There weren't many dry eyes on the 18th green yesterday when a bona fide Masters legend waved goodbye.

Two-time champion Bernhard Langer, making his 41st and final appearance at Augusta National, fell agonisingly short of the cut after missing a par putt on the last.

The 67-year-old German, who won in 1985 and 1993, grimaced as his ball slipped past the hole and meant he did not do enough to make the weekend.

Langer, who has decided to stop playing because he thinks the course is "too long" for him now, received an emotional standing ovation when he walked off for the final time.

Augusta chairman Fred Ridley met him with a warm hug before Langer embraced his waiting family.

"I fell in love with the course immediately when I played my first round here, and was fortunate to win twice, and come back here for many, many years. It's very special."

Auf wiedersehen, Bernhard. You'll be missed!

  2. Golf is hard - ask Nick Dunlap!published at 18:55 British Summer Time 12 April

    The Masters

Among the Masters stories not involving the leaders, Nick Dunlap's was quite something - as he shot 90 in the first round but then managed to gather himself to return with a 71 yesterday.

It wasn't easy though, and his trainer had to go out and by a load of golf balls for him to hit into the woods at his accommodation to try and flush out all that negativity from such a dreadful first round.

Fair play for getting through it though.

'That's something else!' - Scheffler chips in after finding bushes

Scottie Scheffler did not have his best stuff on Friday, making an uncharacteristic four bogeys on the way home.

This was a reminder of his skills though - chipping in after botching his tee shot into the bushes behind the iconic 12th hole.

Scheffler could become only the fourth man in history to successfully defend at the Masters.

And somehow it would not be a surprise.

We're getting ready for the main characters to emerge onto the first tee but the opening pair on day three have just reached the clubhouse.

    And in some style too.

The grin on Tom Kim's face is as wide as Rae's Creek after holing out from the front of the 18th green.

That late birdie ensures he is level par for his round.

A breakdown of Rory McIlroy's stats over the first two days shows he improved in almost every metric on Friday.

Interestingly, it was actually off the tee where he slipped back - and that's usually where he excels.

Get his driving game back in gear today and there could be fireworks.

Masters 2025: Rory McIlroy speaks to BBC Sport NI after his second round at the Masters

Rory McIlroy praised a display of "discipline and patience" as he stormed back into contention on Friday.

A quiet first nine was turbocharged around the turn and the world number two said he "rode my luck" at times as he shot three straight threes from holes 10 to 13.

After rushing home on Thursday to see his daughter Poppy before her bedtime, McIlroy put to bed the difficulties of two card-spoiling double bogeys and came back firing.

Six rounds of 66 or better at the Masters for Rory McIlroy.

Only Tiger Woods (eight), Jack Nicklaus (six) and Jordan Spieth (six) have more on their resume.

And they've got twelve Green Jackets between them.

He's only managed such a round once on a Friday before and that was after shooting 75 on the Thursday in 2020.

Can he put another one together today to lay down the gauntlet?

McIlroy stuns Augusta with superb eagle on 13th

Some had written Rory McIlroy off after two double bogeys in his final four holes on Thursday.

He put the doubters in their place yesterday.

This was one of many marvellous shots down the second nine on Friday as he shot the round of day, a 66, to move from level par to -6, just two back.

    Vintage McIlroy.

Fairly clear where Justin Rose's challenge has been built this week.

He's been the best putter out there in terms of strokes gained, built largely on his stellar display on Thursday.

He was still good on Friday, but was ranked eighth.

Reading the Augusta greens is notoriously tricky. It feels like he will need to excel in this metric to keep his nose in front.

Wily veteran Justin Rose continued to set the pace on day two, but his one-under 71 did allow the field to close the gap.

He's led after 10 rounds at the Masters in his 20 starts, twice as many as anyone else who has yet to win here.

Paired with Bryson DeChambeau, he'll feel some serious heat from the pack today.

    Friday was an absolute cracker.

Justin Rose clung onto the lead.

Rory McIlroy spectacularly revived his challenge.

Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler kept lurking menacingly.

And there is a whole host of the world's best jostling behind them.

Who will emerge from the shadows today?
