However the Robins piled on the pressure after the break and Rob Dickie fired into the top corner from 25-yards to level before Ross McCrorie thundered home a loose ball to complete the comeback 14 minutes from time.
Sunderland could well find themselves back at Ashton Gate in the play-off semi-final in a couple of weeks. On this showing it should be a must-watch.
