Graphic of Thomas Detry's round two - six pars, five birdies, four double bogeys, two bogeys and one eagle

It was certainly entertaining watching Belgium's Thomas Detry on Friday.

His helter-skelter round included briefly joining the leaders at three under before toppling away.

He has one win on his clipboard this season, a seven-shot demolition at Phoenix in February.

I could have lucked out by being given him to follow this evening...

As for Rory McIlroy's round today, there has been no club throwing but his score continues to trend in the wrong direction.

One birdie and four bogeys has him at +9 and way out of contention.

Two holes left for the Masters champ.

Want to see angry Rory McIlroy? Of course you do!

Here's McIlroy yesterday two thirds of the way through his round, sending his club flying as frustration grew.

He later smashed his club on the ground at the 17th tee and destroyed a marker as well...

  6. Look at all the green!published at 19:29 British Summer Time 14 June

More holes playing under par so far today

As the leaders prepare to go out, it must be a welcome sight to see a splash of holes actually playing under par today.

Maybe it's because the weaker players have all gone home, or more likely because the greens have taken on some water and are a touch more receptive in the slightly softer conditions, but there are birdie opportunities around Oakmont.

Especially at 17 - and they'd better take it because the brutish 18th is playing way over par. Again.

  7. Another new major champion?published at 19:27 British Summer Time 14 June

The US Open is the best of the four majors for first-time winners recently, with 17 players winning their very first major in this event this century.

And that's certainly reflected in the leaderboard right now, with only two major champions currently in the top 11 - Brooks Koepka and Adam Scott.

Recent history's not with Koepka though, as Tiger Woods is the only man this century to win the US Open while already having more than one major already under his belt.

So that would rule out Scottie Scheffler, Jon Rahm and Collin Morikawa as the only other multiple major winners in the top 35 - so could we see another brand new major champion crowned on Sunday?

  8. It got harder on Friday...published at 19:21 British Summer Time 14 June

More bogeys, birdies and double bogeys were shot on day two

The graph above illustrates how Oakmont got harder on Friday.

That is a punishing number of double bogeys and shows how, if you make a mistake, things can rapidly unravel around here.

Perhaps surprisingly, more birdies were shot on day two than day one proving, as Sam Burns showed, it was possible to make a score.

  9. How McIlroy made the weekendpublished at 19:20 British Summer Time 14 June

Rory McIlroy said motivation has been a bit of a problem since he won the Masters and completed his career Grand Slam.

And although things aren't quite going his way at Oakmont he did show some determination just to get a tee time for the weekend.

    Toughest test in golf? Pfft...

Sam Burns make a mockery of Oakmont's brutal challenge with a brilliant round to take the US Open lead.

This is the eighth time Burns has held the 36-hole lead since he joined the PGA Tour (his first in a major) and his conversion rate is not good to say the least.

As Burns has only turned one of those previous seven leads into a tournament victory - this week would be some event to make it two.

There was a deluge of rain overnight but Oakmont has soaked most of it up and looks in decent shape - and there's even been a hint of spin taking grip on the greens, so there maybe could be a decent score out there today.

It still looks pretty tough though.

Welcome back golf fans to day three of the 125th US Open.

Moving day at the US Open on a course as difficult as Oakmont could usually see more players moving backwards than forwards, but with so much rain overnight the softer greens could just offer a bit more for the chasing pack.

As it's a wide open leaderboard with Sam Burns leading the way on three under but just six shots covering the top 26 players in the field - and with big numbers lurking everywhere no lead is ever safe at Oakmont.

So can Viktor Hovland (-1) continue his return to form or will two-time US Open champion Brooks Koepka come steaming out of the pack?

Could Scottie Scheffer even launch a bid from way back? Stay with us throughout the evening as there's sure to be more enthralling golf going on.
