  4. A 24-year high for Romania?published at 16:34 British Summer Time 26 June

    Slovakia v Romania (17.00 BST)

Romania have only qualified once for the last 16 in their five Euro appearances - and that was in 2000 at the expense of England.

As BBC Sport reported it on 23 June 2000, "Phil Neville's ugly late tackle on Viorel Moldovan gave substitute Ioan Ganea the chance to send stand-in keeper Nigel Martyn the wrong way from the penalty spot and break England's hearts in Charleroi."

That sent Romania through second in Group A, but they were beaten 2-0 in the Euro 2000 quarter-finals by eventual runners-up Italy.

Apart from that, Romania have been eliminated in the group stage in their other four appearances at the European Championships - 1984, 1996, 2008 and 2016.

The current crop have the chance to reach heights Romanian football has not experienced for nearly quarter of a century.

  7. 'We deserve this opportunity' - Calzonapublished at 16:29 British Summer Time 26 June

    Slovakia v Romania (17.00 BST)

Slovakia could still qualify as one of the best third-placed teams, even if they do not get a result against Romania.

Head coach Francesco Calzona, like his Romanian counterpart, says his side will be going out with the intention of winning the group at the Frankfurt Arena.

"We are professionals," the Italian said. "We know that the draw might help us to qualify for the last 16, but that doesn't mean anything because we want to play our own match.

"We deserve this opportunity to progress as we have played good football."

  8. 'We want to win the group'published at 16:28 British Summer Time 26 June

    Slovakia v Romania (17.00 BST)

Romania head coach Edward Iordanescu says it is important to beat Slovakia today, to give themselves more of an advantage in the knockout stages.

Iordanescu's side sit top of the group, but it is still all to play for.

"We want to win the group," Iordanescu said. "If we win the group at least theoretically you have a certain advantage, especially in terms of extra rest days and also of the opponents.

"But the most important thing is to qualify, this is what our objective is."

  9. Ukraine hope to continue 'fairytale'published at 16:27 British Summer Time 26 June

    Ukraine v Belgium (17:00 BST)

Ukraine will reach the knockouts for the second consecutive Euros if they beat Belgium.

Should they draw, they would need Group E's other match between Slovakia and Romania not to end level to advance.

Ukraine were stunned by Romania in a 3-0 loss in their first match, but followed that with a 2-1 comeback success against Slovakia.

"We need to get into the same mindset we had at the end of the game against Slovakia," said Ukraine head coach Serhiy Rebrov.

He added if his side were to win it would continue a "fairytale" for his country.

Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

"For the Ukrainians, every game, every event like that means a lot, it means for them that they can come back to the usual pre-war times," said Rebrov.

  10. Belgium 'going out to win'published at 16:26 British Summer Time 26 June

    Ukraine v Belgium

Belgium will be "going out to win" against Ukraine even though a draw will be enough for them to reach the last 16 at Euro 2024, says manager Domenico Tedesco.

Group E has all four teams locked on three points ahead of the final round of fixtures, but as long as Belgium avoid defeat they will stay in one of Group E's top two spots thanks to their positive goal difference.

In theory, Tedesco's side will receive an easier last-16 draw if they top the group, although their manager has warned against looking too far ahead.

"We can't start to calculate or speculate," he said. "We are going out to win the game."

Mykhailo Mudryk is injured for Ukraine which is a huge blow for them. He missed training yesterday I'm told.

He was out on the pitch before the warm-ups with his team-mates so he is here and cheering them on.

There was some confusion because he was listed as one of Ukraine's substitutes on their XI account but the official Uefa match sheet confirms he is not in the squad and will not be involved tonight.

The Ukraine team came out a few minutes ago to warm-up and I cannot see him.

  12. How likely are England to face one of these teams?published at 16:22 British Summer Time 26 June

Data Analysts Nielsen Gracenote have the likelihood of England's last 16 opponents as:

    • 61% Netherlands
    • 16% Slovakia
    • 11% Ukraine
    • 8% Romania
    • 4% Belgium

Who would you prefer England play? Would you back the Three Lions against all, some or any of them?

  13. What is England's interest here?published at 16:21 British Summer Time 26 June

Gareth Southgate and co will be keeping a close eye on proceedings in Group E, as their round of 16 opponents could emerge from here.

England will face the Netherlands or whoever finishes third in Group E at 17:00 BST on Sunday, in Gelsenkirchen.

Confusingly, however, it's actually the results in Group F later on Wednesday which will decide who the Three Lions face next. Stay with us for the next bit.

Southgate's men will face the Dutch, who finished third in Group D, unless the Czech Republic beat Turkey or Georgia are victorious against Portugal in Group F.

That's because Turkey, Czech Republic and Georgia can all finish third in Group F - and, if they do so while ending up with three points or more, they would take Hungary's place in the third-placed standings.

The knock-on impact of that would leave England with a tie against someone in Group E.

Ah, the joys of a 24-team tournament.

It was a fun experiencing squeezing onto the U-Bahn trains with hundreds of Belgium supporters, and a few Ukrainians here and there.

This man, who was too busy singing so I didn't catch his name, was making plenty of noise.

He was stood on the top of a metal bin, conducting a crowd of Belgium followers.

He wrapped a flag around his head to make some kind of bandana afterwards and had scarves hanging from his wrists.

I have no doubts he will be one of the Belgium fans currently singing in the concourse, filling up on apple juice before taking their seats.

  15. Postpublished at 16:17 British Summer Time 26 June

    Slovakia v Romania (17.00 BST)

Amid all the permutations, perhaps the most important for Slovakia and Romania is that both will progress with a draw tonight.

Will that lead to a quiet encounter? Or will both sides go all out to try and get an easier round of 16 tie, or land on the weaker half of the draw?

The winner of Group E will face either Slovenia or the Netherlands in the last 16, while the teams coming second and third will face one of England, Spain or France.

Winning the group is worthwhile, it seems.

Belgium fans are outnumbering the Ukrainians in the streets of Stuttgart.

A fan parade was led by a police convey from nearby U-Bahn stops and the Neckarpark train station.

They marched in huge numbers, chanting through the streets, banging train windows (calmly) and cheering as more large groups joined them.

I saw plenty of Axel Witsel, Romelu Lukaku, Kevin de Bruyne and Jan Vertonghen shirts - the old guard basically.

There was obviously a few wigs too!

  18. What happens to the losers?published at 16:12 British Summer Time 26 June

If Romania lose but Ukraine also lose, Romania will finish third. In that scenario, they would advance as one of the best third-placed teams as long as they don’t lose by at least five goals. If they do lose by five or more and end third, they’d be left waiting on Group F to see if they progress.

If Belgium lose but Romania also lose, Belgium finish third. In that scenario, they would advance as one of the best third-placed teams as long as they don’t lose by at least four goals, or they lose by four goals but score on the day (losing 5-1 for example). In the event of an unlikely heavy defeat, if they end third they would still have a chance of progressing depending on Group F’s results.

If Slovakia lose but Belgium also lose, Slovakia will finish third. In that scenario, they would advance as one of the best third-placed teams as long as they don’t lose by at least three goals; if they were to lose by three goals but scored on the night (losing 4-1 for example), they’d also progress.

If they lose 3-0, they’d go through if their disciplinary record is better than Hungary’s – Hungary have accumulated 11 bookings, while Slovakia have one prior to matchday three. A defeat by four or more goals would leave Slovakia waiting on the results of Group F (should both Georgia and Czech Republic fail to win, that would be enough).

If Ukraine lose but Slovakia also lose, Ukraine will finish third. In that scenario, they would have a realistic chance of advancing as one of the best third-placed teams. They’d definitely go through if they lost by a single-goal margin while scoring at least once (i.e. 2-1 or 3-2). If they lost 1-0, they would advance if their disciplinary record is better than Hungary’s. A defeat by two goals or more would leave Ukraine waiting on the results of Group F.

Clear? No? Well, that's as clear as it's going to be at the moment.

    BBC Sport at Stuttgart Arena

There are three changes to the Ukraine side from their crucial 2-1 victory over Slovakia on Friday.

The big news is that Chelsea striker Mykhailo Mudryk is not in the squad.

Everton left-back Vitaliy Mykolenko has recovered from an ankle injury and starts, while Arsenal's Oleksandr Zinchenko drops to the bench.

Andriy Yarmolenko is also a substitute as Georgiy Sudakov and Roman Yaremchuk come into the XI.

Ukraine XI: Trubin, Svatok, Yaremchuk, Dovbyk, Zabarnyi, Sudakov, Mykolenko, Brazhko, Shaparenko, Matviyenko, Tymchyk.

Meanwhile, Domenico Tedesco has made just one change to the Belgium XI who beat Romania.

Arsenal's Leandro Trossard returns, replacing Dodi Lukebakio, who is suspended after picking up two yellow cards in two games.

Belgium XI: Casteels, Theate, Faes, Vertonghen, De Bruyne, Tielemans, Trossard, Lukaku, Castagne, Doku, Onana.

  20. The most open group in Euros history?published at 16:08 British Summer Time 26 June

All four teams in Group E are on the three points after two games. It is the first time in European Championship history that this has happened.

Every side in this group could still finish top, or bottom. Prepare for a lot of predicted tables, permutations - and high drama on the field.
