In the first half, Marcus Rashford scored and provided an assist before being replaced at half-time by Alejandro Garnacho.

On the ball, Rashford completed all three of his attempted dribbles and won all four of the duels he was involved in.

Rashford attempted 19 passes in his 45 minutes outing, completing 16 of them at a success rate of 84%.

Statistics website Sofascore gave Rashford a match rating of 8.6 out of 10, making him the site's player of the match.

Marcus Rashford had arguably been Manchester United's best player in the first half at Porto, but was substituted at half time.

The forward scored Manchester United's opener and provided the assist for their second.

Erik ten Hag said rotating his squad - with Aston Villa coming up on Sunday - played a part in the decision.

"Yeah, but [replacement Alejandro] Garnacho was my best player on Sunday by far and also in many other games," he said.

"I think in the season, as I assess it so far, he is bringing us so far the offensive threat by creating chances, assists, also scoring.

"Garnacho we also have to play as well and we have two very good players over that side."

Porto's first goal came from a cross from Rashford's side of the pitch.

Asked if the decision had anything to do with the forward's role in Porto's first goal, Ten Hag said: "As I say, I have to watch it back and I think over the left side definitely we didn't defend well tonight. "Marcus also played a part in this but, as I say, it had to do with Garnacho and nothing against Rashy."

  3. 'No guarantee anyone else would have done better than Ten Hag'published at 08:34 British Summer Time

    Simon Stone Q&A

PS asks: "Hi Simon, the two people most responsible for hiring and firing managers at Man Utd, CEO Berrada and DoF Ashworth, were presumably not part of the decision to stick with Ten Hag as they joined after. Do you think it would have been a different decision if those two were involved? And would it have a bearing on ETH's future now?"

Simon Stone says: "When I – along with a few other journalists – spoke to Berrada and Ashworth on the morning of the Liverpool game, they said they played no part in the decision to keep Ten Hag but were supportive of it. We have no choice other than to take those comments at face value. The key issue is who would have replaced Ten Hag? United resolved there was no-one around who was better. Would Berrada and Ashworth have unearthed someone United had not already looked at? That seems doubtful to me.

"A senior executive at another Premier League club told me in the summer that no managerial appointment was without risk. You can only do your due diligence, make what you feel is an honest decision and hope it works out. Ten Hag had just won the FA Cup, thrillingly, against Manchester City, there is no guarantee anyone else would have done any better this season."

It wasn't just a difficult night for Manchester United on the pitch last night, they also had to deal with a major off-field issue.

One-hundred and eighty fans scheduled to make the trip to Porto on a flight with the club's official travel partner yesterday never got off the ground in Manchester.

A mechanical issue delayed the arrival of the aircraft in Manchester and fog in Porto delayed its departure past the latest possible time to reach the game.

"Manchester United is very sorry for the disappointment experienced by the impacted fans," the club said in a statement.

"They will receive a full refund and as a thank you for their continued support a complimentary ticket for our Europa League home game against Bodo/Glimt."

  5. Battling Larne beaten by Molde on European debutpublished at 08:22 British Summer Time

    Molde 3-0 Larne

Larne's historic European debut ended in defeat as Molde ran out 3-0 winners in the Uefa Conference League.

Tiernan Lynch's side were making history by becoming the first Irish Premiership team to play in the league stage of European competition.

It has been a remarkable rise for Larne, who were playing in the second tier in Northern Ireland five years ago and have built to become-back-to-back Irish Premiership champions.

Larne produced a strong opening 45 minutes on their European debut in Norway and frustrated Molde, who reached the last-16 of the Conference League last season.

However, their resolve was broken in the 51st minute when Molde captain Magnus Wolff Eikrem fired into the top corner from Kristian Eriksen's cut back.

Larne settled and showed more ambition as the game progressed, but Ola Brynhildsen got Molde's second with 12 minutes to play when Shaun Want's attempted tackle fell into the path of the forward, who kept his composure to curl an effort into the bottom corner.

There was a late blow for Larne when substitute Conor McKendry was shown a straight red card for a cynical tackle on Isak Amundsen, and the hosts capitalised when Frederik Ihler slotted home with the final kick of the game.

While Larne leave Norway empty handed, Lynch's call for his players to show they belong at this level were answered and they can take confidence from their European debut.

Cymru Premier champions The New Saints held Serie A giants Fiorentina for 65 minutes before goals from Yacil Adli and substitute Moise Kean broke their resistance in their first Uefa Conference League encounter.

Craig Harrison's side were competing in a group game in Europe for the first time and for over an hour they looked like they could produce a seismic shock in Tuscany.

The visitors' excellent resistance was finally broken when Adli took advantage of TNS failing to clear as he turned and fired home in a crowded penalty area.

The second goal followed four minutes later as former Everton striker Kean slammed home from close-range at the second attempt.

Kean also missed a sitter and TNS goalkeeper Connor Roberts made several fine saves as the Welsh side impressed on their big night.

  7. 'Why would Klopp risk his reputation?'published at 08:10 British Summer Time

    Simon Stone Q&A

Jason asks: "Jurgen Klopp is available - could Manchester United bring him out of retirement?"

Simon Stone says: "Hiya Jason. Is this a serious question? There is an absolutely legitimate argument about why United didn’t work harder to get Klopp when he was at Borussia Dortmund because he always struck me as having the perfect personality to be a Manchester United manager, which is a tough job for anyone. However, he went to Liverpool, one of the greatest clubs in the world, and built his legacy in English football there. Why would he risk his reputation as a manager and destroy it as a club legend by moving to Old Trafford?"

  8. Youthful Spurs win at Ferencvaros in Europa Leaguepublished at 08:04 British Summer Time

Tottenham made it two victories from two Europa League games as their youthful side edged past Ferencvaros in Hungary.

Ange Postecoglou included four teenagers in his starting line-up – winger Mikey Moore, 17, midfielder Lucas Bergvall, 18, defender Archie Gray, 18, and 19-year-old striker Will Lankshear, who was making his senior debut.

Goals from Pape Sarr, 22, and Brennan Johnson, 23, gave them the win, with the teenagers playing key roles.

"I thought Mikey was outstanding," said Postecoglou. "It’s brilliant for a 17-year-old to play 90-plus minutes in a European away tie. He handled it superbly. I kind of knew he would and it’ll help his growth as a footballer.

"If you look at the Premier League, how many 17-year-olds are actually contributing and Mikey is already, which shows he’s got something special - but we’ve got to be really careful how we develop that."

On the other youngsters, Postecoglou was also pleased with how they performed and added: "They’re part of our first-team squad, not because I want young players, it's because they've earned that spot. We can't discount the fact Archie is 18, Lucas is 18.

"Archie was brilliant. We asked him to play in two different positions and it's incredible how he adjusts. Lucas worked hard and Will was unlucky with a couple of moments when we could have got a goal.

“These guys are there because they've earned their spot, but they're an important part of our development."

  9. 'The recruitment has been flawed'published at 07:58 British Summer Time

    Simon Stone Q&A

Erik ten Hag walks on the pitch after the 3-3 draw with PortoImage source, Getty Images

Paul asks: "I have been a Manchester United fan all my life. Since Fergie left, we have lurched from one manager to the next. Simon, what is wrong at Man Utd? It's more than the manager but clearly INEOS can't continue with Erik ten Hag and be seen to be competent owners. Is it: The manager, the club culture (the Glazers etc), the players (including the captain), all of the above?"

Simon Stone says: "Well, firstly Paul I think it shows how good Sir Alex Ferguson was. It is a different era and different times but something I was told about Ferguson’s recruitment of players has always stuck with me. He liked good players, but the overriding demand was for players to be good characters. If someone’s character is right, have something to work with. The other way round it detracts from ability. At that level of the game, where all the players are of a really high standard, it makes a big difference.

"However you look at it, the recruitment has been flawed. That predates Ten Hag’s time but it is hard to argue it has got any better. Ten Hag has spoken about last summer, when United made a conscious decision to buy younger players – Rasmus Hojlund is the prime example – who can develop into what United want them to be. That is fine. But you need a team that can deliver now. That is where the measurement of success is."

  10. Hearts strike in 94th minute to beat Dinamo in Conference Leaguepublished at 07:52 British Summer Time

    Dinamo Minsk 1-2 Hearts

Yan Dhanda's 94th-minute header gave managerless Hearts a Conference League win over Dinamo Minsk and brought an end to their dreadful run of form.

It looked certain that Hearts' troubles were set to continue - having gone winless in their previous 10 games - after last Saturday's draw with Ross County confirmed their worst ever start to a season.

The Scottish Premiership side trailed to Steven Alfred's opener in Azerbaijan - the game played in a neutral location due to Belarus' support for Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

But a fortunate own goal off the head of Sergey Politevich had Hearts level and, with seconds remaining, Dhanda was able to glance in Lawrence Shankland's header to secure the win.

  11. 'The only two words that matter are results and time'published at 07:46 British Summer Time

    Simon Stone Q&A

Kenny in Edinburgh asks: "We keep hearing Ten Hag talking about "the process". Does anyone have a clue what this process is? Whatever it is, it's flawed from top to bottom.

Simon Stone says: "Hiya Kenny. Process is a management-speak kind of word isn’t it. The idea is if all the component parts of constructing a team and squad are followed, you will eventually be successful. The problem with ‘process’ is variable can get in the way. Take Leny Yoro. He is a young player of huge promise, with lots of speed and can clearly defend. United followed the process of recruiting young, talented players yet to reach their peak and signed him. Then he got injured and is out for three months. Losing him was not part of the process but it happened. Every club and manager has to deal with stuff like that.

"Ten Hag can talk about the process but the only two words that really matter are results, which he can control, and time, which his bosses do."

  12. Clement laments Rangers profligacy - but are there bigger issues?published at 07:39 British Summer Time

    Rangers 1-4 Lyon

Philippe Clement looks frustrated during Rangers' defeat to LyonImage source, Getty Images

Manager Philippe Clement lamented Rangers' inability to "kill off" chances after his side shipped four goals in a heavy Europa League defeat by Lyon.

Just two days after Celtic's chastening 7-1 loss at Borussia Dortmund, their city rivals also suffered a sobering night as they were outclassed by the Ligue 1 visitors.

Although the Ibrox boss conceded his team "were not sharp enough" defensively, he firstly bemoaned a lack of cutting edge in attack. More glaringly, James Tavernier and Vaclav Cerny both missed glorious opportunities early in the contest.

"The scoreline, we don't reward ourselves clearly," Clement told TNT Sports.

"So you have two 100% chances - the first chances of the game. You need to kill them off. If it's 1-0, 2-0, of course it's a totally different game.

"We go behind by losing balls in places we cannot lose balls and then our defending is not sharp enough.

"In the end we have the same amount of chances as Lyon, same numbers, but the scoreline is clear. And that's the difference in quality and finishing."

Rangers failed to back up their impressive Europa League opening win against Malmo as they were undone by a lethal Lyon at Ibrox.

Tom Lawrence levelled for the hosts inside 14 minutes after Malick Fofana's opener for Lyon four minutes earlier.

Goals in each half for Alexandre Lacazette, and a second for Fofana, sealed a convincing win for the French side.

A Chelsea side showing 11 changes earned a comfortable win over Gent in their opening Conference League match.

Defender Renato Veiga headed in a 12th-minute opener from Mykhailo Mudryk's cross.

Winger Pedro Neto smashed in a near post finish just 49 seconds after half-time after latching on to a long ball down the middle by Axel Disasi.

For a moment, Gent may have felt they were back in the game after a 50th minute header by defender Tsuyoshi Watanabe survived a video assistant referee check for offside to stand.

But that joy was short lived for the travelling Belgians.

Thirteen minutes later, versatile forward Christopher Nkunku latched on to a loose ball to score his seventh goal of the season with a low shot that went through goalkeeper Davy Roef.

Midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who had missed a great chance in the first half, then turned in a finish after Watanabe failed to clear.

Omri Gandelman added a consolation goal after some poor defending down Chelsea's left.

With Manchester United 3-2 down and edging towards what would be another hugely damaging defeat for Erik ten Hag, their under-pressure manager decided it was time to turn to his bench.

Who did he think could grab his side a late equaliser? Which player could become his Mark Robins?

As the clock ticked towards 80 minutes, Ten Hag's answer was both unexpected and unconventional.

Off came centre-halves Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs de Ligt and on came... centre-halves Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire.

"This is the strangest substitution," said former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson on BBC Radio 5 Live when the board went up. "Manchester United are chasing a game with 12 minutes to go!"

    Porto 3-3 Man Utd

Erik ten Hag looks on during Manchester United's 3-3 draw with FC PortoImage source, Getty Images

As the clocked ticked past 90 minutes at Estadio do Dragao, Erik ten Hag seemed to be staring into the abyss.

His Manchester United side had squandered a two-goal lead against Porto and were heading to a morale-sapping defeat.

A defeat that may not have confirmed the end of Ten Hag's time at Old Trafford but would certainly have left him teetering, closer than ever, to the edge.

But before that scenario could become a reality, Harry Maguire leapt to head an equaliser and ease the pressure, if only marginally, on his manager.

"We will get there," Ten Hag told TNT Sports. "Don't judge us in this moment, judge us at the end of the season.

"We are in the process, we will improve. We have had two seasons where we have reached finals, we will continue and fight."

    Porto 3-3 Man Utd

    Harry MaguireImage source, Getty Images

Harry Maguire rescued a dramatic draw for 10-man Manchester United after they had surrendered a two-goal lead - and had Bruno Fernandes sent off - at Porto in the Europa League.

The injury-time effort could prove priceless for under-pressure manager Erik ten Hag, whose side were moments away from their fourth loss in 10 games to start the season.

Instead, substitute Maguire rose highest to meet Christian Eriksen's corner and headed superbly into the bottom corner in the first of five added minutes.

It was a thrilling conclusion to a chaotic encounter at Estadio do Dragao.

Marcus Rashford had given United a seventh-minute lead, driving in from the left, cleverly beating two defenders before his tame near-post shot squirmed past Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

Rasmus Hojlund, starting his first game of the campaign, finished off a swift United attack to double the lead on 20 minutes and put his side in control.

    But Porto came roaring back.
