Arsenal think they are ahead as Gabriel Martinelli taps in from Bukayo Saka's cross, but Martinelli was in an offside position.

Anthony Gordon has not stopped moving the whole game. He always tries to get himself in the right position and tries really hard to get Newcastle going in the final third. It's probably apt that he was on the end of that cross.

It's a terrific finish and exactly what this crowd wanted.

    Newcastle 1-0 Benfica

Anthony Gordon in the Champions League this season:

    One goal against Barcelona.

Two goals against Union Saint Gilloise.

    One goal against Benfica

  4. PSV equalisepublished at 20:36 BST 21 October

    PSV 1-1 Napoli

    Forget that.

PSV quickly cancel it out and it's an unfortunate own goal for Alessandro Buongiorno, who tries to clear the cross and doesn't seem to know much about where the ball is as it pings off the back of his head and into his own net.

  5. Copenhagen equalisepublished at 20:36 BST 21 October

    FC Copenhagen 1-1 Borussia Dortmund

Moments after Borussia Dortmund went close to adding a second, the hosts equalise.

There's a bit of a scramble inside the box after Gregor Kobel made a save but the ball then deflects off Waldemar Anton and into his own net.

It had felt remarkably tense inside St James' Park - but not anymore. That was just what Newcastle United needed.

There lies the value of Jacob Murphy, the recalled winger, who is able to put the ball into a really dangerous area - just as he did on so many occasions last season.

And Anthony Gordon is there to finish.

The forward is enjoying playing in the Champions League. He has now scored four goals in three games in the competition and his name is being sung by all four corners of the stadium.

  7. McTominay puts Napoli in frontpublished at 20:34 BST 21 October

    PSV 0-1 Napoli

The visitors take the lead in Eindhoven and it's Scott McTominay's bullet header that gives Napoli the advantage.

A good ball from Leonardo Spinazzola and the former Manchester United man rises highest.

He can't stop scoring in the Champions League!

Newcastle get the breakthrough as Anthony Gordon side-foots home after connecting with Jacob Murphy's early ball.

The roof is off and Newcastle's tails are up.

Gordon, by the way, now has four goals in the Champions League this season.

  9. Postpublished at 20:32 BST 21 October

    Newcastle 0-0 Benfica

This might be goalless but it's a fascinating watch. Benfica have not come to defend and are going for it. Newcastle are being roared forward by their fans at every opportunity.

  10. Postpublished at 20:31 BST 21 October

    Villarreal 0-1 Man City

A heavy touch from Juan Foyth almost proves costly as the Villarreal captain puts the ball straight into the path of Jeremy Doku but the hosts eventually clear the danger.

Viktor Gyokeres and Jose Gimenez are having quite a physical battle.

Gimenez just pushed the Arsenal forward to the ground and they're having words while play continues.

    Arsenal 0-0 Atletico Madrid

Arsenal living a little dangerously in defence as Julian Alvarez is allowed space to get a shot off and it goes just wide of the far post.

Alvarez then runs at the Arsenal defence moments later to get into the box, but can't get a shot off.

  14. GREAT SAVE!published at 20:29 BST 21 October

    Newcastle 0-0 Benfica

Now a lovely move involving Anthony Gordon and Bruno Guimaraes, who feeds Jacob Murphy but the ball runs away from the Newcastle man. Newcastle are coming at Benfica in waves. Visiting keeper Anatoliy Trubin does well to deny Guimaraes from close range.

Guimaraes thought he was about to score.

Pape Gueye has a go from range, it's a powerful strike but doesn't have much bend on it and doesn't trouble Gianluigi Donnarumma.

As he proved against my team Everton at the weekend, a great striker is worth their weight in gold and can decide games. Haaland is one such example! Unbelievable consistency

    Joshua

Haaland again… he’s carrying that Man City team. The rest aren’t very good but as long as he’s scoring it doesn’t matter. they are as close to being a one man team as it’s possible to be

    Newcastle 0-0 Benfica

    Goodness me.

Belgium winger Dodi Lukebakio takes one look up and curls a delicious attempt from 20 yards. It clatters against Nick Pope's post.

Newcastle immediately respond to that by going close themselves, Jacob Murphy firing narrowly wide from distance.
