  4. 'Gravenberch makes it look easy'published at 07:49 British Summer Time

    Liverpool 2-0 Bologna

Speaking on the BBC Champions League highlights show, Thomas Hitzlsperger spoke about Ryan Gravenberch's role for Liverpool.

He said: "It's not easy but when you watch Ryan Gravenberch, he makes it look easy. He's enjoying the season under Arne Slot.

"He's that number six [position] and the players are looking for him, and he's looking for [the ball]. He keeps pushing on and goes on the overlap, that shows his confidence at the moment.

"I admire the drive he has, the dynamic he brings into the game."

  5. 'Outstanding' & 'a revelation' - Gravenberch's Liverpool transformationpublished at 07:43 British Summer Time

    Liverpool 2-0 Bologna

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Anfield

In only a few months, Ryan Gravenberch has transformed his Liverpool career.

From a squad player last season under Jurgen Klopp, he now looks a complete midfielder with Arne Slot in charge.

The 22-year-old Netherlands international again impressed on Wednesday with another all-action performance as the Reds battled to a 2-0 win over Bologna, thanks to goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah.

Gravenberch was superb once more, with his performance including a match-high 18 passes in the final third, a passing accuracy of 91.1%, three successful dribbles and four duels won, while he also gained possession nine times.

"I was delighted with him," said boss Slot, who has now won eight of his first nine matches in charge - the first Liverpool manager to do so.

"Ryan was again outstanding. I don't say that to players at half-time because there is still 45 minutes to go but I said after the game 'again, big performance'."

  6. Reds give Slot victory in first European tie at Anfieldpublished at 07:38 British Summer Time

    Liverpool 2-0 Bologna

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at Anfield

Liverpool were one of the other English sides to win this week, with Arne Slot's first home Champions League match as the Reds' boss ending in victory on Wednesday as goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah helped his side defeat battling Italian side Bologna at Anfield.

Slot became the first man in Liverpool's distinguished history to win eight of his first nine games in charge, but his side had to survive some nervous moments in this hard-fought match.

The hosts scored in the 12th minute when Mac Allister was able to convert from close range following Salah's excellent low cross from the right side.

Both sides had potential goals ruled out for offside – Thijs Dallinga for Bologna and Darwin Nunez for Liverpool - before the Italians, in their first ever Champions League campaign and only their second time in European football's top competition, ended the first half well.

Dan Ndoye hit the post and Bologna capitalised on an error from Trent Alexander-Arnold in his own penalty area, before Alisson saved to deny Kacper Urbanski.

The visitors continued to create chances after the break, with Alisson saving well from Riccardo Orsolini and Urbanski firing over when well placed.

But the hosts sealed the win in style with Salah's 49th Champions League goal, cutting in on to his left foot and curling a wonderful shot into the top corner to ensure Slot, who replaced Jurgen Klopp in the summer, continued his fine start to his tenure.

  7. English clubs on a highpublished at 07:33 British Summer Time

    Simon Stone
BBC Sport's chief football news reporter

It has been an excellent couple of days for English clubs in the Champions League, with four wins from four, capped by the sensational victory for Aston Villa last night.

The fact teams from Germany, France and Italy were beaten is also good news when it comes to next season.

There is a long, long way to go obviously, but the points go towards the European Performance Slots for next season, which offer two extra places in the Champions League.

Italy and Germany got them this season but of the bigger countries, England are so far doing the best in 2024-25.

There are many, many games to go but England has started well.

  8. 'His dream has come true' - the story of Duran's risepublished at 07:29 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Emlyn Begley
    BBC Sport

You speak to people instrumental in Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran's career and some common themes come up - a raw, supremely talented footballer, a family man - and somebody who needs to be guided.

The 20-year-old Colombia striker enjoyed the best moment of his career to date with a stunning 25-yard Champions League winner against Bayern Munich on Wednesday night, underlining his growing super sub status for Aston Villa.

It was his sixth goal, and fifth winner, in fewer than 300 minutes of football this season.

It has been a pretty rapid rise for one of the youngest goalscorers in Colombian professional football history - and the youngest ever foreign signing in Major League Soccer.

"We told him, today he is here in El Dorado fields, tomorrow he could be stepping into the best stadiums in the world and facing the best players in the world," youth coach Wilberth Perea Mena, who first met Duran as a 14-year-old at his first club Envigado, told BBC Sport.

"He laughed, but I think that dream has come true."

  10. Duran's 'quite unlikely' journey to the top - analysispublished at 07:21 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

Speaking on the BBC Champions League highlights show, Nedum Onuoha said: "At times we're almost jaded by the fact we see the same teams playing in the Champions League year in, year out, but here's Villa doing it for the first time in over 40 years. And to do it against Bayern Munich, in your first home game, is incredible."

Rory Smith, chief soccer correspondent of the New York Times, also discussed Jhon Duran's unlikely journey to the Premier League from Colombian side Envigado via Chicago Fire of the MLS.

  11. Villa Park in ecstasy on famous nightpublished at 07:14 British Summer Time

    Aston Villa 1-0 Bayern Munich

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Villa Park

Villa Park has waited 41 years to enjoy a night like this in Europe's elite competition, since when, as holders, they went out to Juventus in the quarter-final in 1983.

That long wait felt as it if was worth every minute for Aston Villa's fans when the final whistle sounded on a famous win that signalled they were back in Europe's elite group.

And what drama was packed into those closing moments of almost unbearable tension as Villa clung on to the lead given to them by Jhon Duran's expert finish.

Harry Kane, who otherwise had a quiet night, saw a free-kick deflected over in stoppage time then a header that looked certain to cut Villa's celebrations cruelly short turned away brilliantly by the diving figure of Emi Martinez.

The final whistle went almost immediately, the noise sweeping around Villa Park a mixture of ecstasy and relief.

Under Unai Emery’s brilliant guidance, Villa produced a mixture of superbly well-drilled defence, a competitive edge and threat on the break, exemplified by Duran spotting Neuer out of position and delivering the perfect finish.

Villa now have six points from two games and under this manager, in this atmosphere, no-one will relish a trip to Villa Park.

  12. Duran's late stunner gives Villa famous victory over Bayernpublished at 07:07 British Summer Time

Duran puts Aston Villa ahead against Bayern Munich

The pick of Wednesday's games was at an exultant Villa Park, where Jhon Duran emerged from the bench in dramatic fashion once more to give Aston Villa a magnificent victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

In a meeting surrounded by a rich sense of history as a repeat of the Villa's 1982 European Cup final victory over the German giants in Rotterdam, Duran ensured a replica of that scoreline with his fifth goal after coming on as substitute this season.

Duran, on as a 70th-minute substitute for Ollie Watkins, took only nine minutes to make his mark when he caught Bayern’s veteran keeper Manuel Neuer out of position with a composed lofted finish.

It was another triumph for Villa manager Unai Emery, this result continuing his side's impressive start to their Champions League campaign after a 3-0 victory against Young Boys in Switzerland in their opening game.
