  5. 'I don't like to do that to my players'published at 23:01 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    FT: Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim speaking to BBC:

On the early change: "That is really simple when the game starts and finishes for people to address. The idea was different. It was a real tough moment for Josh [Zirkzee] and I felt that I had to do something in that moment. I don't like to do that to my players. In that moment the team was suffering and I made the decision thinking of the team. I am really sorry for Josh."

"You can feel it [low confidence] every single day which is a bad thing but it is also a good thing because they are feeling. It is hard for them to cope with the losses on the pitch but we have to continue. There is no other way.

On Marcus Rashford: "Every player on the bench is close to going on the pitch."

I posted earlier today saying United fans should keep the faith, and nothing has changed. Yes, Amorim was wrong to pair Casemiro & Eriksen in midfield tonight, but I’ve more confidence since he joined than when ETH was at Utd. We have more possession, give up less chances, have better chances, these stats are verifiable. Plus he’s jumped onto the train mid-crash - he’ll need time to work with the squad. And better players.

  7. 'I think that [a relegation battle] is a possibility'published at 22:58 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    FT: Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim speaking to BBC: "It is really hard. It is one of the worst moments in the history of our club, and we have to accept that. Another loss in front of our own supporters.

"In this moment it is really tough to turn around results because we don't have a lot of time to train the base of the way we want to play. In the bad situations you need that base to hold on to. In the second half they really tried, it was more like the value of the team. "We were close to scoring once but they were better.

"Yes we are [too easy to score against] but also in some moments we had some chances to score and didn't and that also makes a difference."

On whether this season may be a battle to avoid the drop: "I think that it is a possibility and we have to be clear with our fans. We have to change something but this season will be really hard on everybody. It can make us stronger and we have to fight."

  8. 'One of the more difficult moments in the history of Manchester United'published at 22:57 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    FT: Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim speaking to Sky Sports on whether his club are in a relegation battle: "That is really clear and we have to fight. It is a really difficult moment, one of the more difficult moments in the history of Manchester United and we have to address it with honesty and to be clear with that, we have to fight next game."

On whether he will change anything: "I change something tactical in every game. You focus on the three defenders, you can focus on that. I change for every game and you can see it. If I did not believe I would change because I am not stubborn. I believe in something and I really stick on that."

He speaks well and I think he'll be a good Premier League coach one day, but Amorim was never going to be the experienced head needed to sort the current rot occurring at Utd. He must be equally regretting leaving Sporting!

    Jack

Once again, all the comments about how bad Man Utd are, but Newcastle did a job on them - they knew exactly what they were doing and it was men against boys. Up the Mags!

Tonight was not a good night at all.

Tonight was a reflection on the players, I think it is probably deeply ingrained in the players, the standards have dropped for a long time now.

    That was evident tonight.

It is going to take a long time for Ruben Amorim to lift things up.

The spotlight is on him and he is taking it but as players, no matter who your manager is, you can't play like you did tonight.

It's a matter of personal pride and that first half was terrible, I was actually shocked that Newcastle only went in 2-0 up.

  11. 'Confidence is the ultimate thing that makes the difference'published at 22:53 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    FT: Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe speaking to BBC: "We know this has been an unkind fixture to us for a long, long time. To almost break new ground here and win in the manner that we did is really pleasing.

"Early in the season we were on the other end of it by conceding early goals and it makes such a difference [reversing it]. We gave ourselves mountains to climb at times, particularly on the road, and it is great to reverse it the last few games. Those goals have helped with momentum and confidence and from that point we have never looked back.

"[Alexander Isak] has been really, really good. His all round game is really strong. He can do a bit of everything. Most importantly he needs to be in the right place at the right time to score goals. Early in the match it was a great cross from Lewis Hall and Alex was there with the header.

"Really pleased for Martin and the back line, the whole team really, for the clean sheet. Historically we have prided ourselves on being strong defensively and it is great to see us returning to that.

"Confidence is the ultimate thing that makes the difference. The players are playing in their best positions and look happy and comfortable and our injury record has also improved from last year."

  12. Amorim's embarrassmentpublished at 22:52 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter at Old Trafford

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has come into his press conference and says it is 'embarrassing' to be at the club and be talking about relegation.

He is talking about how he will not change his system.

  13. 'I want to be a threat in every part of the game'published at 22:51 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    FT: Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

More from Newcastle forward Alexander Isak speaking to Sky Sports: "I have had a good year and I am really happy with how things are going for me and for the team in the last weeks too. I just have to keep going into the new year doing the same.

"The whole team are very ambitious. We played Champions League last year and it is in our mind to get back there. It is a long way to go until the end of the season so I don't think we should be looking too much at the table. The ambition of the team is of course to get in Europe again. We just need to take one game at a time.

"There are many great strikers out there. I try to watch football and take different things from many players. I want to be more mobile in my game, for example today scoring headers, I have scored some more this season which is not my game, but I want to be a threat in every part of the game."

  14. 'The challenge is to match our intensity at home and away'published at 22:50 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    FT: Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

    Newcastle United

Newcastle forward Alexander Isak speaking to Sky Sports: "We haven't won here in a long time and it was a very good performance from us. A great way to end the year.

"Our intensity was really good. We started off the game with high energy, high regains and counter attacks. The challenge was to have the same intensity here as we play with at home, and we did that in the first half. It paid off with the two goals and we could have scored more.

"We have been much better lately playing away from home. The challenge is to match the intensity home and away, and we have done that in recent weeks. We have been consistent in our performances which is good to see.

"[Playing against a three man defence] is all about trying to be in a good position. I got a goal early and it led to me being marked a bit more for the rest of the game, but that probably opened up the second goal for Joelinton when they were more focused on me."

  15. Man United's upcoming fixturespublished at 22:49 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    FT: Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

2024 hasn't been too kind to Manchester United and the start to 2025 looks a difficult one.

The next six look like this for Ruben Amorim's side:

    • Liverpool (a)
    • Arsenal (a) - FA Cup
    • Southampton (h)
    • Brighton (h)
    • Rangers (h) - Europa League
    • Fulham (a)

It's a bleak mid-winter for Manchester United, and the stats do the talking...

    • United have lost three consecutive league matches at home for the first time since December 1978 to February 1979.
    • It is the first time they have lost three league games in a row without scoring since May 2015.
    • That's five league defeats in the same month for the first time since September 1962.
    • They are finishing a calendar year lower than seventh in the table for the first time since 1989, when they were 15th.
    • Their tally of 22 points after 19 matches means United set a new club record for the lowest points at the halfway stage of a Premier League season, beating their previous mark of 28 in 2019-20.
  17. 'United job far bigger than Amorim could have imagined'published at 22:47 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    FT: Man Utd 0-2 Newcastle

    Gary Neville
Former Manchester United defender on Sky Sports

Worrying times for Manchester United and Ruben Amorim. He came in as a young manager and knew it was going to be a big job, but it is far bigger than he could have ever imagined.

  18. 'I think we deserved much more'published at 22:45 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    FT: Aston Villa 2-2 Brighton

    Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think we deserved much more. We were the better team. We dominated 20/25 minutes of the game and then we conceded a goal. It doesn't make sense for me. We struggled a little bit but I think we deserved to win.

"How we concede the goals is two set pieces It's too easy. We defended quite well and we weren't mature enough sometimes. It's disappointing.

On Lamptey: "He trains very well and has good performances when he plays. he trains really hard and he's a great team player. It's more important how he defends and he was brilliant.

"We have no win for seven games, it's a disappointing period for us. We are ambitious and we should be much more mature to get the points. We have a young crew and we have to keep working and changing."

  19. Wasteful Brightonpublished at 22:44 Greenwich Mean Time 30 December 2024

    FT: Aston Villa 2-2 Brighton

No wonder Fabian Hurzeler is frustrated!

Only Fulham (19) have dropped more points from winning positions in the Premier League this season than Brighton (18).
