A long conversation between Rory McIlroy and his caddie Harry Diamond at the gettable fifth hole.

It’s three wood they decide upon and the Northern Irishman sends it bounding up the middle.

It is noticeable how much bigger the crowd is for this pair than any other on the course.

No question about the biggest draw this week.

    McIlroy -8 Straka -7 (4)

The pin at four is tucked away on the right side of the green and Rory McIlroy and Sepp Straka both land in the fringe with their approach shots.

The Ryder Cup colleagues both take putter from off the green and both come up short.

Take your par and move on.

    Gotterup -11 Hall -8 (1)

Chris Gotterup starts with a solid par after his birdie attempt from 28 feet brushed the hole. That should settle any early nerves.

Harry Hall's par putt slips past, though.

    Clark (-9) Scheffler (-4) 10

Still Scottie Scheffler searches for his first birdie of the day after another putt lips out on 10. The big fella is not a happy camper out there.

Better news for his player partner Wyndham Clark, though. He's the man on the move and posts his fifth birdie of the day to move within two of the lead. Nae bad after bogey on the first...

There’s a large crowd snaking up the fourth fairway from the third green, where a certain Northern Irishman has just made his first birdie of the day.

    Gotterup -11 Hall -9

That's your leader on the course... World 158 Chris Gotterup has watched some big names tee off but none have done anything so far to frighten him.

The 25-year-old American is only on his second season on the PGA Tour, though, and has not been in this position all that often. How will he handle it?

Rory McIlroy's eagle putt doesn't quite make it but the Northern Irishman tidies up for his first birdie of the day.

    Scheffler -4, Clark -8 (9)

Zero front-nine birdies for Scottie Scheffler - who saw that coming?

Wyndham Clark likes the look of his attempt at a two but it veers just off line.

Still, he's right in the mix after responding impressively to a bogey start by posting a three-under 32 for his opening nine holes.

    Aberg -8 (1)

Ludvig Aberg might be the man to watch here. Three back and he starts with a par... but only after rolling in a testing 10-footer.

    McIlroy -7 Straka -6 (2)

Rory McIlroy makes his regulation par on two - nice and easy - but Sepp Straka drops one.

    Reitan -8 (10)

Norway's Kristoffer Reitan has joined the contingent of players at eight-under par with a birdie at the 10th hole.

The 27-year-old is fifth in the Race to Dubai rankings and has impressed this afternoon, making four birdies and an eagle, alongside two bogeys.

    Scheffler -4 Clark -8 (8)

Wyndham Clark is the man in form in this pairing.

He almost holes his approach to the eighth green and purposefully knocks in the birdie to go eight under.

Scottie Scheffler's wedge doesn't even reach the green. He opts to putt rather than chip the next shot and mops up for par.

    McIlroy -7, Straka -7 (1)

Two comfortable two-putt pars for Rory McIlroy and Sepp Straka at the first.

McIlroy then launches his drive 359 yards down the second fairway.

    Mitchell -7, Taylor -7

Trouble off the first tee for Keith Mitchell and Nick Taylor.

Mitchell is in a nasty little fairway bunker down the right, with Canadian Taylor miles right amid a little cluster of trees.

    McIlroy -7

Rory McIlroy - as he did in rounds one and two - smashes driver off the first tee.

However, it's down the left side and he needs to go over an enormous tree to access the green.

He does so with aplomb and leaves himself a decent look at birdie.

Remember that haar that rolled in earlier?

It has firmly burned away now and we have another scorching day with clear blue skies. Still a bit of wind though to keep those superstars on their toes.

Sam Bairstow is having a tough old day.

The Englishman reaches the turn in 40 after a bogey on two then doubles on four and seven. Ouch.

He is five over for the day and has plummeted down to one over for the tournament.

    Hovland -5, Rose -2 (14)

A pair of pars at the 14th for Viktor Hovland and Justin Rose.

Rose is going through a topsy-turvy round, but Viktor Hovland is looking composed and determined.

Still six shots off the lead - with the leader still to go out - but he is one to watch for sure.
