  1. 'All Mainoo can do is go out and perform'published at 19:36 British Summer Time 27 August

Grimsby Town v Man Utd (20:00 BST)

    Chris Sutton
Former Premier League striker on BBC Radio 5 Live at Blundell Park

All Kobbie Mainoo can do is go out and perform and play well, albeit with the game being against Grimsby Town of League Two. Put the doubt in the manager's mind that he was wrong to leave him out. It is all about attitude, all the players that are getting their chance need to run hard and work as hard as their opponents.

BBC Sport football news reporter at Hill Dickinson Stadium

It looks like some fans are having issues getting into the stadium.

It means kick-off has been delayed here by 15 minutes and will now begin at 20:00 BST.

The club say it is "to ensure all supporters have safe access into Hill Dickinson Stadium in time for kick-off".

  6. 'We have been knocking on the door'published at 19:29 British Summer Time 27 August

Fulham v Bristol City (19:45 BST)

Fulham came mightily close to a trip to Wembley last season and were narrowly beaten by Liverpool in the semi-finals of this competition.

Marco Silva is determined to push on this season.

"It's very important. We are serious in it. We have been knocking on the door to arrive in the final stages of the cup competitions. When you already achieved the semis the next step is to reach the final but you have to go step by step."

  7. 'Our fans will make it uncomfortable'published at 19:28 British Summer Time 27 August

Grimsby Town v Man Utd (20:00 BST)

Man Utd boss Ruben Amorim and his players won't exactly be used to the facilities at Blundell Park on what promises to be an uncomfortable evening.

"It's obviously a little bit smaller than Old Trafford, so the players and the staff might find it more uncomfortable than they're used to in the Premier League," said Grimsby chief executive Polly Bancroft.

"I know our fans will make it as uncomfortable for them as possible, but they are professionals and they'll adapt I'm sure."

    Dion Dublin
Former Aston Villa and Manchester United striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Having the game here at Grimsby, this is when you find out if these Manchester United players are happy to get stuck in and roll their sleeves up, have a proper go. I think this is an advantage for Grimsby and United will have to be on their mettle to get the result over the line.

Grimsby v Man Utd (20:00 BST)

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport Chief Football Writer at Blundell Park

He is not involved tonight clearly but together with my colleague Sami Mokbel, we have found that Alejandro Garnacho's proposed move to Chelsea is getting nearer to a conclusion.

Manchester United have known it would happen at some point before the window closes next Monday evening but they have been holding out for £50m.

When it is confirmed, it will be interesting to see what the fee is.

  11. 'A wonderful experience for the players'published at 19:24 British Summer Time 27 August

    Everton v Mansfield (19:45 BST)

Everton kicked off their new era at the Hill Dickinson Stadium with a 2-0 win over Brighton on Sunday and now they welcome League One Mansfield to their shiny new ground.

Boss Nigel Clough is excited to witness the sold out stadium in all its glory.

"We're going to be playing in front of 50,000, [in a] new stadium. It's going to be a wonderful experience for the players.

"That really makes it, the stadium, because we're the first team in history to play a competitive cup game there.

"We don't know if we'll ever have the opportunity to go again, certainly in a competitive way, so it's a brilliant tie. The reports say it's absolutely spectacular.

"You have to thrive on that and really look forward to it and don't be too concerned about everything.

"It's just 90 minutes of football whether it's in front of 50,000 fans or 10 or 15,000 against Lincoln on Saturday. So just enjoy it."

  12. 'You find a way to make Mainoo fit'published at 19:22 British Summer Time 27 August

Grimsby Town v Man Utd (20:00 BST)

    Alex Turk, Fan writer

Kobbie Mainoo leaving Manchester United is just the latest potential summer twist that no one could have fathomed a year ago. And with good reason.

Ruben Amorim has received incredible backing by the fanbase for a head coach with a 24% win rate in the Premier League. But I can guarantee that the decision to offload an academy graduate of Mainoo's talent and potential would not go down well, especially if results don't improve.

This is a 20-year-midfielder who started for England in a major final around one year after making his senior debut.

Mainoo was talked about as a £100m-plus footballer. And that talk was justified, given his wealth of traits and early experience. He has scored crucial goals against Wolves, Liverpool and Lyon, and the winner in an FA Cup final against Manchester City, no less.

The task of thwarting United captain Bruno Fernandes seems like an impossible and unreasonable one. Fernandes will always be in the team, even if his disaster at Fulham extends into a poor run of form. So when will Mainoo's opportunity arrive?

You can't possibly tell me that Casemiro or Manuel Ugarte deserve prominent roles while Mainoo watches from the bench. United couldn't get any more hopeless in midfield.

When you possess a player of his quality, you find a way to make him fit.

  13. 'They will be better than us'published at 19:20 British Summer Time 27 August

    Oxford v Brighton (19:45 BST)

    Oxford United

Oxford midfielder Brian De Keersmaecker is looking to the test that Brighton will bring tonight as his side search for their first win.

“It will be very hard. We saw some clips of Brighton and they can play really good football.

"We’ll have a hard time, but we will try to play football on the counter, and try to score from there and try to make it hard for them because it’s a Premier League team and they will be better than us."

  14. 'It is something special'published at 19:19 British Summer Time 27 August

    Oxford v Brighton (19:45 BST)

Brighton have been a great acquisition to the Premier League since their promotion in 2017 and may have eyes on a first major trophy.

Boss Fabian Hurzeler said: "It doesn't have the tradition like the FA Cup, but we saw last season with Newcastle that if you win a title, it is still something special, the supporters are still very proud of their team and they enjoyed celebrating a title together."

Bit worried looking at that line-up, a fair few first teamers rested, making it harder for ourselves to beat United.

  16. First meeting since 1948published at 19:16 British Summer Time 27 August

Grimsby Town v Man Utd (20:00 BST)

League Two side Grimsby hit the jackpot when they were pulled out of the hat alongside Manchester United.

This is the first meeting between the two sides since 1948 and interest in the tie at Blundell Park was so high that Grimsby's website crashed almost immediately.

Could there be a shock on the cards tonight?

  17. 'Chance to test ourselves'published at 19:14 British Summer Time 27 August

Fulham v Bristol City (19:45 BST)

It's been a decent start to the season for Bristol City, who were beaten in the Championship play-offs last season.

The Championship is the focus but no one says no to a cup run.

Bristol City defender Rob Dickie said: "They're Premier League opposition and it's a good chance for us to test ourselves at that level. We're excited and we feel like we can take the game to them, compete and hopefully come away with the win."

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has made changes for tonight's match at Grimsby.

There has been a lot of chatter about Mainoo, who is yet to feature for a minute in the Premier League so far this season.

Indeed, the 20-year-old has not started a game since the home defeat by West Ham on 11 May.

Amorim said after Sunday's draw at Fulham Mainoo was competing with skipper Bruno Fernandes in his line-up, which evidently is an issue for the youngster, deemed good enough to start for England by Gareth Southgate in the Euro 2024 final less than 15 months ago.

There is no suggestion of Mainoo agitating to leave United just now. However, talks over a contract extension have stalled and it is hard to see them resuming unless Mainoo can persuade Amorim he is either better than Fernandes, or can be effective in a different role.

Chances could be limited this season with no European distractions, so Grimsby needs to be the start of the process.

  19. How they made it to round twopublished at 19:10 British Summer Time 27 August

Bristol City beat League One MK Dons comfortably to set up tonight's fixture away to Premier League Fulham.

League Two Grimsby Town also sailed through to round two with a 3-1 victory over Shrewsbury Town and were handed the massive draw of hosting six-time winner Man Utd.

Championship side Oxford United narrowly saw off Colchester thanks to an early goal from Tyler Goodrham and were drawn against Premier League Brighton.

And Manfield Town will be on the hunt for a cup upset after a 2-0 away win over Chesterfield sees them become the second side to visit Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium.

These early round ties are brilliant for all teams involved. For a team like Grimsby Town it offers brilliant revenue and exposure, and for the teams in the Premier League it offers a chance to get warmed up and give others minutes...Hopefully with a shock result or two along the way to keep it interesting!
