Sunderland's 2-2 draw with bottom of the table Plymouth means they stay fourth and could be four points off the automatic promotion places if Burnley beat Leeds on Monday.

It was a big day in the play-off race with West Brom's 5-1 hammering of Portsmouth jumping them into fifth place while defeats for Middlesbrough and Blackburn Rovers allows the chasing pack to close the gap.

Bristol City's 2-1 win over Rovers leaves them just one point outside the top six and up to eighth place.

Sheffield Wednesday's win at QPR moves them back into the frame while another defeat for Watford, this time at Coventry, sees them fail to take advantage and could that be curtains for boss Tom Cleverley?

  2. Plymouth still adrift despite late levellerpublished at 17:10 Greenwich Mean Time 25 January

Cardiff City and Hull City are the weekend's big movers at the bottom of the Championship.

Hull won at Sheffield United last night while Cardiff's 2-1 victory over Derby lifts them four points clear and leaves the Rams deep in trouble on the back of a six game losing streak.

Luton's lunchtime defeat by Millwall means they're three points adrift and still looking for a first win under Matt Bloomfield.

Plymouth's late point at Sunderland gives them a little hope of bridging a seven point chasm.

Portsmouth's 5-1 battering at West Brom damages their goal difference and means they're only two points clear while Stoke have dropped deeper into trouble with a goalless draw against Oxford.

Two goals in two second half minutes get the job done for Cardiff and it's a sixth successive league defeat for Derby.

Callum Robinson with his 11th goal of the season and a second from substitute Anwar El Ghazi did the damage for the home side.

Lars-Jorgen Salvesen's header - his first goal for the visitors - gave Derby some hope and he saw another headed effort saved.

This game felt pivotal and it's seven unbeaten for the Welshmen.

    QPR 0-2 Sheffield Wednesday

QPR's recent hot form has a bucket of cold water poured over it by the visitors who have done a job on the Hoops here.

After a strong start for the hosts and a free kick from Kenneth Paal which rattles the woodwork, Wednesday nicked the first goal with substitute Michael Smith nodding home.

A sucker punch late on from Callum Patterson completed the scoreline but QPR should not be too disheartened. Put it behind, take the medicine and get back on the horse sort of thing.

Danny Rohl's side have been searching for consistency with just one win in six before today so they need to back this up against Luton at home next Saturday.

Stringing wins together has been a problem having backed up only twice so far this campaign.

    Preston 2-1 Middlesbrough

Preston have thrown a spoke in Middlesbrough's efforts to make the play-offs.

Goals from Stefan Thordarson and Emil Riis win it for them as Boro lose on the road for the second Saturday in a row.

New signings Ryan Giles, Morgan Whittaker and George Edmundson will surely be straight into the first-team very quickly.

You look at the game and it's a banana skin, they were never going to make it easy for Sunderland.

The two goals that we conceded were sloppy, we didn't deal with the ball, we panicked.

We needed to command the box a lot better for the second goal, just clear your lines.

A big shock result at the Stadium of Light where Sunderland throw away two priceless points and Plymouth claim an unlikely point on the road.

The Black Cats came from behind to lead but Regis Le Bris will be so frustrated that his side could not see it out.

Sunderland remain unbeaten at home and Plymouth have not won away, but it will feel like a loss for the hosts and a win for the visitors.

    Coventry 2-1 Watford

That is three wins on the spin for Frank Lampard's Sky Blues and, apart from a spirited late push from Watford, they were value for the win.

Two goals from Victor Torp - the first a poacher's finish and the second a free-kick of which his manager would have been proud – took his tally to five for the season.

It also delivered three points which have boosted Lampard's play-off hopes.

Tom Cleverley's side remain above Coventry in the table but there is no doubting it is the home side here who have the positivity and momentum.

Cleverley is under huge pressure with just one win in seven now and rumours the Watford board are considering his future.

    Bristol City 2-1 Blackburn Rovers

A huge three points for City.

Scott Twine's free-kick gave them an early lead only for Ashton Gate old boy Andreas Weimann to level before the break.

Nahki Wells, on as a substitute, had already had one effort cleared off the line before racing on to Joe Williams' pass to convert.

It's one win from seven for the visitors now and a Lancashire derby with Preston to come next.
