    Aston Villa

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery on managing expectations now they are in the Champions League and on being favourites to beat Manchester United: "We are not favourites to be in the top seven of the Premier League. We want to be a contender and we are in the process of getting points. We will have to see where we are in January/February. Winning matches is very important.

"I am learning every day but we want to have a strong mentality and play football that demands the opponent.

"Sunday is a huge match for us after Bayern Munich because we are playing the best team in the world. United are not in the Champions League, they are in Europa, but they are a team with quality players and coach.

"We will need the support like Wednesday at Villa Park. I have no doubt that they will be there and try to transmit their energy to help us get three points."

Lens and former Southampton defender Kevin Danso has been cleared to resume his career after further tests on his heart.

A proposed move to Serie A side Roma collapsed on 30 August after apparent irregularities were detected in the 26-year-old’s medical.

At the time, Danso said he was ‘surprised’ at the development as no previous issues around his heart had been raised.

The Austria international has not played since but has now been given the all-clear.

“On a comprehensive invasive electrical study of Kevin’s heart, no heart muscle scar or electrical abnormalities were detected that would lead to or support the development of dangerous arrhythmias,” said a statement from Danso’s doctors Professor Sanjay Sharma and Dr Magdi Saba.

“Based on the available data, we would consider him fit to play competitive football.”

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery on facing Manchester United and an under the pressure Erik ten Hag: "I have a lot of respect for him. We have lost the last four home and away games to them and they are a winning team. They beat Manchester City to win the FA Cup.

"The club is usually a winning club. They are not getting consistent form in the Premier League but I have had to think about how I prepare for this match more than the Bayern Munich [game]."

If there’s one thing Liverpool boss Arne Slot will not miss during the international break, it’s questions about the contracts of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk.

The deals of the trio run out next summer and Slot laughed off being asked about the subject again and gave no indication on any developments.

He also played down his side facing a trip to Crystal Palace in the 12:30 BST kick-off on Saturday following a Champions League outing on Wednesday night.

“If 12:30 was a difficult time to perform then I’m a really stupid manager because we train at 12 o’clock every day,” he said at the club’s training ground on Friday.

Liverpool are top of the Premier League after six games but Slot knows the fixture list has been on the kinder side so far and, with tougher tests to come, added that no-one at Anfield will be getting carried away.

“No, we are Liverpool,” said the Dutchman. “Players here are used to being top of the table. It would be very weird if a player at Liverpool is with his head in the clouds.

“If we don’t play well tomorrow then people will probably come up with that instead of saying that Palace played well or we maybe did other things wrong.

“These players are experienced enough to understand the league table of six games with the schedule we had compared to some other teams.

“Also, Virgil, Alisson, Trent, Robbo, Mo, they won the league and Champions League here so for them it’s a nice thing but I’m not expecting them to watch their mobile phones every second of the day seeing they are top of the table.”

  5. Villa have 'to be demanding and don’t relax'published at 14:12 British Summer Time 4 October

Aston Villa v Man Utd (Sun, 14:00 BST)

    Aston Villa

Following on from Aston Villa's victory over Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday, boss Unai Emery talks of the progress since he arrived and his process: "In this process I am increasing more or less everything. The club’s committed to getting better in everything and that is clear.

"We got Conference League and now we have Champions League. But being consistent is the most important thing and it is difficult to be competitive and consistent in Europe and Premier League.

"We enjoyed Wednesday a lot and we want to match it. But there’s no change in my mind. I have ambitions with this club since I arrived. Today it is the same and that is to be demanding in every match.

"We are creating a lot of success so my expectation is now to keep it. Be demanding and don’t relax. I want to control that with the players and the club.

"I am pushing the players to get the best from their performances consistently. Now I will work to win on Sunday."

I don't think Chelsea can compete - Maresca on challenging Manchester City and Arsenal

Enzo Maresca says he is "convinced" Chelsea cannot compete for "big things" with Manchester City and Arsenal this season.

The Italian manager has had an good start at Stamford Bridge, winning seven of his 10 matches, overseeing a run of 27 goals and seeing Chelsea rise into fourth place, just two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

However, Maresca has urged caution about his team's ability to win major trophies during his first season.

“I really don’t think we can compete with City or Arsenal," he said.

"I really don’t think that because we are not ready. The reason is that City has worked with the same manager for nine years and Arsenal for five years. If you want to compete for big things you need that time."

  20. Glasner has questions to answer on formpublished at 13:21 British Summer Time 4 October

    Alex Howell
BBC football news reporter at Crystal Palace training ground

Crystal Palace go into the game in completely different form to their opponents Liverpool.

Arne Slot's side are top of the table and have adjusted to the change in playing style seamlessly.

Oliver Glasner transformed Crystal Palace after he came in in February but he has struggled to replicate that form so far this season.

The Eagles are in the relegation zone and winless in the opening six games.

Glasner is still trying to work out how to get the best out of £25m signing Eddie Nketiah whilst also trying to find Daichi Kamada's best position.

There is an international break after this match and Glasner will be hoping the Eagles can go into it with some positive feeling.
