An old boy on a buggy has just barely flinched as an errant shot from the seventh tee clattered off his cart.

Meanwhile, all around him, people just off the eighth fairway - including Matti Schmid - were diving for cover as the German player yelped ‘fore!’

Turns out it was leader Chris Gotterup’s rogue clatter…

Oh so nearly an ace for Chris Gotterup at the sixth!

His tee shot lands short of the hole and looks in for all money, but lips out to a couple of feet.

He taps it in to go two clear at the top.

But the birdie attempt refuses to disappear below ground. As you were.

Rory McIlroy has been quiet by his own very high standards over the past few holes, but he drains a six foot birdie putt at the eighth and has another decent look at the ninth...

It's a confident roll, end over end, but it just misses on the low side.

Wyndham Clark has a chance for yet another birdie on 15 and the outright lead...

It's a devious downhiller and doesn't miss by much.

Scottie Scheffler holes a testing six-footer after splashing out of the sand trap front right.

Big-hitting Englishman Marco Penge is about far more than his driver and he shows it at the par-three sixth.

A gorgeous tee shot rolls out to three feet and he joins the leaders at 10 under.

Harry Hall and Chris Gotterup both knock in birdie putts at the fifth, which is playing way under par today.

Hall joins the pack at 10 under while Gotterup moves one clear at the top.

At the par-three ninth, American Jake Knapp has just rolled in a 26 footer to get to nine under.

It's all happening!

Ludvig Aberg leaked one left on seven and is now pondering what to do. The Swede is traipsing up and down among the fans while chewing over the options with his bagman.

The prevarication pays off, though, as he hits an outrageous approach. Birdie chance…

A brolly can be a familiar sight in Scottish summer. Usually it's to keep out the rain rather than the blazing sunshine though.

Harry Hall gets back to nine under with a confident putt at the fourth hole, but Chris Gotterup isn't able to convert and only makes par.

Having found a fairway bunker off the tee at seven, Rory McIlroy does well to give himself a chance at par from 13ft.

However, it drifts by the right of the hole and the Northern Irishman drops back to seven under.

Sepp Straka tidies up to save par.

But Aberg is now also sharing that lead with Wyndham Clark, who posts a seventh birdie of the day. Quite the effort.

Chris Gotterup, a few holes back, is likely wondering what's happened to his overnight advantage...

The Swede's lengthy eagle putt is superb for line and not bad for pace either.

A tap-in birdie takes him to 10 under and a share of first place.

From where they both were, two excellent pars for Chris Gotterup and Harry Hall at the third.

Two pars for Rory McIlroy at five and six, while his playing partner Sepp Straka joins him at eight under with a lovely chip and putt for birdie at the fifth.

It's all bunching up very nicely.

More issues for Harry Hall at the third as his drive heads way left.

Chris Gotterup is also in bother. His second shot finds a bunker - he hacks out sideways and needs to get up-and-down for par.

The chasing pack are gathering steam.

England's Marco Penge birdies the third and is joined in a four-way share of second by Kevin Yu, who has gained three shots in his opening seven holes.

Ludvig Aberg moves one off the lead with his first birdie of the day.

The Swede makes light work of the par-five third and polishes off a simple putt.

That's a first bogey in 35 holes for Chris Gotterup as his lengthy par put trickles past. A tee shot into the sand has cost him there and he now only leads by one.
