Germany captain Alexandra Popp has announced she will retire from international football next month.

The 33-year-old Wolfsburg striker made her Germany debut in 2010 and has scored 67 goals for her country.

The German Football Association said she will win her 145th and final cap against Australia in Duisburg on 28 October - three days after they play England at Wembley.

"I have always stressed that my gut will make the decision, and now it has," Popp said on Monday.

"After long, tearful deliberations, I have decided with a heavy heart to end my career with the national team.

"The fire that ignited in me 18 years ago and grew stronger from year to year has now almost burned out."

Phil McNulty Q&A: 'Since Sir Alex Ferguson left the recruitment of players has been abysmal'published at 15:16 British Summer Time 30 September

Alan, Italy: Hi Phil, Simon makes a good point - "The common denominator is not the coaches." What do you think is the common denominator for Man U's continuing demise?

    Phil: Hello, Alan.

Lots of the wiser people in football talk about the three most important things: “Recruitment. Recruitment. And recruitment.”

Since Sir Alex Ferguson left the recruitment of players has been abysmal under pretty much every manager and the choices of managers have been questionable.

Recruitment, however, is key and if you’re not recruiting the right quality or character of players you end up with an average side. So here Manchester United are.

  5. 'Very important game for us' - Iraolapublished at 15:13 British Summer Time 30 September

Bournemouth v Southampton (Mon, 20:00 BST)

    Bournemouth

Three strikes and you're out for Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola, who said he is "disappointed" to be serving a touchline ban for the game against Southampton. "We cannot change it," added the Spaniard.

"They told me that with yellow cards, you cannot appeal them. That is something that doesn't happen in Spain. Over there you can do it."

The Cherries are 13th in the table, level on five points with West Ham, with one win, two draws and two defeats in their opening five games of the season.

As for his first taste of a south coast derby tonight, Iraola said: "I'm sure this is a game our supporters want to win, and their supporters probably feel the same way. It is a derby - a game that everybody always wants to win. Considering the standings, I think it's a very important game for us."

The promoted teams are yet to find the winning formula on the their return to the Premier League, with Leicester City and Ipswich Town on the end of a weekend defeat and draw respectively. So can Southampton, who stuck in the relegation zone with a single point to their name, step up and claim a vital away win? If they do, it will all be down to the "psychological game", which Russell Martin says "is the most important bit".

The Saints boss added: "I'm learning more all the time about the group and we're learning more about what's required at this level.

"I hope, in the five games we've had, they have enough to know that to feel fear of the Premier League, certain players and teams is completely natural - but you have to embrace it and really seize the opportunity we have. I feel more and more that they are doing that and the results will follow."

  7. No injury concerns for Iraola; Smallbone & Sulemana missing for Saintspublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 30 September

Bournemouth have no new injury concerns for the visit of Southampton, though head coach Andoni Iraola serves a one-game touchline ban after accumulating three yellow cards.

Midfielder Tyler Adams is the only player Iraola has ruled out of Monday's fixture, although the Spaniard said on Friday that team news is "difficult" to assess with three days to go until the game takes place.

Will Smallbone and Kamaldeen Sulemana are Southampton's only absentees due to injury but Smallbone could return to face Arsenal next weekend.

Jack Stephens serves the final game of a three-match suspension.

Phil McNulty Q&A: 'Would Southgate be a hard sell for United’s fans? I think he might.published at 15:01 British Summer Time 30 September

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Mike, Tunbridge Wells: Hi Phil. Assuming Ten Hag is sacked at some point - and it’s surely just a matter of time - who would be your suggestion to replace him? Van Nistelrooy would command respect but is unproven; Tuchel was one looked at in the summer & not fancied (or didn’t fancy it); Potter would be a huge risk. Is Southgate the right man (no, imho)? Allegri? You’d presume it would be an out of work manager given how early it is in the season. It’s trying to find the right man so we don’t have another two-year cycle of one step forward, two steps back.

Phil: Hi Mike. I won’t assume Ten Hag will be sacked as he might still turn things around, although I do not see too many signs at the moment.

Manchester United’s hierarchy could not find an alternative to Ten Hag in the summer, which is really why he is still there, so what has changed? Well, Gareth Southgate is now available. Would he be a hard sell for United’s fans? I think he might.

Graham Potter is ready to re-enter the fray but you could say the same about him. Allegri’s style is attritional and may not be suited to United.

I think we must wait and see but there will be tough choices to be made come what may.

  9. Man Utd midfielder Mainoo due to have scanpublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 30 September

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is due to have a scan on the injury that forced him out of yesterday's home defeat by Tottenham.

Mainoo went off at the same time as skipper Bruno Fernandes was getting sent off.

It briefly led to United being down to nine men until Mason Mount was eventually introduced from the substitutes bench.

Manager Erik ten Hag told MUTV Mainoo's injury was 'a concern' after the game, although he did not say what the problem was.

Phil McNulty Q&A: 'United were utterly outclassed'published at 14:55 British Summer Time 30 September

#bbcfootball, via WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

Paul: Hi Phil, I have read your scathing assessment of Man United. I noticed that you didn't acknowledge that the spine of the team, Zirkzee, Ugarte and De Ligt had scant experience of the Premier League and even less of playing together. Wouldn't you consider this a mitigating factor?

Phil: There is an element of that, certainly, Paul, but it was the overall performance that was so troubling for anyone associated with Manchester United.

They were utterly outclassed, over-run and lacked any obvious strategy. They also lacked any sort of discipline. I thought they were a shambles.

Time may prove me wrong but I am not convinced by either Zirkzee or De Ligt. Too early on Ugarte.

Feel free to keep this answer, Paul, and come back to me if I’m wrong!!!

Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtoi will miss Wednesday's Champions League game at Lille with a hip injury.

Real have confirmed the Belgian suffered an abductor injury in his left leg during their 1-1 draw with Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Sunday.

Ukraine international Andriy Lunin is expected to deputise in goal against Lille, while striker Kylian Mbappe has returned to the squad after missing Sunday's match with a thigh injury.

Following the Lille game, the Spanish and European champions then host Villarreal on Saturday before the international break.

Courtois, who missed most of last season with a knee injury, has started all 10 games for Real this season.

We'll find out what the full team news situation is from Pep Guardiola later on, but with Slovan Bratislava being one of the weaker teams in Manchester City's group of fixtures, Guardiola will more than likely use this game as an ideal opportunity to rotate his squad.

During the live stream of City's training session earlier on, we couldn't quite spot midfielder Kevin de Bruyne out on the pitch, although Guardiola is hopeful the Belgium international will return before the next international break.

Erling Haaland suffered a knock to his ankle during the draw with Newcastle at the weekend but the Norway striker was present at training on Monday morning and looked in good spirits.

Manchester City are on the travels this week in the Champions League after being held to a 1-1 draw at St James' Park by Newcastle United in the league on Saturday.

It's another game without the "irreplaceable" Rodri for manager Pep Guardiola, with Slovan Bratislava also being an unknown European opposition for City.

However, after a frustrating goalless draw with Inter Milan in their opening fixture, City have a perfect opportunity to put points on the humongous board, as the Slovakian champions Slovan Bratislava have won just two of their 12 matches against English opposition (D2 L8), losing all of their last five in a row.

If Guardiola needs any more encouragement, then City are unbeaten in each of their last 11 Champions League away matches (W5 D6), winning four of their last five.

The Spaniard will be answering questions ahead of this match at around 18:00 BST.

If you look closely at Arsenal's training session at the top of the page, you'll also be able to spot defender Takehiro Tomiyasu, who has been on the sidelines since suffering a knee injury during pre-season training in July.

The Japan international is yet to feature for the Gunners this season and while his return to the side is being handled with caution, Mikel Arteta said before the Leicester game the 25-year-old was making progress and was in a "good place".

Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber says the current fixture schedule is "dangerous" and is a "big topic" in the dressing room.

The debate about the football calendar drew attention after Manchester City midfielder Rodri said players are close to going on strike due to the congested schedule.

Timber, who missed the majority of last season with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, said he "totally agrees" with Rodri's comments.

The 23-year-old Dutch international added: "It's a big topic at the moment in dressing rooms, not only at City and Liverpool but also our dressing room.

"I didn't play last season, so I'm just enjoying playing right now - you won't hear me complaining - but I totally understand what they're saying."

Asked on Monday if players are more at risk of a serious injury as a result of the schedule, Timber said: "Definitely. I honestly think it's a dangerous thing. Last week we played City and I think they played again two days later - that's too much."

Arsenal’s summer signing Mikel Merino is training ahead of the match against PSG in the Champions League tomorrow.

Merino got injured in his first session for the Gunners and is yet to make his debut.

Riccardo Calafiori is also training. Ben White is not on the pitch and looks to be a huge doubt for tomorrow.

As for how Arsenal may line up against French Ligue 1 champions Paris St-Germain, Mikel Arteta said defenders Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori will be in contention for selection.

White has missed the Gunners' past two matches with a knee injury, while Calafiori landed awkwardly on his left leg in the closing stages of his side's win over Leicester on Saturday.

"Obviously he [Calafiori] was a bit emotional after the game," added Arteta on Monday. "Let's see how he is today."

The Champions League is back this week with the next round of fixtures in the new 36-team league format.

After the opening game, Arsenal are 16th in the gigantic table, joining the likes of Manchester City and Inter Milan on one point, after their goalless home draw with Atalanta.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta says his side are taking on a Paris St-Germain team at the "highest level".

The Gunners face the French champions on Tuesday evening after drawing their Champions League opener away to Atalanta a fortnight ago.

PSG beat Spanish side Girona 1-0 in their first match and have reached the semi-final stage of Europe's premier competition in three of the past five seasons.

"The opposition we are facing tomorrow is probably the highest level you can find in European football," said Arteta, who played for PSG between 2001 and 2002.

"But it is a great opportunity for us to see how we deal with it and how prepared we are and how we can impose ourselves in this kind of context."

  20. Chelsea-Man Utd WSL game postponed at week's noticepublished at 14:18 British Summer Time 30 September

Chelsea's Women's Super League game at home to Manchester United next Sunday has been postponed at a week's notice.

It has been called off because of a conflict with the Blues' European schedule.

The Women’s Champions League draw was made on Friday and Chelsea's group game at home to Real Madrid has been scheduled for just two days after the United game - on Tuesday, 8 October.

Chelsea said that "numerous discussions" have taken place to seek an "amicable solution to this scheduling conflict" but they proved unsuccessful.

A club statement added: "It is therefore with sincere regret that we are left with no other option than to confirm the postponement of next weekend’s WSL fixture.

"We are extremely disappointed with the outcome but wish to reiterate that player welfare and the impact on our supporters are of the utmost importance to us."

A new date for the WSL game, which was scheduled to be broadcast live on Sky Sports, is yet to be confirmed. Ticket refunds will be available up to 48 hours before that date.
