Graham Carey's penalty opened the scoring for St Johnstone

St Johnstone survived a late Brechin City fightback to open their Scottish League Cup Group F campaign with a narrow victory over the Highland League runners-up.

It took the majority of the first half for the Premiership visitors to break the deadlock as veteran midfielder Graham Carey slotted in a penalty kick.

New captain Kyle Cameron, the on-loan centre-half arrival from Notts County, marked his debut by extending the lead after 65 minutes.

Former Tranent midfielder John Moreland marked his home debut with a 90th-minute goal, but there was not time enough for the hosts to find an equaliser.

In the group's other group, League 2 side East Fife recorded a surprise 3-0 win at home to second-tier Greenock Morton.
