An untidy and costly end to the front nine for Viktor Hovland.

He gets his chip from right of the green all wrong and sends it a mile past the pin.

A bogey on the par three drops the Norwegian to eight under.

Up to the fifth, where plenty have scored low.

Marco Penge sprays it way right, while Matt Fitzpatrick's rolls down the bank to the left. Jake Knapp does the same.

All three approach nicely though and have looks at birdie.

  4. Hovland well placedpublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 13 July

    Hovland -9, Sullivan -4 (8)

"If that goes down there, I'm gubbed."

England's Andy Sullivan hits a cracking approach to the eighth, but is well aware a couple more feet and he'd have rolled off the green and into a rotten spot.

He ends up annoyed as the birdie putt rolls past.

Can Viktor Hovland save par? The ball dribbles towards the hole and is gobbled up.

The Norwegian is four under for the day through eight and just two off the top.

  5. McIlroy back at the toppublished at 15:05 British Summer Time 13 July

    McIlroy -11, Gotterup -11, Clark, -9 (4)

Chris Gotterup and Wyndham Clark both tidy up for their respective pars at the fourth, but focus is all on Rory McIlroy as he addresses his birdie putt.

From eight feet, it breaks from right to left and drops to take him back into a share of the lead.

  6. Postpublished at 15:01 British Summer Time 13 July

    McIlroy -10, Gotterup -11, Clark -9 (3)

There will be twists and turns aplenty in the next few hours, you can count on that.

Rory McIlroy has a very makeable birdie putt to come at the fourth, with Wyndham Clark and Chris Gotterup both off the green after two shots.

  7. Penge joins Gotterup at the toppublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 13 July

    Penge -11 (4)

    Andrew Petrie

Back-to-back birdies for Marco Penge and he's up there with Chris Gotterup!

It was a brilliant approach shot to put himself within five feet and he duly obliged with the putter.

I witnessed Penge walk from hole-to-hole on Friday with very little fanfare. Not the case today.

  8. Straka climbs as Aberg fallspublished at 14:53 British Summer Time 13 July

    Straka -10 (5), Aberg - 8 (6)

The fifth is the easiest hole on the course statistically and Sepp Straka uses that to his advantage.

He's off to the right of the green with his first shot, but it's a great up and down and he knocks in his birdie from five feet.

Ludvig Aberg has a long look at birdie at the sixth to join those tied for second. Ach, it's three foot past for par. But he misses! He loses a shot immediately from the eagle at the fifth.

  9. Change at the toppublished at 14:51 British Summer Time 13 July

    McIlroy -10, Gotterup -11, Clark -9 (3)

Chris Gotterup has a big grin on his face after his makes his birdie putt to return to 11 under.

Rory McIlroy can't follow him in for his par, it dives to the right and that wayward second shot proves costly.

Wyndham Clark tapped in for his birdie.

  10. Postpublished at 14:46 British Summer Time 13 July

    McIlroy -11, Gotterup -10, Clark -8 (2)

Wyndham Clark plays a delightful pitch shot with his third shot and leaves a straightforward birdie putt that he duly knocks in.

Chris Gotterup's third has plenty of pace and thuds into the flagstick, leaving another birdie look.

All eyes on McIlroy, whose fourth shot skips up the bank but finishes well short of the hole.

    Big putt to come...

  11. Postpublished at 14:41 British Summer Time 13 July

Rory McIlroy has pulled his second shot at the par-five third way left.

His ball is sat down in some longer grass and he'll have his work cut out from there.

He hacks it out, but it rolls off the back of the green. McIlroy needs an up-and-down to save par.

  12. Penultimate group all one awaypublished at 14:38 British Summer Time 13 July

    Knapp -10, M Fitzpatrick -10, Penge -10 (3)

    Absolute class from Marco Penge.

He made an error with the drive and had to play out of the bunker, but what a response. He rolls in the five foot putt for birdie. The young man is showing real composure.

Matt Fitzpatrick can't seal the eagle, but it's close enough for a birdie.

The penultimate group are all within a shot of the lead.

The eagles are flowing at five!

Ludvig Aberg is pin high and drains it to roars of delight from the crowd.

He owes a debt of gratitude to Ryder Cup pal Nicolai Hojgaard who gave the Swede a good read of the line.

Par or above on this 338-yard hole must feel like a travesty today.

  14. Eagle opportunity for Fitzpatrickpublished at 14:30 British Summer Time 13 July

    Penge -9, M Fitzpatrick -9 (2)

Matt Fitzpatrick has a look at an eagle on the par-five third. His teebox drive is perfectly placed, and his approach rolls within 23 feet of the hole.

It looks good but rolls down to the bottom shelf.

Marco Penge then steps ups and goes one better, it's within five feet! That looks really good.

It's not an eagle shout though. He put his first in the bunker. Still, a good look at birdie.

  15. Scottie soars with eaglepublished at 14:25 British Summer Time 13 July

    Scheffler -8 (5)

    Martin Watt
BBC Sport Scotland at the Renaissance Club

    Ooft! Eagle for Scottie Scheffler.

A mighty scud from tee to back of green is followed by a super 20-footer over the mound and into the bottom of the cup.

The world number one moves to three off the lead.

Viktor Hovland is on the charge after three birdies in his first five holes.

He's given himself a look at another on the par-three stadium hole at six.

He's within three feet and rolls it in confidently. The Norwegian is T4 at nine under.

    McIlroy -11, Gotterup -10, Clark -8 (2)

Chris Gotterup's birdie putt looks good for a long way, but dives left at the hole and he settles for par.

Wyndham Clark two putts for his bogey having escaped the sand.

Rory McIlroy is last to putt and his birdie putt scrapes past on the low side. He stays at 11 under.

  19. In your head, in your head...published at 14:16 British Summer Time 13 July

    Richard Winton
BBC Scotland at The Renaissance Club

Rory McIlroy and Chris Gotterup are having a wee natter as they stroll on to the second green.

The psychology of this is fascinating. How does the young American deal with being in this environment?

And he plays a delightful wedge shot that lands pin-high and halts on a sixpence - can the Northern Irishman extend his lead?

Chris Gotterup has an outside birdie chance, while Wyndham Clark is in a spot of bother in the greenside bunker.
