  1. Pars for Scheffler and Hattonpublished at 20:03 British Summer Time 12 April

    Scheffler -6, Hatton -4 (4)

Another serene par for Scottie Scheffler at the fourth.

Wonder how aware he is of what's happening behind?

To be fair, he'll just "stay in his lane" and tick off the holes.

Tyrrell Hatton is still searching for his first birdie of the day.

  2. Here comes Shane!published at 20:00 British Summer Time 12 April

    McCarty -5 Lowry -7 (3)

Shane Lowry's not having his mate Rory McIlroy have all the fun, as he's gone birdie-birdie to get to seven under.

He takes advantage of the short par four by rolling in a lengthy putt for a three and Lowry is showing that he means business today.

  3. Rose saves parpublished at 19:59 British Summer Time 12 April

    Rose -8, DeChambeau -8 (1)

After watching Bryson DeChambeau land his putt, Justin Rose can't respond as he rolls a similar effort four feet beyond the hole, but he holds his nerve to save par coming back.

He's doing well to keep calm as it's all going off around him at Augusta National right now. They do call it moving day after all...

A first fist pump of the day for Rory McIlroy as he judges that chip to perfection from off the back of the second green.

He slaps hands with caddie Harry Diamond and then takes a swig of his drink.

    What a shot.

Amid the madness, Corey Conners quietly pockets a birdie of his own.

    This is fun isn't it?!

  5. McIlroy chips in for eagle!published at 19:55 British Summer Time 12 April

    McIlroy -9, Conners -6 (2)

    Unbelievable from Rory McIlroy!

  6. Postpublished at 19:55 British Summer Time 12 April

    We have a new leader...

  7. Bryson birdie!published at 19:53 British Summer Time 12 April

    Rose -8, DeChambeau -8

Perfect start for Bryson DeChambeau and for all the headlines he gets for his distance, his short game is excellent and he shows his putting skills with a teasing long putt down the hill that he judges absolutely perfectly.

A huge cheer goes out as he joins Justin Rose on eight under, and piles some early pressure on his playing partner.

  8. Here comes the Hovpublished at 19:52 British Summer Time 12 April

    Hovland -6 (3)

Oooh, there's a new member of the Six Under gang.

Viktor Hovland has muscled in alongside Scottie Scheffler, Corey Conners and Shane Lowry after back-to-back birdies on two and three.

Hovland has the talent to be one of the very best, we know that, but has been plagued by self-doubt in recent times.

Constant swing tweaks have not helped him find clarity in his game, but switching to a new driver coming into Augusta - which could have backfired - seems to have paid off.

  9. Postpublished at 19:51 British Summer Time 12 April

    Scheffler -6, Hatton -4 (3)

Scottie Scheffler's immediately up and out of his birdie putt at the third as he knows he's not hit it hard enough.

It stays up so he follows along and tucks in a par.

    Same result for Tyrrell Hatton.

  10. Lowry birdiepublished at 19:50 British Summer Time 12 April

    McCarty -5 Lowry -6 (2)

Shane Lowry does manage to see home that slippery putt down the slope on the second and he picks up an early birdie. Great start to the round.

Just a par for Matt McCarty.

  11. Postpublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 12 April

    Rose -8, DeChambeau -7

The fairway bunker on the first is huge - Justin Rose is bang in the middle of it and all you can see for what looks miles around is gleaming white sand.

Somehow he manages to spot his ball, hit it, and play a nice shot onto the green.

  12. Postpublished at 19:49 British Summer Time 12 April

Not sure my local driving range would be able to cope with that.

  13. Postpublished at 19:48 British Summer Time 12 April

    McIlroy -7, Conners -6 (1)

If there was a niggle in Rory McIlroy's fine round yesterday, it was that his driver was slightly awry.

After all, he found the bunkers off the tee on three of the four par fives.

Not an issue today, mind. He's bunged another perfect drive down two and it's caught the slope as well.

On it goes. Just another 370 yards.

  14. Postpublished at 19:47 British Summer Time 12 April

    McCarty -5 Lowry -5 (1)

Perfect approach from Shane Lowry to the second green aiming at the bunker in front of the right half and his distance is just right as it pulls up before the sand trap.

His chip is a bit aggressive though, which is unlike him, and he's left himself with work to do down the slope for birdie.

  15. Postpublished at 19:46 British Summer Time 12 April

    McIlroy -7, Conners -6 (1)

What do we make of Rory McIlroy's shoes by the way?

Not so much the orange soles, but the pink and white half and half swipe that's going on?

Also, I'm quite impressed I've managed to find a shoe picture that's not overwhelmingly branded.

    Very BBC of course.

  16. 'Sensational stuff from McIlroy'published at 19:46 British Summer Time 12 April

    McIlroy -7, Connors -6 (1)

    Trish Johnson
Eight-time member of the Team Europe Solheim Cup team on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Sensational stuff from McIlroy. He got a great read from his playing partner.

He knew exactly the line and when McIlroy knows the line, he’s pretty damn good at hitting it.

When he’s confident in the line, he’s putting superbly.

  17. Leaders tee offpublished at 19:44 British Summer Time 12 April

    Rose -8, DeChambeau -7

Justin Rose is leaning left after hitting his drive which means the ball's heading right, and it looks to have found the fairway bunker on the first.

Bryson DeChambeau gives his ball a thump and finds the fairway, just a three wood for Bryson off the first as he obviously fears he'll run out of fairway left with the driver.

He could take the Rory McIlroy line and just bomb it over the bunker but doesn't fancy it right now - that's not for everyone that shot.

  18. McIlroy opens with a birdiepublished at 19:43 British Summer Time 12 April

    McIlroy -7, Conners -6 (1)

All those putts on the range have paid off for Rory McIlroy as he calmly slots home from 10 feet for birdie at the first.

An ideal start - and looming large in Justin Rose's rearview mirror.

  19. Johnson cruises on route 66published at 19:42 British Summer Time 12 April

    Z Johnson -4 (18)

Who had a pound on Zach Johnson shooting the lowest round of the day? Could be a good investment.

The 2007 Masters champion has just signed for six-under 66!

Remarkably, that is the 49-year-old former US Ryder Cup captain's lowest ever round at Augusta National.

Age is just a number in this mad sport.

The leaders who are just starting now will see that score on the leaderboard and be licking their lips.

  20. Scheffler birdies the secondpublished at 19:39 British Summer Time 12 April

    Scheffler -6, Hatton -4 (2)

Back to the second green where Scottie Scheffler is taking his time over this three-footer.

In it goes. Early move for Scottie.

Tyrrell Hatton has a chance to erase his opening birdie but just slightly pulls his putt and stays at four under par.
