Re John Potts - it's called rotation. Amorim has started to settle on his preferred team, but this is an opportunity to rest some players and give others a chance to prove they can contribute to the team.

  2. 'We need to start doing that without Sir Alex'published at 19:33 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January

FCSB v Man Utd (20:00 GMT)

United boss Ruben Amorim says it is "really important" to beat FCSB because avoiding the play-offs "would be massive" for resting players - as they'd skip out two games in February.

"It is not a crisis but it is a problem because this club is a massive club," he said of United's struggles.

"It was 27 years with the same person and with him in charge of everything, so we need to start doing that without Sir Alex and just with a small help from him."

Romaare at risk of being eliminated from the first round group/league phase of major European competition for the first time since 2014-15 in the Champions League.

They have never fallen at the first hurdle in the Uefa Cup/Europa League before but despite losing against AZ Alkmaar, a week ago, are in relatively good form.

They are unbeaten in their last six league matches in Serie A having bounced back from a shaky start to the season under Claudio Ranieri, who was appointed in November as the club's third manager this season.

Not to jinx anyone, but as a Spurs fan, it's pretty nerve-wracking wondering every game which player is going to get injured. I wonder if Van de Ven is possibly being rushed back and susceptible to getting injured again? Hope not!

I had to type out the teams in those tables manually so if you see any typos in there, you're just going to have to deal with it. I'm not doing a new table if I've spelt Midtjylland or Union Saint-Gilloise wrong.

    Lazio are already through.

As things stand Eintracht Frankfurt, Athletic Bilbao, Manchester United, Lyon, Tottenham, Anderlecht and FCSB would all join them in the last 16.

But there are seven teams - including Rangers - who are within three points of eighth-placed FCSB so still dreaming of skipping the play-off round.

Ferencvaros v AZ Alkmaar today has an Irish feel to it.

The Republic of Ireland's all-time top scorer Robbie Keane was named boss of Hungarian side Ferencvaros earlier this month, while current Irish international Troy Parrott plays up front for Dutch side AZ Alkmaar (but is on the bench today).

The pair are both Dubliners who played for Tottenham - and Keane was the national team's assistant boss when Parrott made his Ireland debut in 2019.

"I speak to him a lot," Keane said. "I am always giving him advice. I won’t be giving him any advice tomorrow, I’ll be giving my defenders advice on how to play against him.

"I totally respect him, it shows character to get out of your comfort zone. I think more people should do it.

“People are scared to go abroad because of the language barrier or it’s a new place. Don’t be. Dive into it. You never know.

“Look at Troy. I can see him going again to a top team in the next few years.”

Amorim just seems to pick 11 names out of a hat and expect them to play to his system, no real settled players in any position, not sure anybody knows what he's trying to acheive, even himself

Spurs really need a good performance tonight. Looking at the team sheet Micky van de Ven being back is crucial for them, Ange Postecoglou will have been crossing his fingers that him and Cristian Romero will be back fit soon. Their season is falling off a cliff and he is struggling.

In Ruben Amorim and Ange Postecoglou we are seeing guys that are really stubborn and steadfast in what they want to do, but in the short term you have to be flexible.

They are not doing what I think is best for the players at the moment. In the short term you need results. Long term you can look at the vision but in the short term results are the most important.

Unfortunately, Rashford has been used as an example.

It is not that difficult [to get back in favour]. But for whatever reason Marcus Rashford is playing up.

Rashford does have a problem – whether you like it or not.

The other thing we all know Rashford was a wonderful footballer, and probably still is.

Amorim coming out and saying these things – it is not doing Rashford any favours for people who want to sign him.

Ruben Amorim has set his precedent, without a doubt.

The best thing for Marcus Rashford is to move, but what’s his ambitions?

Rashford is too good of a player to be excluded from a squad.

Every day you have to apply yourself and what Amorim is saying is Marcus is not doing that at this level.

We know his potential is there as we've seen it before.

He's not a young boy anymore. He's experienced at this level.

  17. It's really sad it will end like this - Rooneypublished at 19:01 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January

FCSB v Man Utd (20:00 GMT)

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney says it is "really sad" to see Marcus Rashford's time at the club apparently ending like this.

Speaking on Sky's Stick to Football Podcast, Rooney says he has told Rashford to "leave the club" because he "needs a fresh start".

"I was surprised when this started two years ago, now I'm not," said Rooney.

"Because whatever is going on in his life or at Manchester United, he's not the same, he's not him.

"I think it's really sad that a local lad from Manchester... I was at the academy presentation day with my kids the other day and they're talking about the history of the club, and Marcus is on videos there when he's a kid. And to see how it ends like this..."

Former United defender Gary Neville said Amorim's actions are part of a "business play".

"I believe Amorim wants the money back for Marcus and he's said that to probably shine a light on him and get him out the club," said Neville.

"They're probably asking Marcus at this time to take a wage cut to leave the club.

"They don't want to subsidise the wages to a new club, so I suspect it's a brutal blow on him for them to say 'look there's no future for you here, we need you out'.

"It's a business play as well as an honesty play."

We can look at things in terms of the recency of losing Harry Kane and Son Heung-min getting to the stage now where he is a bit older, and say that they maybe papered over the cracks a little bit.

I also think Daniel Levy has done a great job in getting Tottenham to where they are, building the stadium and increasing the size of the brand if you like. But it has felt that since we got to that point we've not really built on it at all. And now other clubs are starting to catch up to us.

  19. Tottenham team news: Van de Ven startspublished at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January

    Tottenham v Elfsborg (20:00 GMT)

The big - and very welcome - news from the Tottenham dressing room is the return of Netherlands defender Micky van de Ven who has been out with an injury since 8 December.

There are three changes from the side that started the 2-1 home defeat to Leicester last Sunday.

Also coming into the side is goalkeeper Brandon Austin for the ineligible Antonin Kinsky and 17-year-old Mikey Moore for Dejan Kulusevski.

Van de Ven is in for Radu Dragusin.

Tottenham XI: Austin, Porro, Van de Ven, Davies, Gray, Bergvall, Bentancur, Sarr, Moore, Richarlison, Son.

Subs: Forster, Whiteman, Cassanova, Dragusin, Hardy, Bissouma, Olusesi, Kyerematen, Ajayi, Kulusevski, Scarlett, Lankshear.

    Tottenham XI

Elfsborg, who started out in the competition at the first qualifying round stage, stick with the same 11 which beat Nice 1-0 last week.

Elfsborg XI: Petterson, Holmen, Henriksson, Yegbe, Hedlund, B Zeneli, Thomasen, Hult, Rapp, Abdullai, Qasem.

Subs: Uppenberg, Sorensen, Aronsson, A Zeneli, Gudmundsson, Holten, Larsson, Frick, Kaib, Richtner, Ostman, Ibrahim.

Ruben Amorim says there is a place in the team for Rashford if he changes

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim says there is a place in the team for Marcus Rashford but he "needs to change".

The 27-year-old England forward hasn't played for the club for seven weeks now - and is not in today's squad.

"Imagine a talent like Rashford, our team should be so much better with him - but he has to change," Amorim said.

"If he changes, we are more than welcome [to include him] - and we need it. But in this moment we have to set some standards. We are waiting for Rashford, if he wants it really bad.

"You [the media] want to make it personal, I have nothing against Marcus, but I have to make the same rules for everybody.

"We need goals, we need [players who can go] one against one, we need threat in the final third."
