind in the right way."

  19. Cunha is keypublished at 10:51 Greenwich Mean Time 21 January

Wolves star Matheus Cunha has been in the spotlight amid transfer speculation.

There is no doubt he would be key to Wolves' survival hopes

He has featured in all but one of Wolves' Premier League games this season, scoring 10 goals and contributing with four assists.

Last season - his first full season at Molineux - he finished as the club's top scorer.

Transfermarkt value him at: 50m euros, external (£42.2m)

In December, it was reported that Arsenal began talks over a move for Cunha and at the beginning of the month Sky Sports said that he was 'considering his options'.
