There were a few occasions; Brentford, Fulham and Wolves spring to mind, earlier in the season where Manchester City managed victories in games they could easily have lost.

That suggested all was not quite right in Pep Guardiola's world.

But no-one expected the implosion that began with an EFL Cup defeat at Tottenham on 30 October and lasted the whole of November.

We are now onto six defeats and a draw (which felt like a defeat) from seven games. City have dropped out of the top four and if they lose against Nottingham Forest tomorrow and Manchester United won at Arsenal, Ruben Amorim's side would be a point behind them, which is incredible.

Guardiola is due to speak to the media shortly.

Speaking on the latest episode of BBC Radio Leicester's When You're Smiling podcast, The Athletic's Rob Tanner touched on how Ruud van Nistelrooy will be keen to shift mentality within the Leicester squad: "Normally you expect managers to be very guarded to how their teams will set up because there’s an advantage for their opposition, but it he was refreshing and honest. I think he will be like that in his pre and post-match conferences.

"I got the sense under [Steve] Cooper that there was a bit of an inferiority complex, thinking that they wouldn’t win. I think Ruud will go in and tell them, look if we get a plan right we can cause this team some trouble. I think he’s going to try and instil a winning attitude, that it’s not about performance. Ultimately, it’s about trying to survive and retain their Premier League status.

"I think he will work to get this team conceding less chances. I think the amount of chances this side concede is huge."

  6. Two Premier League fixtures this eveningpublished at 12:19 GMT 3 December 2024

There is plenty of midweek Premier League action to keep you occupied this week and it starts this evening with two huge matches down the foot of the table.

Ipswich Town (19th) take on Crystal Palace (17th) at Portman Road with both sides sat on nine points and just one win apiece.

Elsewhere Ruud van Nistelrooy takes charge of his first game as manager of Leicester City (16th) as they welcome West Ham United (14th) to the King Power Stadium.

Morsy not wearing the armband because of his beliefs is not an excuse unfortunately. Homophobia in football is incredibly prevalent and your sexuality is a human right. It is only correct that these role models, especially as captains, demonstrate and model correct behaviours to the younger generations watching to influence them positively before they are corrupted. Not wearing the armband communicates that there is something wrong with being a member of the LGBT+ community.

Will Pep Guardiola be asked about his gesture to the Liverpool fans after Manchester City's defeat at Anfield on Sunday?

He held up six fingers to indicate the amount of Premier League titles he has won, following chants that he would be "sacked in the morning".

  10. 'I liked the way that Guardiola acted after the game'published at 11:59 GMT 3 December 2024

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club

On Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola as his side trail leaders Liverpool by 11 points after Sunday's 2-0 defeat.

It's been a very bad month, hasn't it? I actually quite liked the way that he acted after the game just because what was the alternative? They got absolutely hammered by Liverpool - the scoreline flattered Manchester City.

The alternative was to sort of just quickly gesture at the fans and walk down the tunnel and I suppose people would have looked at that like he's given up, so it was actually a bit of a show of defiance. I thought the supporters love all that sort of thing. I think that the players would have quite liked that and it showed he's got a bit of fire in his belly, a bit of fight.

I totally support the decision to not wear the armband "due to religious beliefs!" The whole rainbow laces movement is to increase diversity and acceptance of everyone's feelings. That diversity and acceptance also has to include people whose religious beliefs are against LGBTQ+

  12. 'We are ahead of my expectations'published at 11:49 GMT 3 December 2024

Southampton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:30 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on whether it has surprised him how well things have gone so far: "I still consider it a big job but just because it's a big job doesn't mean you aren't thinking to do the right things.

"In terms of expectation, we are ahead of my expectations in the way we are playing and the results. It's been a very short time together but the best thing is that there are many things we can do better and we are going in the right direction."

  13. 'You have to make decisions for here, now and the future'published at 11:43 GMT 3 December 2024

Newcastle United v Liverpool (Wed, 19:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe on refreshing the squad and January transfer window: "There is a desire from everyone to deliver that.

"Then you have to go to the realities of what is possible. You have to make decisions for here, now and the future.

"I don't want to put ourselves in positions where summer becomes difficult and beyond.

"There needs to be a certain element of trading in and out to keep groups new.

"The same squad can produce staleness and not as good a product. But it is about what we can and what we are able to do."

  14. Maresca keeps playing down title talk but predicts future dominationpublished at 11:38 GMT 3 December 2024

Southampton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:30 GMT)

    Nizaar Kinsella
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Enzo Maresca once again denied Chelsea can win the Premier League title this season - but says the club can dominate English football within the next four or five years.

Chelsea are third in the Premier League but level on points and goal difference with second-placed Arsenal.

The Blues have spent over £1.5 billion on players since Boehly and Clearlake Capital bought the club from Roman Abramovich and have begun to click, producing arguably the most dominant and impressive win of the season on Sunday at home to Aston Villa.

But this squad, according to Maresca, which is one of youngest in the league at just over 23 years old, lacks the experience to win the league having finished 12th and sixth in the last two seasons.

Yet that's not to say that Maresca doesn't think Chelsea can "dominate" in the coming years.

He said: "I said to the owners, because of the age and how good the squad is, for me Chelsea will be one of the teams or the team that dominates English football - this is what I said to the club when I met them."

The title chat for this season is unlikely to go away anytime soon with Chelsea facing a trip to Southampton to begin a run of fixtures they are expected to win.

  15. 'I am still replaying that last couple of minutes in my head'published at 11:33 GMT 3 December 2024

Newcastle v Liverpool (Wed, 19:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe on concerns over goalscoring form: "It would be beneficial to play with a centre forward in the team and we have had that issue before this season.

"Isak's injury disrupted our rhythm, but we had other issues as well. You make tweaks and hope it works.

"Goalscoring has not historically been a problem with my team, usually the other way."

On their 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace: "I am still replaying that last couple of minutes in my head and the little things that we got wrong in that goal and didn’t get the win for us."

"There will be no change in approach but sometimes these things just happen and go in phases."

  16. 'Van Nistelrooy called me before he took over at Leicester'published at 11:29 GMT 3 December 2024

Southampton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:30 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on speaking to Ruud van Nistelrooy before he took the Leicester City job and what he said: "Ruud is a friend of mine. He called me days ago before he took over there.

"We had the conversation and I told him that Leicester are a fantastic club with fantastic people and in the end he decided to go - this was our conversation."

  17. Newcastle's strengths are 'unique'published at 11:25 GMT 3 December 2024

Newcastle United v Liverpool (Wed, 19:30 GMT)

    Newcastle United

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe on Liverpool: "What a week they have had, they are a team playing with full confidence at the moment.

"There is an excitement about the game and to attack a game like this will be brilliant.

"We have to bring our strengths and our strengths are unique to us.

"We just have to give the players confidence, we have some outstanding attacking players, we need to give them license to do that and get their confidence back."

  18. 'It is the toughest game since we started the season'published at 11:20 GMT 3 December 2024

Southampton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:30 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on Wednesday's opponents Southampton: "It is the worst game since we started the season for us and will be the toughest game since we started the season and we need to be ready or it will be a bad day for us.

"If you analyse the results, they are there but in terms of performance they were winning against Liverpool, they lost against Man City 1-0 and they drew against Brighton. I know them quite well and it is very clear what they want. It will be a tough, tough game and we need to be ready."

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca when asked whether he maintains the view that his side are not in the title race: "Absolutely. Arsenal have been there in the last two years close to Man City and we have been very far from City.

"To be in the title race is a nice pressure for me and the players - we like that pressure - but it is not our case because Arsenal in the last two years they have been there with Liverpool and City and we were not there. Hopefully soon, we can be there."

  20. Fofana and James 'out for the next weeks'published at 11:13 GMT 3 December 2024

Southampton v Chelsea (Wed, 19:30 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca on the fitness of Wesley Fofana and Reece James: "We don't have any update at the moment on Fofana, hopefully we can get some more news in the next days but for sure he will be out for the next weeks for sure. James is getting better but he still needs weeks to come back."

More on losing Fofana to injury: "Benoit [Badiashile] could be one of the solutions but we have Axel [Disasi] and different players that can play there. It's a big loss because Wes was doing fantastic every game but we need to find different solutions."
