  2. The value of 'balance' at Man Utdpublished at 18:45 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January

FCSB v Man Utd (20:00 GMT)

    Nedum Onuoha
    BBC Sport pundit

With Ruben Amorim having had more games and training sessions, you can see what they are trying to do in defence, but in attack, it has not been smooth.

The manager probably knows why, but with his setup, some are wondering whether he has the right players in the right positions. To a certain extent they do, but the players are learning how to do it because it is different for quite a few of them.

One thing I am always big on is balance. The value of a left-footed centre-half, for example, means one side of the field is not completely closed up as opposed to when a right-sided player is in there.

Diogo Dalot has done a good job but his tendency, like every right-footed player is come back inside. You find balance where there is a right-footer on the right and a left-footer on the left and the pitch becomes bigger.

Even though it seems like a really simple thing, it can make a huge difference to the way the team attacks.

With wing-back Patrick Dorgu possibly joining, these margins make a difference. If he settles, then defensively they can continue being relatively strong, but it would provide a different option in attack. If he is good on the ball, then it allows for more progressive passes, more ways to break the lines and to get at the opposition.

It is not just about who United bring in that is important, but who might leave too.

If everybody is available, they have one of the biggest squads, but not everybody has the same sort of impact. You do not want players in the squad in the second half of the season who are unhappy because that can very quickly upset the way things are within the dressing room.

Amorim will know the value of having good vibes in the squad and people who pull in the same direction.

  3. How many dead rubbers?published at 18:41 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January

Just like in the Champions League last night, there are only two dead rubbers - between eliminated teams - in Slavia Prague v Malmo and Dynamo Kyiv v RFS.

You'll forgive us if we're not peppering you with updates from either of those tonight.

  4. Who is through?published at 18:39 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January

Unbeaten Lazio are the only team who have booked their place in the last 16 with a game to spare.

Anderlecht, Athletic Bilbao, AZ Alkmaar, Bodo/Glimt, Eintracht Frankfurt, FCSB, Galatasaray, Lyon, Manchester United, Olympiacos, Rangers, Tottenham, Union SG and Viktoria Plzen are all in the play-offs at least - and all those teams can finish in the top eight.

Dynamo Kyiv, Ludogorets, Malmo, Nice, Qarabag, RFS (from Riga) and Slavia Prague are all out.

  5. How does this work?published at 18:36 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January

If you followed any of the Champions League mayhem last night, this is the exact same format.

This is the final of eight rounds of league phase games - with all 18 games happening at the same time. The top eight go into the last 16 and the teams ranked ninth to 24th going into a play-off round. The bottom eight teams are out of Europe.

Depending on where you finish, you will know the two possible teams you could play.

  6. What's at stake for British clubs?published at 18:33 Greenwich Mean Time 30 January

Manchester United, Tottenham and Rangers are all through to the play-offs at the very least.

A late Bruno Fernandes goal gave Manchester United a 2-1 victory against Rangers last week.

That moved United up to fourth in the league table with 15 points, meaning victory at Romanian side FCSB will cement a top-eight finish. A draw might be enough depending on results elsewhere.

Tottenham, meanwhile, put themselves on the verge of a place in the knockouts by winning 3-2 at Hoffenheim.

Spurs are sixth on 14 points, meaning only a win against Elfsborg would guarantee a place in the last 16.

Rangers may have suffered frustration with the late Fernandes goal, but they have still done enough to secure at least a place in the play-off round.

They are 13th on 11 points, three ahead of Porto in 25th place.

But the combination of fixtures on the final day means that the Ibrox side have done enough before welcoming Belgians Union Saint-Gilloise. A win for either side could - if other results fall kindly - lift them into the top eight.
