AFC Wimbledon's 2-1 win sees them storm into second but for how long?

It is so tight at the top. At least, for everyone who isn't Walsall.

The league leaders get to kick-off the first Saturday of the year when they take on Cheltenham Town in one of the two 12:30 GMT starts, while tonight's participants have to wait until Sunday until they get the chance to go again.

And, of course, we will be here to see you through it all.

    See you on the weekend!

After a decent first half, Newport weren't able to make any inroads on the table with their 2-1 loss to AFC Wimbledon keeping them in 18th place.

Not shown in this bottom 10 is Gillingham but after spending much of the beginning of this season on the graphic for the top half, another loss for them sees them dangerously close to joining this picture some time in the near future.

  3. Dons go secondpublished at 21:57 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January

    Top ten in League Two

A second successive win for AFC Wimbledon pushes them up to second place in League Two albeit still a massive 12 points behind the leaders, Walsall.

Just three points now cover second place down to eighth with a real scrap developing for those two other automatic promotion spots because, let's face it, it's going to require an almighty collapse from the Saddlers not to take one of the three.

  4. 'They have nothing to show'published at 21:51 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January

A sorry night for Mark Bonner and Gillingham.

They were fighting for so long to get back into the game, but the third goal killed it.

Boos are emanating from the home end, for those who battled for the side in blue and white, they have nothing to show.

  5. 'Well and truly beaten'published at 21:51 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January

    FT: Gillingham 0-3 Bromley

    Peter Lloyd
    BBC Radio Kent

Damage was done in the first-half.

The cheers are from the Bromley fans, a thoroughly good performance from them.

We've got to look at the longer context that it's now 11 points from 15 games, that's relegation form.

Tonight, Bromley have come here on a good run, they knew what they wanted to do.

In the attacking positions, they had the energy, pace, and confidence.

From a Gills point of view, the penalty summed it up, well and truly beaten.

This happens in football, you have to try and ride it out.

    Gillingham 0-3 Bromley

A brilliant night for Bromley who complete a league double over Gillingham.

Goals from Louis Dennis, Jude Arthurs and Kamarl Grant get the job done.

The strikes from Dennis and Arthurs broke the back of it in the first-half before they grabbed a third when Gillingham were having their best period of the game.

Just to compound things for the home side, Elliott Nevitt missed an 88th minute penalty after Josh Andrews had been fouled as he sent his spot-kick over the bar.

That's 12 unbeaten for Bromley in the league while for Gillingham, pre-season promotion favourites, it's three defeats on the bounce in which they've also failed to score.

This was not how the home owners had planned things this season.

Whisper it but only the leaders Walsall are on a longer unbeaten run than Bromley in League Two and they're only three points short of the play-offs.

Michael Cheek has had a quiet night for Bromley and he takes a breather with Olufela Olomola on for the final few minutes.

It's more like a lap of honour for the visitors though and there won't be many home fans left to watch - they're off into the Medway night.

  10. FULL-TIMEpublished at 21:38 Greenwich Mean Time 2 January

    Newport 1-2 AFC Wimbledon

A strong second half from the Dons moves them into second place in the League Two table while Newport's late surge can only see them lessen the damage.

It took just two minutes for AFC Wimbledon to take the lead after the break when Josh Kelly capitalised on Newport defensive errors to score an opener.

He then turned provider as he cut the ball to Romaine Sawyers following a counter-attack to double their score.

The Exiles did get the chance to strike back when Oliver Greaves netted a set piece, but time had ran out for the Welsh side to claw back a point and the opportunity to drag further away from a relegation scrap goes begging.

    Oliver Greaves (92 mins)

    Though stranger things have happened...

The Exiles are awarded a free kick and it falls nicely for Oliver Greaves to fire it into the corner with his left foot.

A consolation goal or the beginning of a breath-taking comeback?

Wimbledon substitute Aron Sasu wants to make a quick impression but his shot goes flying high.

    Gillingham 0-3 Bromley

That is surely three points for Bromley.

They have had nothing in this second half, but the three points will be heading back to Hayes Lane for Andy Woodman's men.

It was fired across goal, for Kamarl Grant to tap home, it came during Gillingham's best spell in this match.
