    Burns -4, Spaun -3 (15)

Ohh, Sam Burns - take a bow.

A very tricky bunker shot is negotiated superbly well by the American, leaving a short par putt to stay at four under for the championship.

JJ Spaun gives himself a birdie try from 20 feet with another fine approach, but those just haven't been dropping for him today.

Still, it's another safe par and he's keeping the pressure on his playing partner.

  2. Closing bogey for Koepkapublished at 00:08 British Summer Time 15 June

    Koepka +5 (73)

Isn't that fitting for the frustrating round of Brooks Koepka.

Just as he finally gets himself a birdie, he gifts it straight back with a wayward putt at the 18th.

I'm not convinced I'll be handed him to cover tomorrow and, at five back, he's almost certainly too far away to contend.

  3. Great save!published at 00:03 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hovland -1, Scott -2 (15)

Viktor Hovland US OpenImage source, Getty Images

Pretty gutsy stuff from Viktor Hovland as he has to just chip out from the fairway bunker on 15 to still leave him with 182 yards to get up and down from to save his par.

But that's exactly what he does as he lands an approach just on the fringe, pin high but 25 feet away and from there manages to find the bottom of the cup with his putt.

That's what some people call 'clutch' from the Norwegian.

  4. 'Proud of how I dealt with it'published at 00:02 British Summer Time 15 June

    Hatton +1 (68)

England's Tyrrell Hatton has been speaking to Sky Sports after his excellent two-under 68:

"Very happy with that round of golf. For the most part, I am proud of how I dealt with everything.

"[The double bogey at] fifteen was unfortunate. I don't understand why we need so much rough in the faces of bunkers - it's not like it's an easy shot anyway! But it is what it is and is the same for everyone.

"Overall, it has been a great day. We certainly would have taken 68 before going out."

On his chances in the final round: "If I can hit it like I did today, that would go a long way to helping me keep as calm as I can be. Ultimately, I'm happy with how I'm swinging it.

"Hopefully, we'll still be in with a chance, can put another good round together and see where we finish up."

  5. Sand savepublished at 23:59 British Summer Time 14 June

    Hovland -1, Scott -2 (14)

Probably too much of a sterotype to say that being Australian and spending so much time on the beach helps Adam Scott in the bunkers...

BUT, he's been magnificent from the sand traps today and almost always threatened to hole out from these pretty deep bunkers Oakmont has protecting the greens.

It's another wonder shot on 15 that leaves him just a tap-in for par.

  6. Back-to-back bogeyspublished at 23:54 British Summer Time 14 June

    Perez +4, B Griffin +2 (15)

Every time Ben Griffin gets himself within sight of the leaders, he seems to leak a couple of shots back to the golf course.

A three-putt on the 14th is followed by a visit to the greenside bunker on the next - two dropped strokes.

  7. Koepka finds a birdiepublished at 23:53 British Summer Time 14 June

    Koepka +4 (17)

Sound the klaxon! Brooks Koepka has a birdie on his card!

He's cashed in on the easiest hole on the course, the 17th, and finally we have something to talk about.

Back to four over par for the two-time US Open champion.

  8. Postpublished at 23:50 British Summer Time 14 June

    Burns -4, Spaun -3 (14)

New outright leader Sam Burns finds the bunker off the 14th tee and can only splash out a few yards forward.

But the third shot is a peach, within eight feet of the hole, and the par putt drops.

JJ Spaun's birdie putt from 15 feet or so drifts right and it's yet another par for him.

  9. Great Scott!published at 23:43 British Summer Time 14 June

    Hovland -1, Scott -2 (14)

Well, well, well - usually it's the commentators curse but mentioning Adam Scott's landmark had the opposite effect as he produces a stunner on 14.

A stinging wedge from 95 yards drops in over the flag and spins back, almost dropping in the cup but just trickling alongside.

He taps it in and strides off the green sitting on two under and just a couple off the lead.

  10. Birdie for Burnspublished at 23:39 British Summer Time 14 June

    Burns -4, Spaun -3 (13)

JJ Spaun leaves his birdie putt a couple of feet short, but he rattles in a ninth straight par.

Sam Burns got a whole lot closer with his tee shot to the par three - and he makes the putt!

Burns into the lead on his own for the first time in a while.

  11. Hatton in the mixpublished at 23:34 British Summer Time 14 June

    Hatton +1 (68)

That's a great way for Tyrrell Hatton to finish - a par at the last following a wonderful approach with his third shot, having found trouble off the tee.

He's had plenty of top-10s in majors, but maybe this is the week he finally bags one of golf's biggest prizes.

  12. Postpublished at 23:31 British Summer Time 14 June

    Burns -3, Spaun -3 (12)

A few alarms off the tee for both Sam Burns and JJ Spaun, with both missing the fairway and conceding their chance to go for the green in two, but the par-five 12th is the place to do that if you're going to do it.

Both players recover sufficiently enough to drain short-range par putts and maintain their gap to the rest of the field.

  13. Birdie for Scottpublished at 23:29 British Summer Time 14 June

    Hovland -1, Scott -1 (13)

Adam Scott is feeling this now after rolling in a birdie on 13 following an awesome tee shot on the par three from 177.

Scott's been playing pretty well all day and is now starting to get his rewards with his second birdie of the day - he's only had one bogey today and that was on his opening hole.

  14. Pars on 12published at 23:23 British Summer Time 14 June

    Hovland -1, Scott E (12)

Adam Scott finds the rough off the tee so has to lay up before opting to putt out of the fringe around the green with his fourth to the par five.

Scott plays with a long broomhandle putter and I've never liked them for either the longer lag putts or playing through the fringe grass, as Scott shows when his putt pulls up way short.

Viktor Hovland makes his par when playing it as a genuine three-shotter, with 25 feet left after his approach safely navigated in two for his five.

  15. Postpublished at 23:22 British Summer Time 14 June

    Perez +4, B Griffin E (13)

Another fine putt from the 15-20 feet range earns Ben Griffin another birdie.

Back to even par and a share of fourth place.

  16. Hatton birdies 17published at 23:21 British Summer Time 14 June

    Hatton +1 (17)

    Tyrrell HattonImage source, Getty Images

An excellent tee shot gives Tyrrell Hatton an outside chance of an eagle on the par-four 17th.

In the end he makes a birdie three and the Englishman is back to one over par, four off the lead.

  17. Postpublished at 23:13 British Summer Time 14 June

    Burns -3, Spaun -3 (11)

JJ Spaun's par putt from five feet wipes its feet on the way in, but it drops in for the American to stay at three under par.

I don't recall him missing too many from that range this week.

The players below this pair on the leaderboard will hope one or both show signs of frailty in the closing holes, but at the moment neither is showing any weakness.

  18. Ortiz sets clubhouse targetpublished at 23:11 British Summer Time 14 June

    Ortiz E (67), Neergaard-Petersen +2 (69)

Carlos Ortiz bogeys the last hole but he is the clubhouse leader at level par after a three-under-par round of 67 today.

That's the lowest round of the day.

He's been in a good pairing today - playing partner Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen of Denmark went round in 69 to end two over.

  19. Postpublished at 23:04 British Summer Time 14 June

    Koepka +5, SW Kim +6 (14)

I've given Brooks Koepka 14 holes and nothing has happened.

    He's just made another par.

I'm having the final four holes off.

    (Unless something interesting happens...)

  20. Postpublished at 23:03 British Summer Time 14 June

    Burns -3, Spaun -3 (10)

JJ Spaun and Sam Burns have both hit eight of 10 greens in regulation in this third round so far.

Very solid stuff from our two leaders, who continue along their respective merry ways with a two-shot lead over their closest challengers.
