It has been 14 years since Rory McIlroy led the Masters after 54 holes.

Back then, he was also at -12 but with a four-shot lead and was cruising until it all fell apart.

Now he not only has the chance to lay that ghost to rest, but also end over a decade of waiting for a fifth major and also etch his name in golfing history in the most exclusive of clubs as a Grand Slam champion.

Standing in his way is the man who broke his heart at the US Open, Bryson DeChambeau, and however it plays out tomorrow it is sure to be a thrilling Masters Sunday.

  5. 'It's a fine dance' - McIlroy on course demeanourpublished at 00:39 British Summer Time 13 April

More from Rory McIlroy as he spoke to the media after his round:

"I think I am a sort of momentum player. There is a balance, though. You know, you have to try to ride that momentum as much as you can but then also temper it with a little bit of rationale and logic.

"It's a fine dance. I certainly don't want to be a robot out there, but at the same time I don't want to be too animated, either."

On what he will do to relax this evening: "I'll have some dinner. Maybe try to make it through the second episode of the third season of "Bridgerton." Fell asleep during episode 1 last night. And that's it.

"Put the phone away. Don't look at it. Try not to look at it until tomorrow night."

On how to cope with the pressure:"I've got a lot of experience. I came in here talking about being the most complete version of myself as a golfer, and you know, I just have to keep reminding myself of that and remind myself that no matter what situation or scenario I find myself in tomorrow, I'll be able to handle it"

  6. McIlroy the seasoned winnerpublished at 00:37 British Summer Time 13 April

So much focus on the US Open last year, but look beyond that to see how Rory McIlroy is a far more seasoned winner than Bryson DeChambeau.

Even this year already, he has two huge events to his name - winning at Pebble Beach and closing at The Players have to stand him in good stead.

DeChambeau is a showman, who enjoys the big stage, but his record on LIV is patchy. He's not won a tournament since 2023.

McIlroy just needs to do what Scottie Scheffler does and "stay in his lane".

Bryson Dechambeau talking to Sky Sports on how much pressure he felt out on the course today:

“Every hole matters, the most important thing is looking forward to the next shot and thinking ‘how can I give myself the best chance?’"

"I wasn’t striking my irons well today so I’ve got to work on that and if I can get that locked in for tomorrow it’s going to be a fun match.”

On his plan to take on Rory McIlroy:

“Just one shot at a time – get into every shot and execute to the best of your ability. That’s all you can focus on."

  8. Heavyweight showdown on Masters Sundaypublished at 00:32 British Summer Time 13 April

They say styles make fights, and even in golf who you are playing with can make a big difference. Sunday's heavyweight showdown is as mouthwatering as any big fight we've seen in the ring, but who holds the edge?

They're both fan favourites but have hugely different styles this week, with Rory McIlroy holding his emotions in check and playing with a calm patience while Bryson DeChambeau has been thrashing at almost every shot and high fiving every single person he can get to around Augusta National.

DeChambeau wants to make it a war, to trade huge haymakers off the tee and go toe-to-toe, while McIlroy wants to use his jab, his precision and stick and move throughout the entire 18 holes.

At the end there'll only be one man left standing, but who will it be?

Matthew: If Rory doesn't win it this year, he never will...

Andrew: Rory and Bryson in the final pairing on Masters Sunday tomorrow. Like a Ryder Cup opening singles matchup. As if that wasn’t box office enough, factor in the drama and heartbreak of last year’s US Open at Pinehurst... Rory will start two up.

Dennis: The Augusta faithful erupted after that sensational birdie by Bryson DeChambeau at 18th.

  10. 'I am not going to shy away from it' - McIlroypublished at 00:27 British Summer Time 13 April

    McIlroy -12 (66)

Rory McIlroy spoke to Sky Sports after signing for a six-under 66 to take a two-shot lead into the final round of the Masters:

"It was a dream start. You want to be one or two under through three and I was four under. I had a little bit of a wobble around the middle of the round, but I felt like I steadied myself just to get through 11 and 12 on even par was important.

"Then all I was trying to do was take advantage of the par fives and the shot of the day for me on 15 with the six iron and being able to convert that.

    Rory McIlroyImage source, Getty Images

On what bits of his game give him confidence:

"I think my iron play and my approach play was really solid today. I drove the ball well, hit a couple of squirly three woods.

"If I can keep the ball striking as it was, I felt like I left myself above the hole a lot so I couldn’t be aggressive with the putting."

    On the resilience he needs:

"I think I am not going to shy away from it. Situations like tomorrow are the reason I get up and practice and try and do all the right things.

"If I didn’t want this moment, I wouldn’t be doing those things. These are the pairings I want to be in and I’m excited for that."

  11. 'Very disappointed - but that's the game'published at 00:25 British Summer Time 13 April

    Lowry -5 (72)

A disappointed Shane Lowry gave his verdict on a level par round of 72 where he bogeyed the final two holes:

"I felt like I did a good job. It's just a very unfortunate finish. I'm very disappointed. But that's this game.

"If I play the way I can play, I'll be there or thereabouts tomorrow."

On having to speak to the media straight after his round: "I think I need a half an hour now to sit there and gather my thoughts. I can't be coming to talk to you guys straightaway. It shouldn't be happening. I don't agree with it.

"Tennis players have to talk to the media, but they have a half an hour or hour before they have to do it. I feel like we should have the same thing.

"That's how I feel. I'm probably going to say something stupid. I probably already have said something stupid. I'm just going to leave, OK?"

This wasn't in the script but what a remarkable putt from Bryson DeChambeau at the 18th.

The patrons had given Rory McIlroy such an ovation but the noise levels inched higher when Bryson drained.

There will be some energy around this group tomorrow.

Last time we saw Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy going head to head, it was the American who came roaring through at the US Open when McIlroy missed two short putts.

But... that's not the last time these two met.

Think of it what you will, but back in December, McIlroy teamed up with Scottie Scheffler in Las Vegas for matchplay against DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka in the inaugural The Showdown.

    And the winners?

Scheffler and McIlroy inside 14 holes.

    He'd take that tomorrow.

When he shed a four-shot lead at this very tournament back in 2011.

Just a reminder of what is on the line for Rory McIlroy.

The chance to join an exclusive club of golf's Grand Slam winners.

Jack Nicklaus, Gene Sarazen, Gary Player, Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods have won all four majors.

If McIlroy sees this through on Sunday, that list goes to six.

For the neutral, a blockbuster final pairing of Rory McIlroy and Bryson DeChambeau is going to make some viewing.

But will the energy and relentlessness of Bryson help or hinder Rory?

Thumbs for if it's a good thing or a bad thing.

I cannot believe that. That is one of the best putts you will ever see. It has gone in at perfect pace, bang in the middle and it never looked like it was missing.

Talk about getting yourself right back into it. Two shots is neither here nor there.

Wow! Bryson DeChambeau makes an all world putt on the last green for birdie to make sure Rory McIlroy will only have a two-shot lead in tomorrow's final round.

His escape from the fairway trap is a good one, pin high just off the left edge of the green but he can putt it from there, and my word can he putt it as it tracks all the way across the vast green and rattles into the cup.

What a statement ahead of tomorrow's showdown!

Justin Rose finishes with another bogey on a really disappointing day for the Englishman.
