Tactically, if there's somewhere Luton can exploit it has got to be 36-year-old Craig Forsyth at left-back for Derby, and Isaiah Jones is absolutely rapid down that right side.

John Eustace makes the one change from the Derby side which were pegged back late on to draw at Portsmouth, but it’s a big one...

Keeper Jacob Zetterstrom is expected to miss the rest of the season with a facial injury so Josh Vickers is handed a start in goal, the 29-year-old’s first action since 17 August.

The former Lincoln stopper began the campaign as No1 while the Rams waited for Zetterstrom to be registered and the good omen for the hosts is he played in a 1-0 home win over Middlesbrough in their opening game at Pride Park following promotion.

Matt Bloomfield has made two changes to the Luton XI which went down 1-0 at home to Blackburn last time out.

Kai Naismith and Lamine Fanne come in for the Hatters with Liam Walsh and Tahith Chong dropping to the bench.

Although Luton have lost just six of the 16 games they have played since Matt Bloomfield was appointed as Rob Edwards' successor at Kenilworth Road, the Hatters have not been out of the relegation zone since 18 January, and that can't change until Monday at the earliest, no matter how they fare at Pride Park this afternoon.

They slipped to a damaging 1-0 home reverse to mid-table Blackburn last Saturday and the trip to Derby looks crucial, with three promotion-chasing sides to come in their final three games.

The stats are not in Luton's favour, with Opta giving them a near 90% chance of becoming the first team since Sunderland in 2017 to suffer successive relegations from the Premier League to League One.

They are also short of forward players, with Jacob Brown and Elijah Adebayo (pictured) ruled out for the rest of the season and have recalled 20-year-old Oli Lynch from a loan spell with Hemel Hempstead, where he scored eight goals in 17 appearances, and he could play a part in their remaining fixtures.

Derby most certainly have their Championship destiny in their own hands.

Former Rams midfielder John Eustace opted to make the switch from play-off chasing Blackburn in February but despite County dropping to the foot of the table on 1 March after a couple of chastening defeats, a run of four straight wins hauled them out of the drop zone.

Things would have looked a lot better but for Portsmouth's injury-time leveller in a 2-2 draw at Fratton Park on Saturday but after the visit of Luton today, the Rams will finish their campaign with two out of three games against other sides in the bottom third of the division.

The Bank Holiday weekend begins with all eyes on the relegation battle as fourth-bottom Derby host second-bottom Luton in possibly the biggest game of the season for both sides.

The Rams, in 21st place, are three points above the Hatters, but have a far superior goal difference and a victory at Pride Park could go a long way to securing their safety, with three games to come after this.

John Eustace's side go into the game on the back of one defeat in their past seven games and a tally of 14 points from a possible 21 to sit a point a clear of the drop zone with a better goal difference than the teams below them.

Luton are scrapping to avoid a second straight relegation after a troubled campaign and know a win over Derby, although not enough to get out of the bottom three, would take them level on points with the Rams.

"We understand the situation we're in and the work we need to do this weekend and we're ready to go," boss Matt Bloomfield told BBC Three Counties Radio.

"We have to make sure we do the first job before we worry about Monday. The position we're in, and Derby's, we understand how big the game is, what implications it can have for our season."

Former EFL stalwart and latterly BBC Squad Goals broadcaster Joe Thompson has passed away at the age of 36.

Thompson was diagnosed with cancer for a third time in April last year, five years after he retired from playing after a career which saw him make more than 100 appearances each in League One and Two.

Thompson was found to have stage four lymphoma - a type of blood cancer - which had spread to his lungs after twice recovering from the disease during his playing career.

The Bath-born player came through Man United's academy but began and finished his professional career with Rochdale, having three spells with the club, also playing for Tranmere and Carlisle.

Rochdale said they were "devastated" and that he had passed away peacefully at home on Thursday with his family by his side.

Whatever happens in the lunchtime showdown between Derby and Luton, the battle to avoid Championship relegation looks set to go down to the final day.

We'll have plenty of time to look at the top of the table in the run-up to our 15:00 BST kick-offs, but for now it's all about the basement battle.

Not last chance saloon by any stretch, but given Luton's run-in, this feels like a crucial game for them to win.

They managed to overturn a 1-0 deficit in the 89th minute to beat Derby 2-1 in stoppage-time at Kenilworth Road on 20 December, what Hatters fans wouldn't give for a repeat here.

As for Derby, a victory here would take them above Hull and Pompey, for a few hours at least, with a trip to the Tigers to follow next Saturday.

Later on this afternoon Plymouth head to play-off chasing Middlesbrough, Portsmouth are at Norwich, Stoke host Sheffield Wednesday, Hull City head to Swansea while at 17:30 BST Cardiff visit Sheffield United and Oxford United welcome Leeds at 20:00 BST.
