Manuel Neuer is the man who made the mistake [for Jhon Duran's goal]. He is not the same player since his injury, that we have to say.

Before, he was the GOAT, but, at the moment, he’s not playing as safely as he did before and with the high defence, you also get a few problems.

In Munich, Vincent Kompany has done very well until now. Tonight, there are a few things you have to ask why?

Why didn’t he bring Jamal Musiala in centre-midfield from the beginning? He is the most important player at the moment. On the pitch, he’s the number 10. To give him a rest in such a game, everybody knows how well he is playing at home and I don’t know why he did the decision?

The next match [in the Bundesliga] is Frankfurt, which is not easy, but this is a Champions League game. To leave Musiala out, I think that was a wrong sign to the team.

It’s a little bit of a shock to Bayern Munich. Normally, Bayern Munich is always a team that has a big dominance but Unai Emery knows Bayern Munich very well.

I think he can read this team because he figured them out in 2022 and he did it again tonight. Kompany is a very, very young coach and today, he’s taken a lesson from Emery.

I said it before the game, was it a bit of arrogance taking Aston Villa too lightly? It seemed that way and it was an admission that he got it wrong by bringing [Jamal Musiala] on at half-time wasn’t it?

It does seem strange to think that you leave a key player out in a game of this magnitude, but maybe that was Bayern Munich’s arrogance to think they could do it.

  7. New format's winners and losers...published at 10:56 British Summer Time

We will have to wait and see Paul.

Bayern Munich will have, no doubt, been very happy with the new format after opening with a 9-2 win at home to Dinamo Zagreb, but maybe not so much now following Wednesday night's defeat at Aston Villa.

For all the praise heaped on Unai Emery's Villa, there were quite a few questions raised about Bayern boss Vincent Kompany's team selection and the form of star goalkeeper Manuel Neuer...

People complained that the old Champions League format was boring, but now they don't like this new one. There's almost an automatic resistance to change in the football world. Wait until the last few games of this league phase - instead of dead rubbers there will be a team in 25th place who still have everything to play for, while some of the top teams battle it out to avoid the playoffs. It's going to be much less repetitive and far more exciting.

  9. Tzolis 'wonder strike' helps Brugge beat Sturm Grazpublished at 10:43 British Summer Time

    Sturm Graz 0-1 Club Brugge

Christos Tzolis' stunning first-half goal helped Club Brugge to a narrow Champions League win at Sturm Graz.

The Greek winger, 22, expertly controlled Raphael Onyedika's cross-field pass and then curled a fine effort across home goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen into the net off the far post.

It provided a welcome three points for the Belgians, who were the better side throughout after bouncing back from their opening-game defeat to Borussia Dortmund.

However, it was a disappointing night for the Austrian champions, who failed to trouble Simon Mignolet in the Brugge goal, and also lost to French side Brest a fortnight ago.

I’m not in favour of the new Champions League format, but if it means PSG, Bayern, Real Madrid and Barcelona aren’t on top of the standings, then surprisingly I’m all for it.

  11. Monaco score late equaliser to deny Zagrebpublished at 10:35 British Summer Time

    Dinamo Zagreb 2-2 Monaco

    Media caption,

    Highlights: Dinamo Zagreb 2-2 Monaco

Monaco scored an 89th-minute equaliser from the penalty spot to come from 2-0 down and deny Dinamo Zagreb in torrential conditions in Croatia.

Zagreb, who had been thrashed 9-2 by Bayern Munich in their last Champions League outing, opened the scoring through Petar Sucic on the break on the stroke of half-time.

In heavy rain, which affected both sides' performance, Zagreb added a second through midfielder Martin Baturina's superb curling effort in the 66th minute.

But Monaco, who beat 10-man Barcelona 2-1 last month, halved the deficit through Mohammed Salisu's 74th-minute header.

And, moments after ex-Liverpool winger Takumi Minamino had an effort cleared off the line, Monaco were awarded a penalty after a foul on Folarin Balogun.

Captain Denis Zakaria blasted the spot-kick into the net with one minute of normal time remaining.

By conceding two goals, Dinamo broke the record for most goals conceded in their first two Champions League matches of a single campaign.

  12. Lookman shines for Atalantapublished at 10:31 British Summer Time

Lookman scores as Atalanta thrash Shakhtar Donetsk

Ademola Lookman starred as Atalanta claimed a comfortable Champions League win over Shakhtar Donetsk at the Arena AufSchalke in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.

The Italians have taken four points from their two Champions League fixtures after beginning their campaign with a goalless draw at home to Arsenal.

Their victory over Shakhtar never looked in doubt from the moment former Charlton and Everton forward Lookman created their 21st-minute opener with a curling delivery from the left that was flicked home by Albania captain Berat Djimsiti.

Having already rattled the Shakhtar crossbar, Lookman then doubled Atalanta's lead a minute before the interval, with a placed effort into the bottom corner from Sead Kolasinac's pass.

Gian Piero Gasperini's side put the contest beyond doubt three minutes after the restart when Raoul Bellanova capitalised on some hesitant defending to nod in Davide Zappacosta's cross at the back post.

Shakhtar, who are playing their home matches at Schalke's ground due to Ukraine's ongoing conflict with Russia, struggled to trouble the visiting defence and have one point from two games.

JoeD on X: This is the problem with the new Champions League format - Bayern don't get the chance for revenge in the return leg. Without home & away ties, luck comes into the league positions - hoping to draw the stronger teams at home, and slightly weaker teams away.

Feyenoord beat Girona in action packed game

Girona scored two own goals and missed a penalty as they fell to a narrow defeat in their first Champions League home match.

The Spanish side took the lead through 34-year-old defender David Lopez in the 19th minute, but were pegged back four minutes later when Quinten Timber's header deflected in off Girona midfielder Yangel Herrera.

Teenager Antoni Milambo put Feyenoord 2-1 ahead in the 33rd minute and the Dutch side were given a penalty moments later for a foul on Timber, but goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga denied Ayase Ueda from the spot.

In the second half Girona had a goal disallowed and were then gifted a penalty of their own after Timon Wellenreuther fouled Bojan Miovski in the box, but the Feyenoord keeper redeemed himself to save the former Aberdeen forward's spot-kick.

Donny van de Beek equalised for the hosts, scoring his first goal for the club since joining from Manchester United in the summer.

But Girona were denied a first point in the competition after their defender Ladislav Krejci turned Igor Paixao's 79th-minute cross into his own net.

Girona also lost to Paris St-Germain in their Champions League opener after a 90th-minute own goal.

With three they equalled Fenerbahce's record for most own goals in a single Champions League season, but became the first side to net an own goal in each of their first two games in the competition.

After a glorious night at Villa Park and a long drive home, and no sleep after the school run I went to my local famous coffee shop in Ilkley, Yorkshire (BBC Sport pundit Rory Smith goes there). The staff gave me (the Villa really) a round of applause - and so did some confused customers. I watched the game in 1982 on TV aged nine with my sadly departed father and sister. It was a day for the Villa family, but a huge thanks to all the other fans who love the game and said well done.

Champions League Highlights: RB Leipzig 2-3 Juventus

Juventus produced a remarkable comeback after having goalkeeper Michele di Gregorio sent off to beat RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

Di Gregorio was dismissed in the 59th minute for a handball outside the box with the score at 1-1, after Dusan Vlahovic cancelled out Benjamin Sesko's goal for the hosts.

Slovenia forward Sesko restored Leipzig's lead with a 65th-minute penalty before Serbia striker Vlahovic made it 2-2.

In a thrilling match, Francisco Conceicao scored in the 82nd-minute to make it two wins out of two for Juventus in this season's competition.

It was a fine win for the Italians, who had suffered a double blow with injuries to captain Gleison Bremer and Nicolas Gonzalez early in the game.

RB Leipzig, who host Liverpool on 23 October, have failed to win in their last four games in the Champions League.

Unreal atmosphere last night at Villa Park. We are making it into a fortress again and could be as iconic as Anfield. Unbelievable transformation under Unai Emery but, given his managerial record, we can't be too surprised. What a time to be a Villa fan!
