Do you know how you could tell it was windy yesterday? Aside from the post-round grumbling from those who shot big, obviously...

By watching the planes coming over the course and into Prestwick Airport, which is tucked behind the ninth green. Some of those big beasts were drifting pretty alarmingly before thudding to the ground with a dunt.

    Sound familiar..?

    Siem -1 (12)

I've just been called out for saying "Falling apart at the Siems".

Think it's fair as the best player so far today has overshot the 13th green and picked out some horrible-looking rough at the back.

Maybe I need to keep the puns in the bag.

    Lowry -5 (09:47 BST)

Here comes Shane Lowry, striding towards the first tee.

Looks fairly relaxed, dressed all in black apart from a bright white cap.

    A big day ahead.

  4. Instant response by Koepkapublished at 09:40 British Summer Time 19 July

    Koepka -1 (2)

That's the way to respond to a bogey on the opening hole - drill an approach within six feet of the flag on the second and knock it in for a birdie.

Brooks Koepka back to where he started the day.

Former US Open champion Wyndham Clark, who began seven over today, has also picked up a shot on the second hole.

    Cantlay +2, Schauffele -2, Woods +8 (1)

The putter is out for Tiger Woods as he takes aim from off the green. None of that touch is lost and it comes up adjacent to the hole. Nicely done.

Both Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele nudge their putts close too and it's a trio of pars to kick matters off.

    Morikawa +2

It was a steady opening round for 2021 champion Collin Morikawa yesterday; 15 pars, one birdie, one bogey and a costly double-bogey on the Postage Stamp - where he fell foul of one of those horrid bunkers around the eighth green.

The American is the latest player to commence his second round.

I've been trying to get you a picture of Darren Clarke since my 08:53 post and finally here he is.

    It's a statement outfit.

What do we reckon to the shade of pink - yay or nay?

    Hit the thumbs.

    Lowry -5, Fitzpatrick -1 (09:47 BST)

We're about 15 minutes away from seeing Shane Lowry on the course once more.

He was in sparkling form yesterday, particularly with the putter, and starts one shot off the lead.

Could he return to Royal Portrush, the scene of his 2019 Open win, next summer as the defending champion?

His Ryder Cup team-mate and playing partner Matt Fitzpatrick is one of the players on one under and will hope to make a move up the leaderboard this morning.

    Siem -1 (12)

Another terrific attempt from distance by Marcel Siem as he looks to bounce back from those bogeys.

He's inches away from converting an 18-footer for birdie at the 12th.

  10. Koepka bogeys the firstpublished at 09:29 British Summer Time 19 July

    Koepka E (1)

Not the start Brooks Koepka wanted.

He found a greenside bunker on the first, couldn't get up and down in two and he drops a shot at the first to slip back to even par for the tournament.

Still, a long way to go.

    Off we go then, lads.

Three tee shots all beefed down the fairway.

    Perfect.

No doubt Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele are utterly at ease in this marquee group being the best of mates.

After winning the US PGA Championship in May, Schauffele inched ahead as the first to take a major, although Cantlay came close a month later at the US Open.

I wouldn't discount either of them here either, albeit Schauffele was more impressive on day one to sit four shots off the lead.

  13. Koepka under waypublished at 09:18 British Summer Time 19 July

    Koepka -1

Five-time major winner Brooks Koepka is under way in his second round, firing an iron down the first fairway.

He carded four birdies in a row on the front nine yesterday and, in these slightly more benign conditions, he might fancy eating into his five-shot deficit this morning.

  14. Another bogey for Siempublished at 09:17 British Summer Time 19 July

    Siem -1 (11)

    Marcel SiemImage source, PA Media

Urgh that's a shame for Marcel Siem, our star of the early hours.

He left himself seven foot for par on the miserly 11th but hasn't been able to convert.

After such a hot start, he's on the slide.

    Day E (3)

Tidy start from Jason Day over the first hour of his round.

He's two under through three holes, in part thanks to a cracking 30 foot birdie putt at the second.

    Up to level par.

The way people dress to come to the golf is endlessly fascinating.

Some look poised to play, with slacks and spikes. Others are cutting around in jeans and expensive looking white trainers. Bold in these conditions.

There are the batallions swishing around in waterproofs, wielding brollies. And the ones who can't decide, so end up pairing shorts with anoraks and woolly bunnets.

Then there was this fella, who very much underclubbed on Thursday. Yes, those are suede loafers...

You said it Scriv, it's still Tiger.

He puts himself through the wringer to just do the majors and is it that surprising he is not jostling at the top of the board?

Always has the biggest following though.

  18. Big crowds formingpublished at 09:10 British Summer Time 19 July

    Harrington +1 (09:03); Woods +8 (09:25)

    Peter Scrivener
    BBC Sport at Royal Troon

There are hundreds of people gathering by the first tee. The stand that half surrounds it is full and hopeful punters are queuing to get in.

I suspect they're not all there to see two-time Champion Golfer of the Year Padraig Harrington get his second round under way. The Irishman had a decent first round and will be looking to follow Marcel Siem's lead this morning.

The hordes are more likely in town hoping to catch a glimpse of the Tiger. Woods is away at 09:25 and seasoned watchers will tell you you've got to be in place earlier than that to get a prime spot. Fans are strung out down the left of the first, patiently waiting.

He may have had a stinker of an opening but it's still Tiger.

Brooks Koepka has got himself a reputation as a major killer - but this season his radar has mostly been off: 45th at the Masters and then a tie for 26th at the US PGA and the US Open.

He's tied for 12th at the moment and, after bogeying two and three yesterday, he shot four birdies in a row to leap into contention.

This guy knows how to get it done and is always a frightening prospect on a leaderboard.
