  3. Can Sutton's predictions beat Coldplay's?published at 15:55 British Summer Time 4 October

All eyes will be on Manchester United when they go to Aston Villa on Sunday, but will the result decide the future of under-pressure manager Erik ten Hag?

"Which United will we see?" said BBC Sport's football expert Chris Sutton. "Will it be the United who turned up against Tottenham? Because if they play as badly as that again, they will get a pasting.

"In the past United have always pulled a performance out of the bag when Ten Hag has really needed it. It is critical for him that the same happens again this time."

Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches this season, against a variety of guests.

For week seven, he takes on Will Champion and Jonny Buckland from Coldplay, whose latest album, Moon Music, is out on Friday.

You can check out their predictions here.

  5. Promising start, then a decline as rivals outperform himpublished at 15:45 British Summer Time 4 October

Ten Hag took charge at United in the summer of 2022 - the latest man charged with restoring the 20-time English champions to the top of the pile.

United finished third in his first season, and also won the EFL Cup.

But how has the Dutchman fared when compared with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp - two men similarly tasked with bringing glory back to expectant clubs?

Arteta and Klopp took over mid-season with their clubs 10th in the table. Ten Hag, meanwhile, inherited a team that had finished sixth the previous season.

Ten Hag had the brightest start - and restored United to the top four in his first season - before a clear decline that has continued beyond his second campaign.

Klopp's trajectory was good once he got his first season out of the way - having reached the top four, he remained there for a season and a half before elevating Liverpool to title challengers.

Of the three managers, Arteta needed more time. His upward trajectory from 60 games onwards has been remarkable - closely following Klopp from the 80-game mark.

  6. 'We will improve'published at 15:40 British Summer Time 4 October

    Manchester United

Manchester United drew 3-3 against Porto on Thursday evening in the Europa League. Here is what Erik Ten Hag had to say after the match.

"We will get there," Ten Hag told TNT Sports. "Don't judge us in this moment, judge us at the end of the season.

"We are in the process, we will improve. We have had two seasons where we have reached finals, we will continue and fight."

  7. 'We are in there together'published at 15:37 British Summer Time 4 October

    Manchester United

Earlier, Erik ten Hag spoke about needing patience as his struggling squad head to Aston Villa at the weekend looking to secure a much-needed win.

"We are in there together, the ownership, leadership team, the staff," Ten Hag said.

"I appointed new staff. We bought new young players, and we have to integrate them, like Manuel Ugarte. I know in top football, usually you don't get time. They have to perform immediately, but that's not always realistic. He has to get used to our game model, to his team-mates, to the intensity of the Premier League. It needs time."

  8. Ten Hag and Man Utd - what do the stats tell us?published at 15:31 British Summer Time 4 October

Manchester United are 13th in the Premier League having lost three of their opening six games, and were minutes away from another damaging defeat by Porto in the Europa League on Thursday.

United's pressing and team structure has drawn much criticism over the past year.

But looking at the stats going back further, the lack of goals compared to their rivals stands out.

United are 10th for goals scored - 84 shy of their city rivals and behind Brighton and Brentford since Ten Hag's appointment.

They do, however, have the fifth best defence. But still they would need to tighten up to the tune of 36 goals to have been as strong as City during Ten Hag's time.

  9. Ratcliffe - decision on Ten Hag is not my callpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 4 October
    Breaking

    Manchester United

Some new quotes just in to us from the Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who has told our sports editor Dan Roan that a decision on Erik ten Hag's future is not his call.

Asked if he has faith in the Red Devils' boss, he said: “I don’t want to answer that question…I like Erik. I think he’s a very good coach but at the end of the day it’s not my call, it’s the management team that’s running Manchester United that have to decide how we best run the team in many different respects.

"But that team that’s running Manchester United has only been together since June or July. They weren’t there in January, February, March or April – [CEO] Omar [Berrada], [Sporting Director] Dan Ashworth - they only arrived in July.

"They’ve only been there…you can count it in weeks almost - they’ve not been there a long time so they need to take stock and make some sensible decisions.

"Our objective is very clear - we want to take Manchester United back to where it should be, and it’s not there yet, obviously - that’s very clear.”

[Trevoh] Chalobah has one more training week with us and he looked quite good. He looks close to start.

  13. Guardiola responds to fan 'stay' bannerpublished at 15:08 British Summer Time 4 October

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola joked he would reimburse fans after hearing they are set to display a new banner asking him to stay at the club.

The 1894 Group, who organise displays of flags and banners at Etihad Stadium, raised more than £1,000 in just 24 hours to create a banner.

It is due to be displayed in the South Stand tomorrow, when Fulham visit at 15:00 BST, and will read "Pep Guardiola, we want you to stay" in his native Catalan tongue.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner expects midfielder Adam Wharton to withdraw from the England U21 squad ahead of their games this month.

The 20-year-old midfielder withdrew from the Young Lions squad in September as he manages an ongoing groin problem and looks set to do the same this month.

The England U21 side have EURO 2025 qualifiers against Ukraine and Azerbaijan this month and Wharton has been named by Ben Futcher in a 24-man squad.

Wharton had a short pre-season after being included in the England senior squad that reached the final of Euro 2024 and is managing his groin issue as he works his way back to full fitness.

"We are in talks with the U21s and he will go there for a medical assessment but we expect that he goes back again because he struggles and is still struggling. It is managing him as good as possible." Glasner said.

"We know it’s not the best situation but there is not a moment where we can give him three, four or five weeks break.

"It is really just managing and therefore it could help us if the England U21 supports him as well."

Aston Villa v Man Utd (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Nick Mashiter
    BBC Sport football news reporter

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery believes under presser Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag remains a winner - despite his troubles at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman takes United to Villa Park on Sunday after Harry Maguire's last-gasp leveller rescued a 3-3 draw in their Europa League game at Porto on Thursday.

United blew a 2-0 lead to trail 3-2 which looked like pushing ten Hag closer to the brink.

The visitors are 13th in the Premier League, winning two of their six games, with Villa - who beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday - fifth.

Emery said: "I respect him a lot, I have to respect him because he has beaten me more than I’ve beaten him. He’s a winner, they won the FA Cup. He is a very good coach. The demands there are huge demands but he is doing a process.

"We won the first match when I arrived here but since we have lost four matches against them. They are a winning team, they have an experienced coach, experienced players and the club is usually a winning club.

"They are still being winners, they won the FA Cup and they are not getting consistent good results in the Premier League but playing only one match they can exploit their capacity and skill.

"I respect them and I will prepare for the match more than how I prepared against Bayern."

Crystal Palace v Liverpool (Sat, 5 Oct 12:30 BST)

    Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner on Adam Wharton's injury:

"We are in talks with [England] U21’s, he is still struggling. Its not the best situation. We have to manage it. It would help if the England U21’s do what they can to get him ready.

"He had a great game at Everton and a very good training week. We know his situation and we have to look after him. It’s day to day with his injury but our great medical department are treating him very well."

In top football you don't get time. They have to perform immediately but that is not always realistic. It needs time.

"We have more positions where we need time. I was pleased with the return of Hojlund. Hopefully he is now fit and keeps improving in his fitness levels and has a more consistent fit season that will help us.

"More areas where we will improve definitely and this team can grow and improve. We will see where we are at the end of the season."
