  1. Hovland birdies and Rose fumespublished at 13:42 British Summer Time 12 July

    Hovland -5, Rose -2 (9)

Justin Rose does splash it out of the bunker, but he's clearly not happy as it barely spins onto the green.

He thumps his wedge off his back as he hops out of the bunker, not a side we usually see from him.

His par putt then fades to the right-hand side. That's three bogies in a row after a fine start.

Viktor Hovland slides in his three-footer for birdie.

    Fleetwood -3, English -3 (5)

At a meagre 338 yards, the fifth is the shortest par four on the course.

It's also downwind today and currently playing as the easiest hole.

Tommy Fleetwood gets back to level for the day with a birdie but Harris English can't convert an eight-footer and racks up a fifth par in a row.

There are a lot of people here not dressed for this wee deviation in the weather.

The wise ones are grabbing jackets and jerseys, while the others are huddling together and looking ruefully at the skies.

  4. Rose drops another shot; Hovland close to acepublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 12 July

    Hovland -4, Rose -3 (8)

Justin Rose dropped another shot on the seventh, falling one behind his playing partner.

He's now found a bunker on the side of the green at the par-three ninth. It's rolled into the middle, though, so he can take a firm stance to splash it out.

Viktor Hovland almost had to buy everyone a drink with a sensational approach that threatened to roll out and into the cup.

It trickled to the right, but he has an attractive birdie putt to come.

    A tremendous tee shot.

  5. Conditions they are a-changinpublished at 13:37 British Summer Time 12 July

    Haar at the Renaissance Club

More that a few punters are fixing their eyes on the haar rolling in from the Firth of Forth and murmuring to each other. And I’m sure I just felt a drop or two of moisture in the air

There’s a bit of a breeze blowing today, too - how might that impact on the scoring?

  6. Postpublished at 13:31 British Summer Time 12 July

We've spoken a lot in the past hour or so about the heat at the Renaissance Club today, but conditions are changing as haar sweeps across the course off the coastline.

If that hangs around and the wind picks up, scoring could become a wee bit trickier.

Haar, for the unaware, is a fog that sweeps in off the sea.

Contrasting fortunes on the third for this pair.

Marcel Siem takes advantage of the par five to post his first birdie of the day.

But Bud Cauley finds trees off the tee then a greenside bunker and drops the shot he gained on the first. A sore one for the American.

  9. What's the hardest hole on the course?published at 13:22 British Summer Time 12 July

The par-four seventh is playing as the hardest hole this week.

The average scoring there has been 0.3 strokes over par, which may not seem like much, but when the scoring is so low at the top of the leaderboard, every shot matters.

The second and 18th are the other two most challenging, also both par fours.

If anyone makes a four on these holes, don't be surprised if you catch them running to the next tee.

The easiest three holes on the course so far have been the trio of par fives at the Renaissance Club.

The 10th, third, and 16th are all playing below par and chance to get a couple shots on the field.

Speaking of the testing par-four seventh, that has just undone Justin Rose and Viktor Hovland...

  11. Bogeys for Hovland & Rosepublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 12 July

    Hovland -4, Rose -4 (7)

Justin Rose gets it down there and greenside in two, but faces a testing gouge out from the right.

Two tricky par putts follow to keep the momentum going.

Viktor Hovland's up first, it takes an age to get there, but it lips out and he has to tap in for bogey.

A shorter putt for Rose, seven feet or so, and he studies it intently. It burns the left edge, and he also drops a shot.

Both players have shot the exact same on every hole so far, coincidentally.

    Hovland -5, Rose -5 (6)

Viktor Hovland found a bunker off the tee on the par-four seventh and had to pitch out sideways.

He's left with around 200 yards for his third and has an in-depth conversation with his caddie for a good three or four minutes.

Every yardage number possible is given, a club swap from four to five iron on the caddie's advice then follows, before Hovland backs off and resets his routine.

And quite right too. He sticks it to 12 feet.

Turns out walking up to your ball and just slinging it towards the green is for numpties like me.

    Tommy Fleetwood gets one back.

A monstrous approach gets him on the green of the par-five third in two and it's a tap-in birdie.

Harris English has to settle for a third straight par after tangling with heavy rough down the left.

    Detry +4, Couvra +1 (12)

Six over today now for Thomas Detry, a desperately tough morning. Martin Couvra not faring much better either at three over today.

It looks as if this group have swapped the sun-kissed Renaissance Club for a cold January afternoon in Scotland on the 12th green.

Belgian Detry pulled his jumper on and was putting in a stiff wind and grey-blue skies.

Welcome to Scotland. Four seasons in one day.

An exchange of pleasantries with Justin Thomas, a brief grin, and Bob MacIntyre strides off to the recorders' tent alone.

Not the title defence he would have wanted, and thoughts will now likely begin to stray to Portrush.

    MacIntyre +1 (72)

Defending champion Bob MacIntyre has parred 18 for a 72.

The home favourite hasn't had his best stuff this week and is now 12 shots back from leader Chris Gotterup.

  17. Hovland and Rose make a movepublished at 12:57 British Summer Time 12 July

    Hovland -5, Rose -5 (6)

Both Viktor Hovland and Justin Rose birdied the fifth to keep their solid starts going before walking into the arena-like par-three sixth.

It's a short hole, but hitting the green is imperative, and not as easy as it seems. The hole is cut in the back half of the green and off to the left.

Both tee shots find the camber on the left and filter down, around 11 feet from the cup.

Rapturous applause follows as they saunter towards the putting surface.

Two more birdies follow. They're making a move.

Yet more sand trouble for Tommy Fleetwood.

His drive on two goes wide right into wispy rough and from there he plonks it in the greenside bunker.

He does well to scoop it out from an awkward lie, but can't drain the 15-footer.

Bogey-bogey start for the Englishman, who is all hot and bothered and has now shed his cardigan.
