It also proved to be a difficult night for Real's rivals Atletico Madrid.

Conor Gallagher conceded a penalty as Benfica thrashed Atletico to continue their perfect start to this season's Champions League.

Kerem Akturkoglu gave the Portuguese side the lead in Lisbon with a composed 13th minute finish.

Four minutes after coming on as part of a triple half-time substitution, Gallagher was deemed to have caught Benfica's Vangelis Pavlidis in the penalty area after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check.

Former Real Madrid forward Angel Di Maria duly converted from the spot.

England midfielder Gallagher, who joined Atletico from Chelsea this summer, saw his night go from bad to worse as he was beaten to the ball by Alexander Bah from a Benfica corner, as he headed home the hosts' third in the 75th minute.

Orkun Kokcu added a fourth from the penalty spot after a sloppy foul from Reinildo Mandava.

Pavlidis hit the post for the home side just before half-time, while Atletico struck the crossbar at 1-0 down in the first half through Samuel Lino's mishit cross.

Benfica narrowly beat Red Star Belgrade 2-1 in their Champions League opener last month. Atletico had defeated RB Leipzig by the same scoreline.

Champions League Highlights: Lille 1-0 Real Madrid

We'll keep bringing you more Aston Villa reaction, but in the meantime let's have some recaps of the other action on Wednesday, which included holders Real Madrid falling to their first Champions League defeat since May 2023 as Lille upset them at the Pierre-Mauroy Stadium.

It was also a first loss for Carlo Ancelotti's side in 36 matches in all competitions - dating back to 18 January against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

Jonathan David scored the only goal from the penalty spot for Lille after a video assistant referee (VAR) review ruled that Real's French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga had blocked Edon Zhegrova’s free-kick with his arm.

The hosts were superb throughout and more than merited their victory to get up and running in this season's competition following a 2-0 loss to Sporting in their opening game.

Prior to scoring from the spot, Canada international David was denied by a superb double save from visiting keeper Andriy Lunin as Bruno Genesio's team dominated proceedings.

Brazilian forward Endrick, who at 18 years and 73 days became the youngest ever player to start for Real in the competition, was unable to make an impact, while England midfielder Jude Bellingham also struggled to impose himself on the game.

Commentator on BBC Radio 5 Live

Of the many hundreds and hundreds of matches I’ve covered over the years, that stands out as something very special.

Walking up to Villa Park, you could feel the anticipation in the air. I passed by the Champions Wall on the outside of the Holte End where the winners of 1982 in Rotterdam are honoured.

So many of the ingredients you need for a great occasion were there in bundles, whether it was the history or purely the novelty value of the great old ground hosting a match in this competition for the best part of half a century. And it duly delivered.

The cost of tickets for this match was something of a bone of contention. The cheapest standard-priced tickets (i.e. non-season ticket holder or concessions) was £85, and, of course, any number of dyed-in-the-wool Villa fans will have been priced out by that.

But those who could afford it will feel they got in return something that turned out to be priceless.

In fairness to [Ollie] Watkins, he definitely put the work in [before coming off]. There was lots of space in there but [Jhon] Duran. I think it's five winning goals [for him] so far this season, with only one start. One thing about football, you need to make sure when you change your positions, you do it early, you do it just in time, make sure people are set.

For once Bayern Munich aren't set. All that aggressive play they had previously was from a structure but that structure isn't there anymore. It's a great ball from Pau Torres, which then puts Duran in a great position. Duran's awareness and the ability to finish like that is an absolutely fantastic moment.

I don’t know how Duran scored that goal. He’s timed it absolutely spot on. The ball has travelled 60 yards and you know what, he made it look so easy.

As a centre forward, to put yourself in the right position while the ball is in the air, to hold off the defender, know where the keeper is, to execute it.

That was an outstanding, outstanding finish from a young boy who is just making his way in the game. Honestly, I couldn’t be happier for the fans.

Young and not so young Villa fans will have heard about nights like this for generations but never experienced it until now. With many of the Villa European Cup winners against Bayern Munich in 1982 watching on, sadly not recently deceased Gary Shaw, who was again mourned and fondly remembered, Villa beat Bayern 1-0 just like they did in Rotterdam 42 years ago.

The heroes were Jhon Duran, the Villa super-sub who scored the 79th minute goal, an instinctive 25-yard finish over Manuel Neuer, who was way off his line and goalkeeper [Emiliano] Martinez, with some super saves, including from a Harry Kane header right at the end.

Bayern have been beaten for the first time under Vincent Kompany’s management. They will wonder how with all of the possession that they had.

Villa fans who were here will be telling their grandchildren about this for generations and generations.

Wednesday's match at Villa Park was steeped in nostalgia, with thoughts for fans of a certain age cast back to that night in 1982, when Aston Villa beat Bayern Munich to lift the European Cup.

But football moves on, and the club's latest 1-0 victory over the Bundesliga giants will now live long in the memory for a new generation of supporters.

"I nearly fell off my seat," one young Villa fan told BBC Sport outside the ground after watching Jhon Duran's goal down Bayern. "It was amazing. I couldn't believe my eyes."

  17. McGinn sole survivor from infamous Preston drawpublished at 08:26 British Summer Time

Sadly, we can't find any pictures of the cabbage that was thrown on the field during Aston Villa's Championship draw at home to Preston in October 2018.

But we did find proof of one survivor from the starting line-up that day, current captain John McGinn. The Scotland midfielder remains an integral player for Villa but was denied a chance to feature in Wednesday's famous Champions League win having suffered a hamstring injury against Wolves last month.

I saw Villa in the Championship not that long ago, when they were losing to the likes of Bristol City and Preston North End. For them to be beating Bayern Munich six years later is incredible. Unai Emery's achievements over the last two years are remarkable.

Unai Emery paid his respects to Aston Villa's glorious past while offering up the enticing prospect of a golden future on one of Villa Park's greatest nights.

The 1982 European Cup Final victory over Bayern was relived by Villa's legends in the build-up to this Champions League meeting with the Bundesliga giants, Emery more than happy to accept the weight of history he carried into the club's first game in this competition for 41 years.

And while nothing can touch the 1-0 win Peter Withe's goal gave Villa in Rotterdam all those years ago, this famous win that re-established Villa in Europe's elite group will make memories forever for all those who witnessed it as that scoreline was repeated on a night rich in drama and gripping tension.

The headlines will be grabbed by substitute Jhon Duran, scoring the 79th-minute winner with his fifth goal off the bench this season, and keeper Emiliano Martinez for a stunning last-second save from Harry Kane’s header.

But the true architect of this victory, and this stunning Villa renaissance, made a sharp exit with a beaming smile, pumping his fists around an ecstatic Villa Park surrounded by a wall of noise.

Villa’s win is the finest moment in Emery’s brilliant rebuild, this European specialist on the sort of territory he enjoys after taking his team into the top four last season.

The sign of how far this club has come can be illustrated by the fact it was six years ago that an angry Villa fan threw a cabbage at then manager Steve Bruce in disgust following a draw with Preston North End.

Emery only gets thrown bouquets, his hero status confirmed by his face at the centre of huge flag dropped from The Holte End moments before kick-off.

Villa were only three points off the relegation zone when Emery succeeded sacked Steven Gerrard in October 2022. The transformation has been remarkable.
