Goals are an issue for Crystal Palace, they simply are not scoring enough. Jean-Philippe Mateta starts today and he scored a significant amount of their goals last year. I like the team, I like the players in the team, but something is just not clicking for them in the same way as last year.

Joseph @13:17, I think Isak is being pragmatic. He's waiting to see which direction the club is going in as the club has not invested in the squad, in fact made it slightly worse, for the past couple of transfer windows.

Newcastle can take some comfort from the fact that they are still creating opportunities. They are just not being clinical enough. They are not half chances either, they are big chances where they should be hitting the back of the net. Alexander Isak hasn’t hit top form yet, Callum Wilson has had a few injuries, but it will come for them. At one point a team will be on the end of a real beating from them.

Yet another Man U player finally has a good game just to be dropped the game after! No wonder half of them aren't playing well...it means they keep their place in the starting line up!

    Martin

Another Utd midfielder who is a bench-warmer. It began with Van de Beek, then Mount, and now Ugarte. Such a disjointed, unstable, poisonous club that it’s not surprising that they’re battling with mid-table teams or worse.

West Ham v Man Utd (14:00 GMT)

Goalkeeper Andre Onana is confident Manchester United will score more goals in future games, after missing opportunities to beat Fenerbahce in the Europa League on Thursday.

The 28-year-old said after the 1-1 draw: "It will come. Everything in life is temporary. It will come - if not today, it will be tomorrow.

"Also we, as defenders, have to take responsibility. We were leading and I start to question myself to do maybe things better - my defenders as well.

"I don't think we have to look at the strikers because they are trying. The chances are there and at the moment the ball is not going in the net, but it will come.

Erik ten Hag can't say you are ignoring the first half of the Tottenham game because of the Bruno Fernandes red card. With eleven men in the first half for 40 minutes or so they were destroyed.

How can you say that? This is not what you should be saying. They will never improve if he keeps saying that they are when they are not. He is in denial.

I said it last year, and I’m saying it again, if we keep relying on a paper-thin squad, we’re just one or two injuries away from full-on panic mode! I know FFP limits us, but how are we still stuck like this!? No Gordon today, and the only attacking option on the bench is a Sheffield Utd striker who hasn’t played a full game. It’s exhausting to always be on edge about injuries ruining our season. And the irony is, I was feeling upbeat just ten minutes ago before hearing about Gordon! But that’s where we’re at right now, and it’s not fun.

Newcastle should 100% have scored after registering 35 shots across two games - but it is not a full-blown problem for Eddie Howe's side.

I doubt there is a feeling on the pitch that they won't score. Players in a team that creates opportunities do usually have a belief there will be better times ahead.

When teams do not create many chances then it is different because there is a pressure to take them.

    Newcastle are not that side.

With their creativity, the attacking players they have are more than capable of scoring multiple goals in any game.

Plus, Newcastle do not score loads of goals anyway - yet they know how to get results and they still are.

People will overreact but the situation is not as bad as some are making it out to be.

Football is like that. Often people never notice these things but then someone brings out a stat and it escalates from there.

It is a big game for Newcastle as they have just faltered recently, they are definitely struggling right now. For me I think Newcastle need to win this one, they are eighth or ninth in the table now, slipping down a bit. So it will be key to get three points.

One of my favourite things about Maresca so far is he's happy to drop expensive, underperforming players (Fernandez). Much prefer the Caicedo/ Lavia midfield.

Ah, yes. That bargain £173m midfield of Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

  12. 'Today will be a tough game'published at 13:42 Greenwich Mean Time 27 October

    Chelsea v Newcastle (14:00 GMT)

    Chelsea

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, speaking to Sky Sports: "The season is very long so at the moment we are in the right direction, we are doing well, but we need to continue with that and try to improve game after game."

On the maturity Nicolas Jackson has been showing: "He's showing everything, doing well. On and off the ball he's helping the team. We also have Nkunku in that position so we can choose."

On where they will improve today from the Liverpool defeat: "We can improve many things, the way we can attack and defend we can do many things better. Today will for sure be a tough game, they are a physically strong, a very good team with a very good manager who have been a bit unlucky and probably deserve some more points."

  13. Silver linings for Palace?published at 13:40 Greenwich Mean Time 27 October

Crystal Palace v Tottenham (14:00 GMT)

It is only the fourth time in Crystal Palace's history they have failed to win any of their opening eight league games, the previous occasion coming in the 1992-93 Premier League season. Palace were relegated at the end of that campaign.

It is not all doom and gloom for the Eagles though, because other teams have been here before - and stayed up.

Ten times a side has failed to win any of their opening eight Premier League games and managed to avoid the drop.

Bournemouth had an identical record to Palace at this stage last season - no wins, three draws and five losses - and finished 12th.

That also happens to be one of 13 occasions a team has gone on to avoid relegation after collecting only three points from their first eight Premier League matches.

Palace have managed to do that twice themselves, in 2014 and 2018.

Is it as bad as it seems? More analysis over here

As a player, it is tough when you have not won in weeks and you know that everyone you are playing fancies their chances against you.

Teams will take it to you because they want to make you feel uncomfortable and, historically, teams near the bottom of a league do not have good away records, so that can then create anxiety for home fixtures because there is more pressure on them.

It does not matter how that first win comes but it is so important. But then immediately you will be looking at the fixtures and thinking when will the second come?

Everyone is objectively aware of how good the top four teams are, but some other teams are tough too. Those mid-table teams are often more robust.

Realistically, to survive you need between eight and 11 wins a season, but if you do not believe you can achieve that then that is another issue.

Players need to be able to handle any scenario you are given in the Premier League, but unfortunately for a lot of these teams near the bottom, they are so new to it so they can't lean on previous experiences. Lessons need to be learned quickly and then applied so that results start picking up.

But fans also need to look at performances as well as results.

Supporters might be looking at other managers as an option, but the grass isn't always greener - and then what if it makes no difference?

It is OK having positive performances but not getting anything out of the game - because at least you know you are along the right rack. It is when the performances aren't good that you can start to be concerned.

But having said that, no team should be in real panic mode right now.

  17. Winless quartet set new top-flight recordpublished at 13:32 Greenwich Mean Time 27 October

Crystal Palace v Tottenham (14:00 GMT)

Crystal Palace's 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest on Monday meant that for the first time in the English top-flight's 126-year history, four clubs have failed to win any of their first eight matches of a league season.

That's a record which could extend to nine matches today if Palace fail to beat Tottenham after Ipswich, Southampton and Wolves all lost or drew yesterday.

According to Opta,, external 10 clubs in the Premier League era (since 1992-93) have failed to win any of their first eight games and yet have gone on to avoid relegation.

The most recent of those came last season when Bournemouth, who did not win until their 10th league fixture of 2023-24, recovered to finish 12th.

  18. James must show greater 'personality'published at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 27 October

    Chelsea v Newcastle (14:00 GMT)

    Reece JamesImage source, Getty Images

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has demanded "more" leadership from captain Reece James following his return from injury.

The right-back recovered from hamstring surgery to make his first Chelsea start since December 2023 in Sunday's 2-1 defeat by Liverpool but Maresca has challenged his skipper to show greater "personality".

"I spoke with him and I expect from him more in terms of leadership inside the changing room," said Maresca.

"He's on the way, he's doing well, he's progressing but I expect more.

"Most of the time, a player thinks that 'because I am captain I expect that you [the manager] give me more'.

"No, for me because you are the captain you have to give more. You have to give more than the rest.

"I expect it from Reece and his team-mates expect it from him to give always more in terms of leadership."

  19. 'I am backing Tottenham'published at 13:28 Greenwich Mean Time 27 October

Crystal Palace v Tottenham (14:00 GMT)

    Chris Sutton banner

Crystal Palace are desperate to get their first league win of the season, but any sort of positive result would do after losing their past three games.

I was at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday with BBC Radio 5 Live for Arsenal versus Shaktar Donetsk in the Champions League, and Roy Hodgson was there as a Uefa technical observer. Is his next step a return to the Palace hotseat?

I am saying that tongue in cheek because there is no way they will bring him back - or that he would go back - but Eagles manager Oliver Glasner is already under pressure and the heat will really be on if they lose this game.

I am backing Tottenham, although I am a bit concerned about the fitness of Son Heung-min, who is back from injury but was rested for their Europa League game with AZ Alkmaar on Thursday.

Tiredness could affect other players. Spurs play high-pressing and high-energy football and I wonder what playing twice a week will do to them.

Also, the way Tottenham play might suit Palace more, because Eberechi Eze will have a lot more space than he had in their defeat against Nottingham Forest on Monday.

So Palace should pose more of a threat, but Spurs blew West Ham away and, while this will be a lot closer, I still expect them to win.

    Sutton's prediction: 1-2
