The departed Enzo Maresca, who led Leicester to the Championship title last season before joining Chelsea, was well-liked by the squad and Steve Cooper struggled to connect with players, even if some of the senior members of the squad - including Jamie Vardy - were onside.

There was growing concern from the club that any disconnect would impact their survival prospects, and one of the reasons why they dismissed Cooper.

But under Ruud van Nistelrooy, some players have recently raised concerns over the standard and intensity of training with the drop-off being connected to their impending relegation.

The fall-out with midfielder Harry Winks - Van Nistelrooy has dropped him for the last four games for refusing to agree to stay at the training ground one night a week - emphasises the growing tensions.

Leicester will return to the Championship after a disappointing season back in the top flight after their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday sealed their relegation.

One damning statistic stands out as a painful illustration of why Leicester are on their way back to the second division.

Having failed to breach the Liverpool backline, they set an unwanted all-time top-flight record with their ninth home Premier League game in a row without scoring. The last time they hit the target here in the league was on 8 December against Brighton.

Many Leicester fans left well before the end, rather than wait for their fate to be officially sealed. Now a decision must be made on the future of manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, who has had no impact since succeeding sacked Steve Cooper in November.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca is suspended for one match after picking up his third yellow card of the season.

The Italian was booked while celebrating Pedro Neto's 93rd minute winner at Fulham and will not be on the touchline for the home game against Everton on Saturday.

The FA have confirmed that Maresca is now suspended with his two previous bookings coming against Newcastle and Bournemouth.

Assistant manager and former goalkeeper Willy Caballero could replace Maresca before his return against Liverpool in two weeks' time.

So is Trent Alexander-Arnold staying or going?

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville said on Sky Sports that if the England full-back was going to follow Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk in signing a new deal at Liverpool, he would have done that by now:

"If he wasn’t leaving, he’d have put them out of their misery and he would have got the contract signed.

"Unless there is a disparity on the money?

"But I’d imagine they would have driven it to completion and got that hassle out of his life.

"I can only think that to continue with the hassle that he is leaving, unless there is a complete disconnect between the contract that was offered and the contract that he wants."

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, speaking to BBC's Match of the Day, on Trent Alexander-Arnold's left-foot finish: "It was a great finish from Trent. I wonder if he ever did [score with his left foot]? He has a very good left foot, but because his right foot is so, so, so exceptional he prefers to hit it with his right. His left foot is also something he can use really well."

On the importance of his goal: "Great for him. Last week it was Virgil [scoring a winner in the league], now it is Trent. It's been Mo [Salah] for a long, long time - today he missed a few. But it is so nice to have players who can step up if we really need it. That's what Virgil did last week and Trent did today."

Trent Alexander-Arnold's winner against Leicester City was the first he has scored in his entire senior career with his left foot.

And the Liverpool player said after the game that he was "saving it for the right time".

"Sure, it was [one of the best moments in a Liverpool shirt]. I have scored a few goals here at this stadium," Alexander-Arnold told Sky Sports.

"We are so close to winning the title now and the first game back from injury as well, it was an important game for me.

"I am pretty sure it is my first left-foot goal. It's taken a few years, but got there in the end. Probably the one type of goal that I was missing, but I was saving it for a right time.

"We are so close to wining - just one win away now. To do that, especially with the fans here, is a very, very special moment."

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s winner against Leicester yesterday was the 23rd goal of his professional career - all coming at Liverpool, whom he joined at the age of six.

He also has registered 90 assists for the Reds after making his first-team debut in October 2016, when Jurgen Klopp was in charge.

In August 2017, he scored his first goal in a Champions League play-off round tie against Bundesliga side Hoffenheim while his first Premier League goal came against Swansea City in December of that year.

The full-back has hit double figures for assists during three Premier League seasons - 2018-19 (12 assists), 2019-20 (13) and 2021-22 (12).

He has three goals in the English top flight this season, with a four-goal tally in 2019-20 his best goals return in the league.

While Liverpool have managed to extend the contracts of both Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk in recent weeks, the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold at Anfield remains uncertain.

As mentioned, Alexander-Arnold is in the final months of his contract at Liverpool and is free to discuss a move abroad.

And he is reportedly in contact with Real Madrid over finalising a move to the Spanish giants before the start of next season.

The La Liga side have made the 26-year-old a priority target this summer with sources close to the situation saying the defending Spanish champions have been tracking the player for close to two years.

Alexander-Arnold has spent his entire career at Anfield, coming through the academy to make more than 300 appearances for the club.

He has won every major trophy while playing for Liverpool and is the club's vice-captain.

You could look at Trent Alexander-Arnold's goal celebration [against Leicester City] both ways.

It might just be that real joy and sensation of scoring such a vital goal or bit of an anger in there for the criticism he has taken because of the contract situation.

But he looks like a happy man. It's a great moment for him.

He [Trent Alexander-Arnold] might have agreed to go to Real Madrid and that celebration was almost a lovely way for him to be adored by the fans one last time.

They were singing his name before he scored, which I was made-up about because there have been a lot of Liverpool fans who have sort of turned against him, which I don't understand, personally.

But I am still in the camp where there could be a chance he still stays.

Liverpool are potentially going to spend big in the summer. If they are going to spend big, that will allow them to compete for the next four or five years and...who knows?

Liverpool's talismanic Egypt forward Mohamed Salah and captain Virgil van Dijk were also in Trent Alexander-Arnold's situation until recently.

Their contracts expired in June and both would have been able to leave Anfield on a free transfer in the summer, before they signed new two-year deals.

The question is, will Alexander-Arnold follow suit or will he leave the club after being rumoured to have been in advanced talks with Real Madrid.

There has been a lot of talk about Trent [Alexander-Arnold] leaving. I still think he is trying to find his worth at Liverpool.

When you are a youngster and you come through, you don't get the riches the other players get. What he has shown over the last eight years at the football club is the ability to change games single-handedly.

I think he knows his worth in his head and I wonder if there is a side of him saying 'I am going to see what Salah and Van Dijk sign for and I want to push up and around those figures because I feel like I am an integral part of that [team]'.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is out of contract at the end of the season and has yet to sign a new deal with Liverpool, with reports linking him to a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid.

Asked about his future following his match-winning display against Leicester, the England international did not provide a definitive answer.

"I have said all season that I am not going to speak on my situation. I am not going to go into the details," he told Sky Sports at the King Power Stadium.

"But days like today are always special. Scoring goals, playing games, winning games, winning titles - they are special moments for me and I am glad to do my part."
